Chapter 16: Urgent Gathering

The keepers sit silently in a circle. Though no one speaks a word everyone is thinking the same thing. Every so often we glance at Alby, as if expecting him to have all the answers. But he doesn't. None of us do. Except maybe Newt.

While we sit in the stuffy Homestead, Newt is trying to get answers from the new boy while he eats. Not sure how much he will know but it's worth a try.

Finally, after what seems like hours, Newt walks in and takes a seat beside Alby. He says nothing, his face is void of expression.

"Well, what did he know?" Alby asks impatiently.

Newt lets out a breath and leans at the edge of his chair.

"His name is Gally."

We sit there absorbing the little bit of information.

"Is that all?" Zart asks quietly.

"He knows as much as we do. Nothing." Newt answers.

"Does this mean there will be more of us?" Winston says, although it's more of a statement.

Alby takes charge here and we await to take in every single word.

"My guess is yes."

'That's not very affirming.'

"What job will he have?" Ben questions.

"We will get to that later. Right now here's what we do. If we are going to be getting a newbie every month we have to be an example. Keeping ourselves busy and not dwelling on the unknown. Everyone got it?"

All heads nod in agreement and the gathering is over. As the Keepers leave Alby walks over to me and says,

"Have you found anything useful in that Maze of yours?"

'Useful?'

I think back to my notebook, full of my discoveries and tips. Things I had wanted so badly to share. Something stops me, snuffs out my desire to talk,

'The Maze is yours. Your secret. Its none of his business. Alby didn't even want you to run it.'

"No nothing useful. It's big and will take time to run through it all."

He looks at me sternly, as if it's size is my fault and walks away.

'If I had some help-'

Alby's words from before flash in my mind: "There is only a handful of us."

'If we have more help, more hands...'

A crazy and wonderful scheme begins to take shape.

'Alby would never go for it.' I think gloomly.

'He can never know. Tonight at the party is the perfect time. Time to recruit some more Runners.'

A/N
Yup Gally has made an appearance. Sorry for the short chapter but it was important. I hope you notice the slight change going on within Graham since he became a Runner.
