Chapter 1
Yet I believe the moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Created by imperfections.

A quiet night was broken by the vibrating buzzes of a phone. Caspar groans and reluctantly opens one eye. At first everything is blurry and hazy. But as he blinks the room starts to clear. He reaches over to the nightstand and picks up the phone touching the screen. The bright light hurts his eyes as he quickly lowers the brightness. It takes a few moments for his eyes to adjust to seeing words.
'are you free right now'
It was his friend, November. "What could she be up to?" he mumbles as he sits up in his bed. He rubs his eyes before looking back at the phone. He started to respond to her.
'Yeah, what's up?'
'im at the park. wanna hang"
Caspar looks at the top corner of his phone, it was three in the morning. He sits there for a solid minute, debating with himself whether to go and lose sleep or to go back to sleep and face her in the morning. He sighs and responds,
'Yeah I'll be there in a few. Stay there.'
He gets up carefully not wanting to wake up with his mom. Especially right now. He puts on his mustard color sweater and puts on his blue jeans. He picks up his beat up white converses and open his window. He cautiously climbs out and down the house. He slips on his shoes and heads to his bike.
The night was cold, but refreshing. The moon's light made everything visible and yet look mysterious. The stars were visible that night, each twinkling bright. Caspar mounts his bike and pedals off toward the neighborhood park. The air brush against his face, his brown hair gently moves as he races to the park. No other life around at this time.
November was at the park swinging gently, her feet barely leaving the ground. She checks her phone and sees Caspar's message. She didn't mean to end up over here, but she didn't know where-else to go. She tugs on the sleeves of her grey and black varsity jacket. Her pale skin especially is almost radiating in the moonlight. Little noises alert her attention, she sits up quickly almost startled. She relaxes once she sees that it was just Caspar, giving a small smile.
"Hey you made it here alive," she said giggling a bit. "I didn't wake you did I?"
Caspar rolled his eyes, "Nah I was awake anyways. So why you here at the park? Is it home again?"
November shakes her head at first, but then reluctantly nods. "Sorry for bothering you I just didn't want to be alone."
Caspar sets his bike down on the ground and walks over to her. He ruffled her hair, he likes how soft the midnight strands were. "Hey I told you I was awake. You weren't bothering me."
November nods and smiles, "Want something to drink?", she asks as she reaches into a worn backpack.
Caspar nodded, "Yeah I do, I have a feeling that we're gonna be here awhile." he remarks and sits on the swing next to her.
She tosses him a strawberry fizz drink, "Sorry again. So what shall we do?"
He catches the drink and shrugs, "We could ride around on our bikes-"
"About that. . .I crashed my bike on the way here. . .", she says casually.
Caspar jump straight up and lands on his feet. He drops the drink and moves to November holding her shoulders, "What?! Are you okay?! What happened?!"
November looks up at him a bit. "Oh I um got angry on the way here and sort of just rammed into a tree. I hurt my elbow and knee but I'm fine now."
Caspar sighs and gently grabs her arm looking at the bloodstain on the jacket. "You can't keep wrecking things when you're angry. . .you're gonna keep hurting yourself."
He looks at her, sometimes he wonders what goes on in her head. He never understood why she would hurt herself when she was mad. She never tells him her reasoning, but he hopes that maybe one day she'll stop or at least not hurt herself so often. Just last week she had a bloody nose and hurt her wrist. Caspar wants to help her but sometimes he doesn't know how, he doesn't even know if what he already does is helping her.
November looks away from Caspar, "I know but I just got the urge to just slam into it. I didn't mean to get hurt I just. . .Maybe we can just look at the sky." November gets off of the swings and walks to the grass. Her walk has a slight limp to it.
Caspar sighs and joins her after picking up his drink. The two lay back on the grass and stare up at the sky.
"So did you do the assignment for English?" He asked.
"Which one?"
"The one about the family tree."
"No. I tried asking my family but no one knew shit so I just gave up. It's the first assignment I would miss so it won't affect my grade that much."
"Oh really? I've missed like three assignments already. My mom doesn't know though."
"Why have you missed so many?"
"Because a lot of it I don't understand, like that one assignment where we had to find a quote and explained why we liked it. I don't have a favorite quote, even though I read a lot."
"I found that assignment easy."
"What quote did you choose?"
"Yet I believe the moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Created by imperfections."
"Why did you choose it?"
"Because it's how I feel sometimes", November sighs and looks up at the moon, "I feel alone and my future is uncertain. Hell I crashed my bike just cause I felt angry."
Caspar looks at the moon then back at her. "You know whenever you feel alone you can also text me and I'll speed like hell to wherever you're at. You don't have to feel alone you know."
Caspar sighs and sits up. He looks at the sky again and smiles softly. His gaze returns to her.
"The moon isn't always alone," he tells her quietly, "the moon, the stars are here with the moon. Even on nights that the stars don't twinkle as bright there will always be at least one star."
November looks at him surprised a bit. She never expected Caspar to tell her something like that. She sits up and sighs, "you're a really good friend you know"
Caspar smiles and puts a hand on her shoulder, "I know," he says jokily. "Do you wanna stay here or go somewhere else?"
"My bike is broken I can't go anywhere"
"That's okay you can ride with me. So do you want to go out on a midnight ride?"
November smiles and nods, "yeah that sound like fun", she says and gets up.
Caspar grabs her hand and leads her back to his bike. November gets her bag and gets on the bike. Caspar gets on as well and wonders where he would take her. He figures that they would just ride around until dawn. He starts pedalling and speeding down the empty streets. The moon's light illuminated the streets. Caspar smiles a bit as he feels November's arms around his waist.
November nuzzles her face into Caspar's back. She always feels at home with Caspar, better than being at her house. November yawns loudly and feels tired. Caspar hears it and starts to head to his house.
"You can sleep at my place if you want," Caspar offers.
"Won't your mom be mad. I don't think she likes me very much."
"Well she doesn't have to know, I'll lock my door which will give you enough time to hide if she knocks."
"Alright then I'll take you up on your offer."
Caspar smiles and nods, "Alright hold on tight." He speeds up and within two minutes arrived at his house. "One problem is that we can't go through the door we have to go through my window which should be opened."
Caspar gets off of the bike and holds out his hand for November. She takes his hand and gets off. She holds her bag close as she looks for a way to climb up to the window. Without thinking she starts to climb the tree in his front yard and stands on a branch inching closer to the window. She manages to get into the window and set her bag down. She waits for Caspar to join her.
Caspar put his bike away and uses a ladder to climb up to the window. He tries to be as quiet as he could be. If his mother woke up he's gonna be in serious trouble. He gets through the window and heads to the door to lock it. Once he does he walks over to November.
"So um. . . this is my room", he quietly chuckles. He barely realized that she's never been in his room.
"It's really nice and cozy in here," she whispered
"You can take off your jacket and shoes. I can sleep on this side of the bed and you can sleep on the other side." He says motioning to the right side of the bed and then to the left.
"Alright then." She says and takes off her jacket revealing she was wearing a short sleeve black shirt. Caspar notices that she has bruises on her arms and dried blood on her elbow.
"Oh damn I forgot you crash into a tree, hold on I'll get some bandages." Caspar says and heads to the nightstand opening the drawer. He rummage through the drawer, eventually pulling out a roll of bandages. He walks back to November and started wrapping her elbow.
November watches him and hums 'No Wonder I" by Lake. She usually doesn't take off her jacket, but she felt so comfortable around him. November moves her arm when he finishes and moves to the right side of the bed. She closes the window and gets comfortable on the bed. She wasn't used to sleeping on the bed lately, she would be out at night and wake up in a tree.
"Caspar."
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for being my star," she whispered before going to sleep.
Caspar smiles softly, "Thank you November for being my moon."
