6 more days
Aizawa opened his eyes. He was lounging back on one of the chairs in the hospital. For a split second, he was confused how he ended up there. But then the memories came back. He had fallen asleep in the hospital with Eri so that she wouldn't be alone. Aizawa looked to his right, where Eri was still sleeping, snuggled into the fluffy blankets on the hospital bed. There was a small wave of panic that she might've passed away in her sleep, now that he knew about her cancer. He swiftly stood from his chair to check on her. She layed on her side, facing away from Aizawa and towards the window. Aizawa's sudden panic began to calm a bit as he saw her sheets slightly rising and falling with each of her breaths.
He was surprised to see how calm her reaction was the day before, but even though she was calm, there was still sadness in her eyes.
Aizawa's thoughts were then interrupted when he saw Eri's eyes open faintly. She let out a small yawn before looking up at Aizawa with a soft smile, "Good morning.."
"Good morning, Eri." Aizawa tried his best to put on a smile, even though it ended up weak.
Eri slowly sat up and spread her arms as she yawned again. Then as one of her arms rested itself on the blankets again, the other lifted her hand to her forehead. She squeezed her eyes shut and grimaced for a moment, before returning her expression to a relaxed state.
"Do you have a headache?" Aizawa asked gently.
"Yeah, a little." Eri removed her hand from her forehead, and instead used it to rub her eyes. She looked to her right, towards the window, before she put her hand down.
The door opened, and through it came the doctor from yesterday. He was holding a small pill bottle in one hand and a clipboard in the other. After setting the clipboard down on a nearby table, he turned to Aizawa and handed him the pill bottle, "Have her take these every few hours. It should help with the waves of pain and headaches."
Aizawa accepted the bottle and put it in his pocket. Then, the doctor turned to Eri, "How are we feeling?"
"I'm okay," Eri said, looking up at him showing a small smile.
"That's good." The doctor smiled back, "You're free to go when you'd like, it's gorgeous out today."
There was a glimmer in Eri's eyes. She looked out the window to her right, seeing the trees sway in the wind. Excitement filling her body, she tried to push the covers off of herself the best she could with her weak arms.
Noticing her struggles, Aizawa helped remove the covers that were on top of her.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed and carefully slid off. After steadying herself on the ground, she looked up at Aizawa and smiled, eager to go outside.
Aizawa could see the excitement in her eyes, and it amazed him. He smiled softly, trying his best to keep his tears from spilling. This young girl was as happy as ever, even after knowing that she wasn't going to live past a week.
Knowing that your life will come to an end soon, makes you all the more grateful to be alive in that moment.
Aizawa held out his hand, and Eri held onto it. Her hands were so small compared to his, and Aizawa knew that her hands would be that small and young forever. He knew he would miss this, so he had to do his best to treasure every moment for this next week. A tear began to fall from his eye, so he quickly wiped it away with his other hand so that Eri wouldn't see.
"Alright, ready to go outside?" Aizawa asked.
"Yeah!" Eri smiled brightly.
Eri sat down to slip on some soft slippers that the hospital provided, but she wouldn't let go of Aizawa's hand, so Aizawa crouched down next to her.
Once she was finished, Aizawa helped her up. The doctor opened the door and motioned his hand towards it for Aizawa and Eri to walk through.
As they made their way through the doorway and down the hall, Eri's grip slighty tightened on Aizawa's hand due to her anticipation. Aizawa paused and looked down at her as he placed his other hand on the handle of the door leading outside. Eri then looked up at him as well. Their silence spoke many languages.
Aizawa opened the door and a cool breeze blew against them. Eri's eyes widened and then closed as she felt it's soothing touch. Her hair gracefully flew backwards, and she could feel the breeze weave through each of the strands.
Aizawa watched as a smile formed on her face. After the breeze had passed, she opened her eyes, looking up at Aizawa she said, "I love outside."
Aizawa smiled softly, "Me too."
Eri took a step forward, followed by another, then she continued to lead Aizawa out of the building while still holding his hand.
She took in a deep breath of the fresh air through her nose, then looked back at Aizawa with a wide grin on her face.
"Do you want to go to a park?" Aizawa asked.
Her face lit up again, "Yeah!"
Aizawa nodded and walked alongside her to a park that was just a few blocks away. Once they got there, Eri let go of Aizawa's hand to explore a small flower patch. There were many types of flowers there, and Eri closely examined each of them.
Aizawa was about to join Eri with the flowers when his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw it was Present Mic. He was asking where he had been, and that Aizawa was missing class.
Aizawa looked up from his phone to see Eri gently stroking the petals of a daffodil. Thinking to himself, he knew he shouldn't teach his class for the week, and his students might want to see Eri. He looked back at his phone and texted Mic the situation.
After he sent the message, he heard Eri speak, "These ones are my favorite."
Aizawa looked up to see her pick a bright pink tulip. She got up from the ground and handed it to him. Aizawa put his phone back in his pocket and accepted the tulip.
"It's beautiful, thank you," he said.
The two of them spent the remainder of the day at various parks, while taking breaks every once in a while for her medication. When the sun began to set, Aizawa said they should head back home. Eri began to get too sleepy to walk on her own, so Aizawa carried her in a piggyback ride.
Once they got to their house, Aizawa carried her to her bed and tucked her in, since she had already dozed off. He gave her a soft kiss on the forehead and wished her goodnight. Then he turned off the light and gave her one last glance before closing the door so she could sleep peacefully.
Going to the kitchen, he got a vase for the tulip Eri picked for him. He filled the vase with water, properly cut the flower's stem, and placed it inside the vase.
Aizawa sat down in a chair positioned so that the delicate tulip was in view. After admiring it for a moment, he took his phone out from his pocket.
57 unread messages
12 missed calls
Aizawa grimaced as he saw his notifications. He opened his messages to see that Present Mic had been panicking about Eri. Shinso, Mirio, and Midoriya were also messaging him about her.
Did Mic tell them too??
They all wanted to see her.
Aizawa stopped halfway through reading the messages, interrupted by a tear landing on the screen. He looked up at the tulip leaning against the sides of the vase, picturing Eri's smile.
It was too soon. He wanted more time. She needed more time.
Aizawa set his phone face down next to the vase. Then, he rested his forehead in his hand and began to cry. He tried to be as silent as possible so that he wouldn't wake up Eri, but he couldn't stop the tears that had been building up all day.
"...why are you crying?"
Aizawa looked up to see Eri stepping out from behind a wall. Then he turned away for a second to wipe his tears.
"You don't have to worry about me, okay?" his voice was shaky.
Eri walked up to him and wrapped her weak arms around him. This sent more tears down Aizawa's face, as he did the same, holding her close.
Minutes went by, and neither let go.
"Don't cry when I'm gone okay? I don't want you to be sad." Eri said softly without letting go.
Aizawa's heart sank.
"You.. you should probably go to sleep, so that you're not tired tomorrow." Aizawa gently released her from his embrace, "I'll walk you to bed... okay?"
"Okay."
Eri held onto Aizawa's hand as they walked to her bedroom. Eri got snuggled under the covers of her bed once they arrived. Aizawa helped tuck her in again before giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"I love you." Eri looked up at Aizawa and smiled.
"I love you too." Aizawa smiled back, "How about we get candy apples tomorrow?"
"Yeah!" Eri smiled brightly.
"Alright, sleep tight, I'll see you in the morning okay?"
"Okay! Goodnight papa."
"Goodnight Eri..."
