8 - The Beginning of a Beautiful Hatred
"Guess what came in my mail today," Sebastian sang as he came over to her desk. Cara looked up miserably from her laptop and gave stuck out her tongue when he wasn't looking. She had been in a mood since morning.
"What?" Matilda said, already knowing what was inside the envelope that Sebastian was holding.
"Free movie tickets." he sang as he took them out from the envelope, "I won em for some free giveaway. I'm not sure how they got my contact info but who cares? It's free and it's this Saturday. Wanna go?"
One thing about Sebastian Spencer that always surprised everyone was his love of free stuff. Despite his family's wealth, he would never turn down anything that was free.
"Isn't that just peeerfect," Cara grumbled as she typed away furiously.
"What's her deal?" Sebastian asked Matilda quietly, half sitting on her desk.
"Calvin." Was all Matilda need to say for Bas to understand.
"So, what do you say?" He asked. Matilda was flattered that he had thought of her for the extra ticket. She had gotten him two because it seemed more plausible than winning only one movie ticket in some made up giveaway.
Matilda considered his offer, "It's too late in the night Bas. Plus, you know classics aren't my thing."
"Yeah that's what everyone keeps telling me."
Everyone? So I'm not the first person he asked. Matilda thought disappointedly.
"Hey Cara," he turned, "you want to—"
"No. Nonono." Matilda grabbed his hands and led him away from her desk. She could not have Sebastian taking a date to this thing and ruining her plans.
"What?" Sebastian said.
"Nothing. You're taking me remember?" Matilda smiled.
"I thought you said—"
"Changed my mind. I'll meet you at the theater, yeah?"
"Or we could go to my place. Have dinner and then leave for the movie afterwards." Sebastian suggested.
If he had said that to her before Kat, she would have accepted. Sebastian and Matilda were platonically close enough that they could hang out at each other's places, even sleep over without it turning into something weird. But now, it felt wrong.
Matilda had already begun to think of Kat as Sebastian's girlfriend and she didn't want to breach any loyalty she felt towards another woman.
"Nah. I got some errands to run." She said.
"Well okay. See you at midnight then." He said.
Matilda had originally planned to let Bas go alone, but she realized it would be easier to just watch over him and Kat whilst accompanying him. She rolled her eyes at the thought of babysitting the two of them but at least she would get a free movie out of it.
Even if it was a classic, which she always found boring.
***************
"I really like the look of this place," Ursula said as they settled into a table for six. Matilda had suggested the gang change things up and go to Captain Flint's instead of The Nook like they always did.
"It's very inaccurate, but they've really captured the feel of being in a ship." Eric stated.
"Who cares man. It's pirates." Phil said in his usual dudebro excitement.
"I really hate that I can't drink," Mal frowned.
"I'm sure they have something non-alcoholic too babe." Phil consoled her.
"I still say we should go to The Nook." Sebastian said as his eyes kept darting around.
Matilda smiled evilly to herself when she saw how nervous Bas he looked. Which he rightly was because Matilda had brought them here purely so that he could run into Kat again. Sadly, there was no sign of the tall, shapely woman with the golden curls. But the night was young and they hadn't even given their order yet.
"Nah. I like this place." Matilda said slyly.
It wasn't as crowded as it had been the last time they were there, but there were still plenty of people around that the two bartenders had their hands full.
They really need to hire extra help.
Typical to form, Sebastian was the one to give their orders. They'd decided to get food first, and then drinks. While they waited for the food, they talked about how their weeks had been and the struggles at work. Things that may have sounded benign or inconsequential to anyone else but to the gang, they mattered.
It mattered to them that Eric stubbed his toe at work and got a big bruise (Matilda even curled her toes in response to that visual), it mattered that Ursula was frustrated with a new member of her bakery—an ungrateful, disrespectful teenager (damn are we really that old?), it mattered that Mal was frustrated with the pre-trial procedures of her case which had taken over two years by this point, it mattered that Phil was proud that he still retained his youthful athleticism—which he rediscovered when he was teaching his young cousin about the game last Sunday.
Matilda—who somehow always ended up a little removed from the gang, wherever they sat—looked at them as they laughed and shared their stories and felt a sense of belonging she had rarely felt anywhere else. These were her people and she loved each and every one of them. She would do anything for them.
When the food arrived they all gorged it down like a pack of wolves. Three plates of cheesy fries, a large tray of burger sliders, onion rings and chicken wings and a plate of pathetic looking salad for Mal.
"Mal, you can't say no to fries!" Ursula scolded, "It is illegal. It's in the constitution!" She held up the long fry as cheese dripped onto Mal's salad. Matilda thought she saw Phil's arm around Mal's waist tighten as she looked at the fry in Ursula's hand.
"Nah. I'm not feeling like it." She said.
"But you ate so much last time." Eric pointed out.
Matilda realized that Mal hadn't eaten much at Alton's place either when they had gone for lunch.
"I'm not hungry right now," Mal bit her lip, "Besides, I have to eat healthy for the baby. So no fried foods."
"I can get you something else Mal. We can order take out, have it delivered here." Sebastian offered. Mal squeezed his hand with a small smile.
"Thank you Bas. But no. I'll just have this." She sighed as she eyed the leaves on her plate.
Ursula leaned forward toward Matilda, "Tilly, have you seen the bartender?" She whispered but it didn't matter. Everyone heard her.
"Yesss." Mal hissed in approval, eyes glued to the bar counter.
Matilda smiled like the Cheshire cat, "I know, right?"
All three guys leaned over to see what Ursula was talking about; the dark haired, smoldering bartender in the red shirt.
"He looks pretty basic to me." Phil sulked.
Mal pulled his chin to her, "Jealous?" She said it in a way which made it obvious they were going to start kissing so Matilda looked away.
"I can see how he is attractive, objectively speaking." Eric noted and Ursula laughed.
"Objectively speaking," she mocked and Eric bit her cheek, to which she let out a squeal. "Don't worry, love," she told Eric. "My eyes are only for you."
But then she turned to Matilda, "did you see his arms?"
"Yes!" Matilda's eyes widened in delight, "You can tell he totally works out."
"I don't see what the big deal is," Sebastian said as he tried to flex his arms nonchalantly, which wasn't very nonchalant at all.
"Sebastian!" Ursula laughed.
"What was that?" Mal asked through laughter.
"What was what? I didn't do anything." But he was laughing with them and still flexing.
"Ask him out." Mal suggested to Matilda.
"Nah," Matilda looked back, "I'm not looking for anyone right now."
"When are you ever?" Sebastian said which earned him a napkin in the face.
"He is right though. You can't be single forever." Ursula pointed an onion ring at Matilda.
"You guys are siding with Bas? He's the perpetual bachelor over here?" She pointed her thumb at him.
"Hey! I date... occasionally."
"Yes and... how serious was your last relationship?" Mal countered in her lawyer-like manner.
"Well, not everyone dates to get serious."
"Not everyone dates for just fun either." Phil countered, locking his fingers with his wife's, "You gotta get serious some time bud."
"Why would I? Who else will marry Tilly when she becomes an old cat lady." He locked his arm around Matilda's neck much like a sibling would.
"Hey!" she laughed trying to get out of his grip, "Don't keep me as your plan B!"
The gang laughed and from the corner of her eye Matilda caught the sight of Kat. Damn, when did she arrive? She was seated in the corner with Georgie and a couple of other people. She was looking at Sebastian and Matilda.
Oh no, she's going to get the wrong idea.
Matilda wiggled her way out of Sebastian's grip and straightened her blouse. She looked over to Kat's table but the woman wasn't looking their way anymore.
Sebastian hadn't seen Kat. He was busy chatting with the gang but Matilda's focus was fully on the woman. She looked to Sebastian then back to Kat. How the hell was she supposed to arrange an encounter between them?
"Right, drinks! I plan on getting wasted tonight!" Ursula declared.
"Ah, we're going to call it night," Phil said.
"What?" Sounded the gang.
"Come on, man. Stay for one drink." Eric said.
Phil shook his head, "Mal can't drink anyways and we have sessions with the doctor in the morning."
With a flurry of apologies and refusing the cajoling the gang was offering, Mal and Phil left.
"Damn. Are we going to turn into those old people who don't have fun anymore?" Sebastian said when it was just the four of them.
"Welcome to adulthood." Eric raised his empty wine glass.
"I'm gonna go get us some shots." Sebastian offered.
"Yay! Shots." Ursula said. Matilda didn't bother telling him what she wanted, he already knew.
When he left, Matilda saw Kat get up as well. She stopped half way when she saw Sebastian over at the bar but then kept walking confidently. Matilda excused herself from Eric and Ursula who had begun to make out (Ugh, it's like watching your parents kiss). She sneaked over to the bar where Sebastian seemed to have finally noticed Kat.
He had his hands in his pockets, something Matilda knew from experience was a result of nerves. He was trying to look away whilst stealing glances at Kat peripherally. Kat was doing the same but only when Sebastian was looking away. Matilda held back the urge to roll her eyes.
She waited a while; waited for either one of them to say something, for Sebastian to make a move or for them to realize they were both stealing looks when the other wasn't looking.
But nothing happened.
Oh for heaven's sake!
"Hi there." Both Kat and Bas jumped when Matilda came up behind them.
"Where did you come from?" Sebastian said. Matilda ignored him.
"We've met right? You're Kat?" Matilda held out her hand. Kat hesitated before taking it.
"Yeah. Katrin Olsen." She gave a quick glance to Sebastian who cleared his throat uncomfortably.
"Katrin this is my friend Sebastian. Sebastian, this is Kat."
"Yeah I caught the name." Sebastian said wryly. Kat narrowed her eyes at him.
"Have you given our order?" Matilda asked.
"Yup." And just then the bar tender produced three shots and a glass of orange juice.
"Non alcoholic right?" Matilda asked.
"Of course. Wouldn't want you to break out into hives, or whatever alcohol intolerance does."
"Cool. Kat you wanna join us?" Matilda could see Kat's friends watching this exchange from their table.
"Um. No." She said, clearly weirded out by this strange woman in a black suit who was suddenly acting way too chummy.
"Ah, you can't handle liquor too?"
"No. I can handle it just fine."
"So can my buddy here." She patted Sebastian's shoulder, "Bas let me take those and why don't you see if there's anything else you'd like to get, eh?" She took the tray from his hands before he could respond and hurried away before they could see how hard she was cringing.
That was horrible! That's a horrible way to introduce someone! What was that? She screamed inwardly.
"What was that all about?" Kat asked, looking at Sebastian as if he had answers. He gave her the same confused look and raised his hands in a 'I don't know' fashion.
"Would you... like to have a drink?" Sebastian had never felt this tongue tied in the presence of a woman.
Kat looked at him and he felt she was about to say yes. But then she looked back to her friends all watching and shook her head.
"I don't think so. But thanks for the offer." She said politely but firmly, letting Bas know she would not change her mind. He then excused himself, ready to unload on Matilda.
"Till, what the fuck?" He hissed through clenched teeth.
"What?" Eric and Ursula were oblivious to them, lost in each other's mouths.
"You... totally embarrassed me. What the hell was that? Do you know that woman?"
"No. But it looked like she wanted a drink from you."
"No it did not! Never do something like that again, Till." Sebastian looked genuinely angry. Matilda had often seen him rage in the office when someone messed up really bad but it had very rarely been directed at her. Matilda didn't like it.
"Sorry Bas. Won't happen again." She sipped her drink.
*************
Matilda shivered a little as she stood on the corner of the street looking for Sebastian's car. The witch was wrapped in her black overcoat and had tied her hair back in a pony tail. She scowled at the night as people poured into the multiplex.
Ugh, couples.
Without her makeup, she looked patchy and sickly. Sebastian barely recognized her when he spotted her from his car.
"I'm always surprised by how tiny your eyes are without eyeliner." He said as he approached her. It earned him a well-aimed punch in the arm.
"Jerk."
"Loser."
They both chuckled as they entered the theater.
"You know I usually don't go for classics. They seem so boring to me." Sebastian admitted.
"Bruh I know. Especially black and white ones."
"This one's black and white?"
"Duh! You didn't know?"
"Well... no. Should we ditch?"
Matilda's eyed widened, "And let a free ticket go to waste?" She quickly reasoned.
"Nah, you're probably right. Let's just see how it is." After a pause he added, "I should have given these to Alton. He loves the classics."
Matilda snorted. Of course he does. He's probably watched every single one of these movies, just so he can brag about how cultured he is in the art of film.
"What?" Sebastian asked.
"Nothing. Just that the classics suit your brother."
"It's really more of a family thing. Our dad used to love these movies. He'd force us to watch the television reruns every weekend. I guess it's Alton's way of staying connected to him."
"Oh." Damn. She thought guiltily. She hoped Sebastian would talk more about his parents but he changed the subject to a poster of the new superhero film and Matilda followed suit not wanting to force any conversations he did not want to have. They stood in line to get their popcorn, chatting movies and work.
"Yeah what's the deal with Cara and Calvin? It just seems unnatural to me."
"I know right? She's too good for him."
"I actually meant it the other way around. Cal's a great guy." That earned him another punch.
"You know I should sue you for domestic violence." Sebastian grinned, feigning hurt.
"Go ahead. It would give me street cred."
Sebastian chortled, "What street would that be credible on?"
"Shut up."
Sebastian laughed and Matilda wished that she could freeze time like this. She wanted to live in these tiny moments where they talked about nonsense and laughed without reserve. But their significance lied in the fact that they were temporary. Soon, Sebastian would be together with Kat and he would share all of his time with her. Even as a friend, Matilda would see less and less of him till eventually the only time they would hang out with just the two of them would be at their work.
Matilda felt down all of a sudden.
"Till, I gotta take a piss. You mind holding these?" Sebastian handed her the snacks. She hugged the popcorn and held the drinks in her hands. "Be right back." He said and rushed off to the toilets.
Matilda stood around, waiting. She looked in the crowd for Kat's curvy figure but could not—wait, was that her? No that was someone else. The theater was more crowded than she had anticipated. Apparently people loved late night showings.
A lot of couples were there, some of them glowing, some of them not. Matilda scowled at all of them.
Pah! Stupid couples, pah!
She pictured herself as an old curmudgeon walking around and waving her stick at the kids for kissing in front of her. She quite enjoyed that image of herself and decided that old age was far better than youth. In youth you had possibilities; there was still hope. Hope that you might end up happy, hope that things might change, that the guy might pick you instead of his perfect girl. Old age did away with all of these hopes. Old age was the inevitable truth.
"You know standing there, grinning to your self makes you look more unhinged than you normally do." The sound pierced through her beloved fantasy like a spike of ice. A plethora of emotions went through her; shock, annoyance, worry and then finally, contempt.
"Oh God, why are you here?" Her scowl deepened.
"I have good taste in films. I doubt you're here for the cultural festival." Alton looked at her with contempt of his own. He looked out of place in his immaculate, navy blue suit.
"The what?"
"The cultural festival. Held by the Society of Theatrical Arts. They are showing influential films every weekend and holding discussion groups about their—"
"Oh is that what this thing is about? I thought it was just a one off showing."
Alton looked peeved, "No, it is not." He said in a clipped tone. "Why are you here Miss Merryweather?"
"Why do you keep referring to me like you're my principal or something? You know I'm only two years younger than you."
"How else would I refer to you, Miss Merryweather?"
"Just use my name? Matilda?"
"No."
Matilda rolled her eyes, "I'm here to watch Casablanca, Riley."
"No, you're not."
She laughed, "Okay, dude. You know more about me than I do I guess."
"Are you following me?"
She snorted, "What? Why would I follow you?"
"It's been known to happen."
"What kind of people have you been hanging out with? No, I am not following you Riley Alton Spencer. Now go away. I'm waiting for someone."
"Who?"
As if in answer, Sebastian came out of the toilet. "'Kay, Till. We should—Alton you came to this too?"
Alton looked between Matilda and Sebastian and Matilda could see his mind working out what was going on.
"This is not a date." She blurted out.
"Y-Yeah. Of course not." Sebastian gave her a 'What the fuck?' look.
"We should be going." She pushed Sebastian till he started walking away from Alton.
"Wow, I didn't expect to see him here." Sebastian said.
"Neither did I." Matilda said, feeling a sense of dread. Alton Spencer's appearance was very unexpected. She had hoped that after the luncheon at his home, she would never have to see him again. But now he was here. And worse than that, he was probably thinking that she and Bas were out together.
"Matilda are you okay?"
"Hmm?" She suddenly realized that she was clutching his arm very tightly. "Oh yeah. I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"Totally." Matilda smiled. They went inside and took their seats. They were playing previews on the screen.
"Oh no, wait. You sit here." Matilda pulled Sebastian towards the inner seat. That was the one next to the seat number on Kat's ticket.
Matilda looked around for Kat. Her seat was empty and the movie was about to start. Matilda bit her lip. Was Kat not going to show? Had Matilda misjudged this?
Of course, realistically speaking, there were a million ways this entire situation could go wrong. There were just too many variables to predict. But in cases of true love, fate often came through in mysterious ways, often quite unrealistically.
Getting stuck in an elevator, accidentally ending up living in the same apartment due to a contract issue, having a one night stand only to find out they're your boss; fate found endless ways of getting true loves together.
Or so Matilda had thought.
The seat to her other side groaned as someone slid into it. She turned to find a big, bulky man giving a nod in hello. She gave a small wave back and turned to Sebastian.
Kat's seat was still empty. She wasn't coming.
Damn. Matilda thought bitterly as the lights went down and the movie started.
The man besides her began to chat with someone else. Great. Is he going to talk the entire time? Matilda wondered.
She sighed, disappointed. But not really. If she was being totally honest, she wasn't completely sad about things.
Sure, it would have been nicer if Kat had come along but just being with Sebastian was not a bad deal either. The thing about their relationship was that they could spend time together, without speaking a word to each other. They still enjoyed each other's company, even in silence.
Matilda smiled a little and ate her popcorn.
"You are acting so weird today." Sebastian said in her ear. She bumped her elbow with his.
The bulky man besides her got up and his seat shifted as he did. Matilda focused on the screen but someone got into the bulky man's seat. Someone much lighter, since the only indication of their presence was the swish of the seat and the smell of expensive cologne.
"Hey." Sebastian waved at the person sitting beside her.
Matilda turned and couldn't help but jerk back in shock. "Gah!" She exclaimed, clutching her chest.
"Tilly, Jesus!" Sebastian said disapprovingly.
"Why so surprised, Miss Merryweather? We just met outside." Alton's sharp voice was low and cut through the sound of the opening credits like a blade.
"That's not your seat." She hissed.
"It is now." He smiled.
Son of a—
"Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry!" A flurry of whispered apologies made Matilda turn. Kat was making her way to the seat besides Sebastian from the other side. Matilda felt delighted. She almost forgot that Alton was still sitting beside her.
Sebastian audibly sucked in a breath as Kat took her seat. When Kat discovered Sebastian, her eyes bulged and snapped immediately to the screen. Her stiff posture could not hide how aware she was of Sebastian. For his part, he pretended not to notice her too.
Unfortunately for them, this was not acceptable to the fairy godmother.
"Kat! Hey Kat! It's you right!" Matilda whispered, leaning over Sebastian to wave her hand in front of Kat. Kat looked at Matilda like she wanted to kill her.
Besides Kat, a woman turned. It was her friend Jules. She saw Sebastian and made a disgusted face.
"Kaaat! It is you! It's me. Matilda! We met before at Captain Flint's!" Matilda grinned. In the dark of the theater with the screen casting a strange mix of shadow and light, her grin looked positively evil.
Kat finally nodded just to shut her up.
"What a total and unexpected coincidence that we ran into you here." Matilda said. It earned her a "Shhh!" from somewhere in the back. From behind Kat, Jules looked at Matilda like she was mental.
"Yes, nice to meet you too..." Kat paused.
"Have you met Sebastian?" Matilda pointed her thumb to the absolutely mortified man besides her. Sebastian hid his face in his hand.
"Bas," Matilda smacked him, "say hi."
"Hello." He said to Kat. Kat only acknowledged him with a small nod and sank back in her chair.
Good. Now they can't ignore each other.
When she turned the other way she found Alton curiously staring at her. She focused her eyes on the screen. The movie started.
She kept stealing glances at Kat, who seemed distracted by Sebastian's presence; rubbing her neck and crossing and uncrossing her arms. Her friend Jules kept whispering something to her and Kat was noticeably ignoring her. Matilda wasn't worried about Jules. If Kat got to know Bas, then things would work out on their own. She just had to get Bas and Kat closer.
And by that she meant literally.
"I thought I made it clear that I did not like you and my brother together." Alton whispered from the other side. Matilda glowered at him.
"We aren't together." She spat out. "This is a platonic thing."
"I am sure it is."
Matilda ignored him and focused on her spell. She closed her eyes just to block Alton out.
Blue mist emanated from beneath Sebastian's seat. It wrapped itself around the chair and the cushion became a little slanted to the side where Kat sat. Sebastian was surprised to find himself leaning into Kat. The mist started to wrap around Kat's seat and that slanted too, in Bas's direction.
This led to an awkward moment where neither Kat nor Bas could understand why their shoulders were suddenly touching or why their seats were suddenly slanting. Kat tried to pull her seat back into place but she failed. Bas did the same with the same results. They both looked at each other, confused.
"I can change seats if you want." He said quietly, "There are empty ones at the back."
"Won't your date mind?" Kat asked.
"Matilda's not my date. She's just a friend. It's totally fine." Sebastian began to get up. Matilda grabbed him and held him back.
"What are you doing?"
"There's something wrong with my seat." He told her.
"Shhh!"
"Quiet down."
Voices scolded from the back and front.
Matilda leaned over, "I don't see anything wrong with it." She argued. Sebastian got up but she held onto him. Oh no you don't mister. You are getting together with your soulmate tonight.
"Hey, sit down." Someone whispered harshly.
"You're blocking my view."
"Shhhh!"
Sebastian sat down, giving Kat an apologetic look. Kat pointed to Jules and gave an equally apologetic expression. They both chuckled as they accepted the fact that they would have to sit like this.
Matilda smiled at the sight.
"What are you smiling at?" Alton hissed besides her. On the screen Humphrey Bogart, wearing a white jacket was discussing some exit visas for someone named Laszlo.
"Shouldn't you be watching the movie?" Matilda hissed back. She had half a mind to turn Alton into a toad.
"The drama here is much more interesting." He quipped. If he wasn't so hateful, Matilda would have laughed.
They sat in silence. Matilda tried to focus on the screen but she found the entire experience utterly boring. And worse, the story did not make any sense to her. There were talks of war and leaving countries to seek refuge. Matilda wasn't much well-versed in world history so she couldn't catch on to the conversations. She leaned over to see how Kat and Sebastian were doing. Sebastian was clinging to the farther side of his seat. So was Kat. They were still avoiding each other.
Matilda noticed that Kat had no snacks. She nudged Sebastian. "Hey, why don't you offer her some of your popcorn?" She whispered.
"No." He gave her a 'what is wrong with you' look.
"Why not?"
"Why yes?"
"Because you're a gentleman? And she doesn't have anything with her." Sebastian turned and confirmed that Kat, indeed, was snack-less.
"I don't wanna give her mine." He replied like a petulant child. "You give her yours."
"Well sure, here. Tell her it's from you." Sebastian hadn't expected Matilda to just hand him her bucket of popcorn. He rolled his eyes and pushed it back in her hands.
"Ugh. Fine. But I hate you for making me do this."
"Thank you." She grinned like a child.
Sebastian turned to Kat. "Hey, you want some of this?"
Kat looked down at the popcorn then back up at Sebastian. Without saying anything, she took a handful.
"Thanks." Matilda heard her whisper, "I couldn't have any dinner and I was starving."
Sebastian chuckled a little, "Well here, take the whole thing."
"No. No. I couldn't possibly."
"I insist."
Kat leveled her gaze at him. "How about we just share?"
"I'm good with that." He took a bit of popcorn as they continued to gaze at each other.
Matilda sat back in her chair with a grin. This was going perfectly. She made the mistake of looking Alton's way and was met with his confused stare. She looked away, her good spirits dampened by his presence.
"Who is that?" Alton asked.
"No one." Matilda answered a little too quickly and a little too loudly. The last thing she needed was Alton Spencer treating Kat the way he had treated her. It would totally ruin any chance Sebastian had at finding true love. Unfortunately for Matilda, Alton picked up on her reluctance. His eyes glinted curiously in a way that spelled trouble.
"Not no one. You know her. Tell me." His Royal Highness ordered. Matilda shot daggers at him.
"Why should I do anything you say?" Matilda whispered back loudly.
"Shhhh!" Came from the back.
"Because I said so." He whispered it so plainly, as if it should have been obvious.
"Well I'm saying, buzz off. And let me watch the film."
After a pause Alton said, "I doubt you even understand it." Matilda could not deny it but she didn't care to understand.
The drama here was far more interesting.
"So this guy, Rick. He likes this lady Ilsa?" Sebastian leaned over to Matilda.
"Dunno man. I thought this was a romance movie. They keep talking about wars and papers." Matilda answered.
"They used to be together, back when Ilsa thought her husband was dead." Kat's low voice came over.
"Her husband was dead?" Sebastian asked.
"She only thought he was. She explains it later."
"Is that why he's so mad at her?"
"Yeah. It why he's bitter in general."
"You've seen this already?"
"Of course I have. It's a classic."
"You sound like my brother."
Kat chuckled.
Matilda sat back and enjoyed the low hushed tones of their conversation. Kat walked Sebastian through the entire plot and he avidly listened. Matilda herself couldn't be bothered to follow and soon found herself drifting off to sleep. She jolted awake when the lights came back on. Sebastian and Kat were standing and talking.
"You know at the time this movie was being made, nobody thought it would be such a hit." Kat was telling Sebastian, "And now it's a historically relevant thing. It's fascinating."
Matilda wiped the drool from her mouth and turned to find Alton Spencer looking appalled at her behavior. She made a face at him.
"Sebastian." Alton said to his brother, "Will you require a ride back?"
"Huh?" Sebastian had apparently forgotten that there were people besides Kat. From behind Kat, Matilda saw Jules roll her eyes and felt sympathetic.
"No, I have to drive Till home."
"Bas I can take the subway, the trains are still running, probably."
"You don't drive your own car?" Alton asked.
"No." She answered plainly.
"Then Sebastian will drive you." Alton commanded to Matilda's surprise. "It's not appropriate to send off a woman alone this late." He explained.
"Great. That's settled." Sebastian said. "It was nice meeting you Kat." He turned to the woman, "Very... informative. I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed the movie without you."
Kat smiled politely, "Likewise. It was fun to... explain."
An awkward pause.
"Well are we supposed to just stand here or...?" Jules complained from behind Kat.
"Sorry! Right." Kat too had forgotten that there were other people here.
They came out of their row in a line, Alton going up ahead of them. Matilda saw Kat and Jules still by their seats, arguing about something in low voices.
"Fine!" Matilda heard Kat say before she turned and stopped Sebastian. "Hey, wait."
"Hmm?"
"Um... here." She handed Sebastian a card, "It's my number. Um... call me if... you ever need to talk more about movies again. Or... maybe just watch one."
"Sure." Sebastian took the card but he didn't seem his usual flirty or enthusiastic self. They walked out of the theatre.
"She's cute." She commented.
"Yeah." Sebastian said noncommittally.
"You gonna ask her out?"
"We'll see."
