Hyperdrive Failures

Hey. So, this little idea came to mind. I've been writing it for a while. I kind of worked on it, then stopped. And then worked on it again. It's not much, but hey.

"Go, go, go!" Princess Leia shouted, one hand gripping her seat while the other was on the back of Han's.

"I am going!" The smuggler shouted back, swerving the Millennium Falcon to the right, effectively avoiding a series of blasts.

"Well go faster!"

"I am!"

"Will you two stop arguing, and focus please? I'd like live another day, and I'm sure you would too!" a voice called out through Han's headset.

Leia and Han briefly looked back. "Sorry, Kid. But her Worshipfullness can be distracting," Han had replied, grinning.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

"Why, I-"

"Guys! Imperials behind us, remember? Argue later," the voice interrupted.

"I'm just saying, if Han hadn't been messing around and have been more careful, we wouldn't be in this situation," Leia huffed, gripping the two seats tighter as the ship made a sharp turn to the left.

Ignoring the sounds of battle going on behind them (and the princess), Han spoke into the microphone attached to his earpiece.

"How's it looking back there, Luke?"

"Could be worse!"

"That bad, huh?"

"That bad." Luke confirmed.

"How much we got?"

"We still have about nine TIE's on our tails," Luke replied back, both hands gripping the joysticks and firing at an incoming TIE.

"That's it?"

"What do you mean 'that's it'?" Leia scoffed.

"Well, it's better than before," Luke shrugged, firing a few more lasers. "You know, when there were at least fourteen?"

"You got that right," Han nodded, moving the Falcon a tad to the left.

"Yes!" Han heard Luke's voice cheer.

"What?"

"Eight."

"What?" the smuggler said after some brief hesitation.

"Eight now. I hit one."

"Great, Kid, don't get to cocky."

Han could almost hear Luke roll his eyes. "I'm not getting cocky."

"Sure, Kid." Han smirked. "So what's the count? Who hit more?"

Luke smiled, shaking his head. "Well, I got four. Do the math, and see how much Chewie got."

"Yeah, I'll get right on that. After we get out of this mess," He spoke into the microphone again, but this time to a different person. "Chewie, how are you holding up?"

"Aaargh." the familiar reply answered back.

"Yeah, well, it's not my fault."

"If he said what I think he did, then he's right," Organa agreed with what she assumed the Wookie said.

"You know, if you're not going to help out up here, Your Highness, you and Chewie can switch places," Han said. "I certainly wouldn't mind." He muttered to himself.

Chewbacca would've been helping Han co-pilot the Falcon, but with all the 'company' that decided to tag along, another gunner helping Luke did not seem like a bad idea. And Chewie was closer to the gun cock pit than Leia was at the time.

Before she could reply, and not only because she had heard what he had mumbled, C-3PO came into the cockpit.

"Excuse me for interrupting, but I thought you would like to know, Captain Solo, that the Millennium Falcon has taken damage on its hyperdrive systems and R2-D2 is working as fast as he can to repair it,"

Of course it is that. When is it not? "Well, how bad is it?"

"Damaged to the point that going light speed will be very risky, Sir."

Han shook his head, and spoke to himself. "Ah, Chewie will have to fix whatever he can now if we wanna get out of here alive." A slight grin came to his face. "Well, Princess, it looks like you will be moving after all."

Leia sighed, rolling her eyes. But she wasn't complaining. "Yes, I know. Let Chewie know I'm on my way." she unbuckled herself, and carefully made her way to her new destination, which was close by (thank goodness).

"Got it." He winced a little as the ship shook from another hit. "Good thing she knows how to shoot. And aim."

He spoke into his headset; "Hey, Chewie? Leia's gonna switch spots with ya, alright? I need you to go see what you can do about the hyperdrive systems."

"Aahhrrr,"

"Thanks," he swirled the ship far to the left -and evened it out again.

"By the way, how many TIE's did ya hit?"

"C'mon, Chewie, focus!" Luke shouted down the long 'tunnel' where the Wookie was on the other side.

"Arghhg!"

"I know he can, but c'mon buddy,"

He couldn't understand the Wookie's language very well, but he could decipher some words.

And he was pretty sure he heard the words 'Han', 'talking', and 'distracting'. Fair enough. And maybe the words 'taking my place'?

The sound of an explosion caused Luke to look back.

"Got another one?"

"Uurrn."

"Yeah, that's what I thought. Nice!" he praised.

His seat moved left and right, eyes focusing on the Imperial ships and the never ending blackness of space.

Another sound caught his attention, not an explosion or a cheer for being the cause of one, but of someone coming down the ladder.

"Chewie! I'm here, go and see what you can do with that hyperdrive."

Luke saw it was Leia who had come down. Ah, that's what was meant of 'taking my place'.

"Areghh," Chewbacca crawled out from the small space, and Leia gave him room to climb up the ladder. As soon as that was done, she quickly moved into the seat, putting the earpiece and microphone on her head.

"So, wanna tell me what's happening?"

"Hyperdrive's damaged. Again. And Chewie has to go help Artoo fix what he can," she shouted her reply.

Yes, they were wearing their headsets. But, they were for talking to whoever was in the cockpit. Or anywhere on the ship in general.

"The hyperdrive system is the problem again?"

"I keep telling that nerf herder he needed to get a new one. He doesn't listen!" She continued, "And it's not just because it took damage, it cuts out randomly. And in the worst times, too!"

"Yeah, well Han wouldn't get rid of it. It's too 'modified'. Or Chewified."

"You know I can here you, right? You both have headsets on." The person of their topic's voice reached both their ears.

"We know." They both grinned.

"Then stop. Seriously, that's all I can hear, you two babbling. About me, no less." Han snapped, sarcasm edging his tone.

Leia's eyes were on a TIE that was coming closer. "I thought you liked to be talked about?" Boom. Another one bites the dust.

"There's a fine line between talking about someone behind their back and talking about someone, who can hear you, with a headset on. As if they're not there. Which is what you two were doing."

"Sorry, Han." Luke shook his head with a smile. He knew Han was not mad. He was probably more smug, than anything. Speaking of which, why was he quiet all of the-

Without warning, the ship made an absolutely wonderful quick turn the the right, turning in a full loop-dee-loop. The pilot made several actions like it afterwards.

"Han! A little warning next time maybe?" Leia scowled.

"Oops. Sorry, Your Highness, forgot you were onboard."

Luke tried to keep down a laugh. Ah, there it was.

"Sure you did." Came the princess's retort.

"How you two manage to argue like this in the middle of an ambush amazes me. It truly does." Luke informed the two.

"Well, At least someone enjoys it." Leia muttered, trying to focus back on the task at hand.

"Okay, okay. I'll let you focus. Calm down."

"Thank you."

Luke decided to lighten the mood a bit. "Right, there's about six TIE's left. Shouldn't be to bad," the lightsaber wielding boy shrugged.

"You're getting cocky again, Kid." Han warned.

"There you go again! No I'm not! I'm just saying there's only six left," he defended.

"It's the way you're saying it." The smuggler insisted. Luke could hear his grin.

"Way I'm saying it..." Luke muttered. "I thought you said you were going to let us concentrate?"

"I said that to her Worshipness,"

"I can still hear you." Leia cued in.

"Han, ask Chewie if he fixed the hyperdrive yet," Luke cut in. They needed to go. It seemed as if there were more Imperials coming.

"Right."

Chewie, along with R2, were making quick fixes the the damaged hyperdrive as fast as they could. Something that would hold up till they escaped. C-3PO stood by, watching the two work.

"You two must hurry; we have to get out of here!"

A quick turn of the ship told the three that they did indeed needed to act fast. A series of beeps and a 'uuurghh' from Chewbacca answered him.

"Why, don't you call me a-"

"Chewie, how's the hyperdrive looking?" A quick snap interrupted him.

The Wookie didn't stop working. "Arrggh urrdg."

"Then don't. Get the main problem fixed and we'll worry about the rest once we get out of here alive!"

Holding a welder in his hand, Chewie made a last adjustment to a circuit board. Looking over the the small droid, he realized R2 was finished.

"Arrghhg!"

"Great! Hold on to something. Since the hyperdrive isn't properly fixed, light speed will be a bit bumpy."

That's when C-3PO decided to speak up, after seeing the 'fixed' drive.

"Sir, with the hyperdrive not fully functional, the odds of going to the destination you want in hyperspace is one thousand to one!"

"What did I tell you about telling me the odds?"

Han, pressing different buttons in the cockpit, reconnected his headset with the two gunners.

"Alright. Got word from Chewie, and the hyperdrive is stable enough the we can get out of here."

"Then what are we waiting for?" He heard Luke ask.

"Wait, hold on. 'Stable enough'? What's that supposed to mean?" Leia's accusing and uncertain voice.

"It means that we don't have time for Chewie and Artoo to fix the rest of the problems," Han started, turning a few notches on the right of him. "Unless you wanna be here any longer than we need to, then I suggest you hold on. This is going to be a little...unsafe."

"Unsafe?!"

"Hurry! More are coming!" Luke informed.

The smuggler started to warn them,"Alright, here we go!" Pressing the buttons necessary, the Millennium Falcon was thrust forward into full speed.

"Yeah!" Han shouted when the familiar blue like vortex met his view.

"We made it!" Luke cheered.

The Jedi in training and Princess of Alderron had left their seats and made their way to the cockpit.

|~•~|

"See? What'd I tell ya? We made it out alive." Han was being cocky now, much to the princess's dismay.

"You didn't say anything."

"I believe I did. C'mon, tell her, Kid!" Han looked to Luke for back up, but he got none of it.

"Sorry. I was busy being too cocky to remember." The boy shrugged, arms crossed.

Leia grinned, hands on hips.

"Thanks for the help, Kid." The sarcasm was very evident.

He only shrugged again, a grin playing on his face.

And there we go. Not sure about that ending. But tell me if you like it? I mean, the comment button is only a tap away. Or click, depending on what your using. I would appreciate it!

Thanks! More to come!

BC, out. Peace.
