Chapter 31: Mia
Grey's been glued to my hip since he's been back.
I wasn't complaining, only stating an observation. Grey said he missed me, and the feeling was mutual.
I was trying not to be a clingy or obsessive girlfriend while he was away. But when he didn't get random updates from me throughout the day, it bothered him. So he asked me to text him whenever I felt like it, even if it was about something silly, like I saw a cloud shaped like a banana, which I did.
Grey told me the guys were offered to do a few more events, and he joked about it being a mini American tour. When he had asked me how I felt about it, I told him I was happy the band was getting higher-paying gigs, and I thought they should do as many as possible.
His eyebrows had pinched together, and he looked at me with a concerned expression before saying, "I know this summer is supposed to be about us, and I didn't want you to feel like we haven't spent enough time together or something."
I reassured Grey that that wouldn't be the case. I wanted him to go off and be awesome, and I'd be waiting right here when he returned.
That brought a big smile to his face, and he looked so relieved.
While he went into the shower, I went into the kitchen to whip something up for dinner.
I had my head stuck in the fridge reaching for one of the water bottles in the back when I heard my phone vibrate with a text.
It was probably Ella. We've been texting on and off all day, getting to know each other even more.
Ella: Is Mom there? She just stormed out of the house and said she would be right back.
Me: You don't think...
I didn't get to finish the text before I heard a pounding at my door and I ran to grab it.
Mom was standing there in joggers and a white tee with her hair in a messy bun. She breezed right past me and walked straight into the living room.
I panicked. "Mom!" I intended for that to come more calmly, but it came out harshly. Grey was in the shower, and I still hadn't told him about her yet or Mia. I hadn't decided what I was going to do.
"Okay, I can't take it anymore. I have been trying to give you space these past few weeks. But since I saw you with Ella, I haven't been able to think of anything besides having my two girls together and with me." Mom looked upset and defeated.
"Listen, Mom. It isn't a good time. It's late, and Grey is..."
I saw the moment he must have stepped out of the out bathroom and into the hallway. Mom's eyes had looked over my shoulder.
"Hello, Greyson. It's been a while." She smiled politely at him.
Oh no. Oh no. I didn't bother turning around to see Grey's facial expression. I could just imagine him being confused and or slightly angry.
I didn't know what I expected him to say, but this wasn't it. "Hi, Mrs... er..." He didn't know what to call her since she and my dad had split up. Heck, not even I knew her new last name.
"You can just call me Lydia, dear." Mom waved off his confusion.
"Uh, sure. How are you?" I heard his footsteps come up behind me. He was being nice, acting as if he knew about her all along, and it was no surprise seeing her here.
Now, I was really in a panic. Grey was taking this too well.
"Pretty good. Just trying to talk some sense into my stubborn daughter." Mom smiled at me.
I laughed nervously.
"Is there any way you could help me?" she asked him sweetly. "She's bound to listen to you more than me. I've been trying to convince her weeks to come to visit me, talk to me, maybe even go on a few trips this summer with her sister and me."
My heart was pounding in my chest, and my throat was clenching up.
Grey nodded like this wasn't the first time he was getting this information. "I think that would be great. Maybe Mia needs to warm up to the idea. I know it's been weeks, as you said. But you know Mia's not someone to make any rash decisions. She liked to think things over thoroughly."
"Maybe too thoroughly if you asked me," Mom snickered.
I tried my best not to glare at her.
"Anyways, I'm sorry to barge in at this hour. I was at home, and I felt like I was going to explode, driving myself crazy with all of this." She took a deep breath, looking between the two of us. "I'll show myself out now," she said, walking past us. "Grey, can I count on you?" she said over her shoulder with one hand on the doorknob.
"Leave it all to me." I heard him say while I glared daggers at the back of his head.
Mom looked back at me, waving and saying goodnight.
I waited for the door to close before I tightly shut my eyes.
"So, when were you going to tell?" Grey snarled.
Crap. I was in trouble.
