7 more days
At the end of each day, the sun hides away, filling the sky with only the dim light illuminated by the moon. And even though we cannot see its bright light, we never fear that the sun won't show up the next day. People often feel the same way as the sun, ignorant of the fact that tomorrow is promised to no one. People often forget that life is a precious thing, and tend to waste it on things they falsely think are important. No one truly recognizes how lucky they are to be alive until something threatens to cut their life short.
Eri sat upright in the hospital bed, gazing out the window at all the brilliant colors painted into the sunset. She gripped onto the fluffy white blanket and hugged it close to her chest. Eri was in the hospital because she had fainted earlier that day. She felt slightly better, but the dizziness remained.
Her adopted father, Shota Aizawa, walked into the room and smiled as he saw Eri awake.
The sound of his footsteps caught Eri's attention. She looked away from the sunset in the window, and looked up at Aizawa instead. Her face lit up with joy as she saw him.
"Are you feeling alright?" Aizawa knelt down by her bedside before feeling the warmth of her forehead with his hand.
Despite her dizziness, Eri nodded.
"Did you see the pretty sky?" Eri pointed out the window at the dazzling sunset.
"Now I do." Aizawa directed his gaze to where Eri was pointing, "The sunset makes beautiful colors, doesn't it?"
"Yeah."
There was a moment of silence as Eri looked back at the sunset through the window, studying it's beauty.
"Someday, maybe I'll be as pretty as the sky." Eri's eyes glimmered from the display of colors lighting up the evening sky.
"You already are." Aizawa brushed some of Eri's loose hair behind her ear and smiled.
Giggling, Eri turned back to Aizawa with the brightest grin on her face. Her eyes were closed, which emphasized the purity of her smile. It was a happiness that Aizawa wanted to protect and nurture, because it was long overdue. Every one of Eri's smiles were like delicate flowers; pricelessly beautiful and sweet, yet extremely fragile.
The moment was interrupted as one of the doctors entered the room. He had a serious, yet sad look on his face.
"Aizawa, the blood test results have come back. Please follow me to the laboratory room." The doctor then motioned towards the door.
Aizawa nodded. Turning to Eri, he kissed her forehead and said, "I'll be back soon, ok?"
"Ok." Eri waved to Aizawa as he stood up and walked towards the door.
Aizawa followed the doctor to the laboratory room where the results were waiting. The doctor sat down on a swivel chair and offered Aizawa a chair as well. Then, the doctor looked down, deciding how he should tell him the news.
"What is it?" Aizawa asked.
The doctor stayed quiet for a moment, before turning his computer screen slightly so that he could show Aizawa photograghs taken from the blood sample they took from Eri earlier. He pointed to small blob shaped particles in the photograph, "These.... these are rare."
Aizawa looked closely at the particles, "What are they? Some sort of virus?"
"No... these are cancer cells."
Aizawa felt as if his stomach dropped. There was a heavy ache in his heart as he heard that word... cancer.
After a few moments of Aizawa processing the information, he asked, "Can it be cured?"
"I'm afraid not. This particular type of blood cancer is extremely rare. There's only a few other cases in the world, so we don't know enough about it." The doctor looked back at his computer screen, "What we do know, is that a likely cause of this cancer could've been developed from misuse or damage to one's quirk or body."
Aizawa thought back to what the Hassaikai had done to her... what Chisaki had done to her. Aizawa would never forgive that evil man.
Desperately, Aizawa wanted to find a way to help Eri, "What about treatments then??"
"Well, we'd be able to provide supplements for her that could help with the pain. But I'm afraid that's all we can do."
Aizawa looked at the floor. He thought to himself about all the things he wished he could've done better, to help prevent this cancer from ever developing. Eri was so pure and innocent, she deserved to have a bright and happy childhood, not one where she had to fight a deadly disease right after being abused by an evil Yakuza organization.
"I'm... sorry we didn't find it sooner..." the doctor said in a sad tone.
Aizawa looked back up at the doctor as he spoke.
The doctor continued, "From this data, Eri is... already on stage 4."
Aizawa froze. Stage 4? Isn't that... the last stage? He felt his heart ache again, yet this time, it was way heavier than before.
"We estimate that she has 7 more days."
...
Aizawa couldn't move. He couldn't respond. In his mind, he pictured the sweet memories he had of Eri, where she was smiling. She held his hand when they went on walks. She showed him drawings she made for him. They dressed up as princesses together. She was just beginning to get used to a healthy childhood. Why? It can't be true... Only one week?
"I know that this is a difficult thing to hear, but it's going to be okay." The doctor tried his best to make Aizawa feel better, "The next thing to do is to tell her."
The pain that Aizawa felt in his heart was unbearable, so he couldn't even imagine the fear Eri would feel when the time came to tell her. He would have to tell her that she has cancer... that she was going to die in only 7 days. How would someone tell a child that? How..?
Aizawa felt his eyes become watery, despite the dryness that they have had for so long.
The time came to go back to the room where Eri was waiting for their return. As Aizawa approached the room, he took in a deep breath before entering.
As he opened the door, he saw Eri's bright smile, "Yay! You're back!"
Aizawa had to grit his teeth and look away from her to keep himself from breaking down into tears. Eri noticed, and said, "Are you alright..? Papa?"
"Yeah." Aizawa tried his best to show a smile so that she wouldn't worry, then he sat at the foot of her bed. He took in another deep breath, knowing it would be wrong to not tell her, but telling her the truth would be hard.
Here it goes...
"So, the doctors found something... in your body. It's something that's making you sick."
Eri relaxed herself, showing a calm and understanding expression. Then, she nodded for Aizawa to continue.
He hesitated, trying to find the right words to say. He felt his stomach tie into knots that wouldn't come undone. This was going to be scary for her to hear, no matter what Aizawa's word choice was. He looked down at the floor before returning his gaze to Eri. Her eyes were bright and glimmering with curiosity.
She noticed his hesitation, and asked, "What did they find?"
Aizawa took in a deep breath to calm himself, "They've found... a rare type of blood cancer."
The curiosity in her eyes faded. Then, showing little reaction, Eri looked down at the sheets of the bed.
"It's not contagious, though, so you don't need to worry about giving hugs or kisses." Aizawa tried his best to lighten the conversation.
Eri still didn't respond and continued to peer down at the sheets. She didn't appear scared or fearful in any way, instead she looked deep in thought with a hint of sadness.
She looked out the window, to the sunset which was beginning to fade. There was still a touch of color left in the sky, but it was weakening. Aizawa saw her shifted gaze, so he as well looked out the window to the now fading colors. They shared a moment of silence together as they watched the sky become darker through the slightly smudged glass panes.
While they both continued to watch the sky, the silence was broken by Eri's soft voice.
"Am I going to die?"
