I Fear the Freddy
The next day, I had to go back to school.
Ugh. Mondays.
I slid into my seat in fourth period, which was my math class, next to West.
"Hey." He said, smiling. "What happened this weekend?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You didn't call to record. I thought you said we were going to record The Lab."
I facepalmed. How could I forget? "Ugh, sorry. A lot of stuff on my mind recently."
West looked at me, a concerned look on his face. "What kind of stuff keeps you from recording? You never let anything keep you from recording."
"I know."
"Did you even upload anything this weekend?"
"Yeah, I played some Survival Games."
That seemed to console him a little. "Okay. Geez, I thought you were quitting or something."
"Yeah, the subscribers have gone crazy."
"You aren't ignoring them, are you?"
"No!" I said. "God, no."
I swore when I started my YouTube that I never would. I knew what it was like to be shoved away by one of your heroes. Not going to name names, but god, did it hurt.
"Kind of sounds like you are."
"You know I would never do that."
"Yeah, but you're acting weird, Skylar." He said. "What's going on?"
"A lot of...stuff, West."
"Stuff." He said, a disbelieving look on his face.
"Yeah. Stuff." I repeated.
Thank god the class started up just then, because West couldn't question me anymore.
"Okay, everyone, today we will be working on the quadratic equation..."
I tried really hard not to fall asleep. Math class was just...awful.
There's over a million words in the English language, but I can't string them into a sentence to explain how terrible math class is.
That's when the announcement came over the loudspeaker.
"Teachers, we are going into lockdown mode, immediatley. Please follow the standard procedures. Thank you."
Our teacher, Mrs. Jackman, looked confused. "Huh. We weren't expecting the drill until next week, I guess they moved it up. Alright, everyone behind the desk, come on!"
We all moved to the corner behind the desk, which was our lockdown position for this class, and surprisingly, no one spoke a word, except for a few hushed whispers.
"What's going on?" I whispered to West.
"I don't know, but this is definitely not a drill. They don't move the drills unless there's a snow day, and it's May."
"So, what, a robbery or something?"
That happened often around our town. Somebody robbed the bank across the street, or the Laundromat, for some reason, and we all had to go into lockdown mode.
"No, I don't think so. Didn't you hear how nervous the secretary sounded over the loudspeaker? This isn't a robbery."
"Since when did you become Sherlock Holmes?" I asked, smiling a little.
"Since thirty seconds ago."
"Fair enough."
Mrs. Jackman turned off the lights, and the room went dark.
A sudden feeling of fear surrounded me. I don't like the dark. Never have.
Kind of ironic for a girl who's such a big night owl, isn't it?
Why the dark? Well, it's not really the dark itself, it's more what's in it.
I guess you can say I played one too many rounds of Five Nights At Freddy's 3.
I never told my friends. They all liked the game, and I'd never live it down if I said anything. Besides, I did like the game...
When it was light out.
Everyone was dead silent, which didn't make it much better. They didn't normally turn the lights out unless it was something for real.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
Let's try not to imagine the Springtrap jumpscares, I thought.
Too late for that. Instead, I just tried to keep myself from freaking out.
It's not real. Why do I always freak out? It's just a game. It's just a game. Stop being a wimp. Puppies. Rainbows. Jensen Ackles. ANYTHING THAT WILL GET THIS IMAGE OUT OF MY HEAD.
"You okay?" West whispered.
"Yeah. Why?"
"You went all tense there for a second."
"I'm fine."
I wasn't fine. My knees were getting stiff, I felt terrified, and I could swear that I could see an outline of an animatronic, but that's just what happens when I get freaked out. My mind likes to play tricks on me.
After twenty whole minutes of this, the lights finally flipped on, and I could breathe again.
"The lockdown is now over. Please resume normal classes."
"I wonder what happened." West thought aloud.
"Yeah." I said. "I wonder."
I knew it was stupid, but all of a sudden, my gut was telling me that it had something to do with Adam.
