A Day Well Spent (Pt. 2)
Yoongi walked over and separated the photographs and newspaper articles with his foot. He rolled his sleeve over his fingers before picking some up.
"Oh my God..." Yoongi went quiet.
"What is it hyung?" Jungkook got closer so he could see.
"Guys, do you remember the documentary about this?" Yoongi asked the others. They all stared at the newspaper articles. The articles were all dated back to the early 1900's, meaning they were originals.
Bank Valley Killer Strikes Again!
Revenge After Bank Valley Serial Killer Kills Brothers. One Survivor!
House In Flames After Bank Valley Serial Killer Murders Family!
There were probably 10 different articles with similar titles.
"That's how we knew the town! I thought we heard it on the news once, but couldn't remember why. It wasn't the news it was the murder documentary we watched!" Jungkook couldn't believe he didn't remember before.
Yoongi flipped to another article.
Bank Valley Killer Faces Death Row!
And another article.
Man Murders Family. Claims Bank Valley Serial Killer Possessed Him To Do It!
Namjoon swallowed nervously and looked at Jungkook, who looked increasingly upset.
"Wait. Is this related to that documentary about that guy who killed his brothers and said he had no memory of it? Didn't he claim to be possessed by a demon when setting their house on fire?" Jin somewhat remembered them watching something like that.
"Yeah! He said he would see a ghost all the time that would make him angry. He said something like he needed to seek justice for his brother? Or someone's brother. Something about killing a brother, I don't really remember all the details. The killer killed like eight families and got the death penalty. Then a guy said he was possessed by the killer. People are insane." Yoongi found the entire situation quite bizarre.
Namjoon noticed Jungkook staring at the floor, silently crying.
"What's wrong?" Namjoon asked the youngest.
"This...this is the house. All the murdered families lived in this house." He was staring at photos on the ground.
Yoongi rubbed Jungkook's back. "Why on earth would you think tha-" he stopped when he realized all the photos across the floor were photos of each family. And just like Jungkook said, each family was standing in front of this very house.
Namjoon wanted to throw up. Were him and Jungkook both seeing a literal ghost of some old serial killer?! There was no way. His whole chest began to hurt when he realized the man in one article claimed to be possessed when killing his family. He hadn't believed in possession before this trip but now he realized he was experiencing the exact same thing as the guy in the article. It wasn't going to happen again though, right? He already made the thing leave!
"How is this the house? That makes no sense. One article says the entire house went up in flames. This house wouldn't be here if that happened." Jin couldn't tell if he was trying to reassure the others or himself.
"I don't think this is the original house. They rebuilt this one. Which explains why the basement door ended up in a pantry. So this basement must've survived the fire. Damn this is freaky as shit!" Yoongi couldn't deny it.
Jin tried to add comedic relief to the situation. "So, anyone feel possessed by a killer lately?"
Namjoon was frozen while Jungkook was still in tears.
"Do any of the articles say how they killed the serial killer dude?" Jin was curious.
Yoongi flipped through articles until he found it. "They put him in a wooden box and set it on fire. Damn. "
Yoongi noticed Jungkook and Namjoon were both dead silent. He threw everything back on the floor and grabbed each of their arms. "Alright, that's enough basement exploration. Let's go. Jungkook I get it's sad but it happened over a hundred years ago. There's no ghosts and no more killer. Nothing to be afraid of okay?"
Jungkook didn't know how to explain that wasn't why he was crying. He felt the same sadness he felt when they first arrived at this house. It was deeper than feeling bad for the families, he felt like he was sharing in the grief itself. Like the house was trying to show him how bad it actually had been. Yoongi led everyone back upstairs and shut the basement and pantry door behind him.
Everyone saw Jungkook crying.
Taehyung ran to his side. " What's wrong? Why is he crying? What happened to him?" Taehyung looked directly at his leader. Maybe Taehyung's trust wasn't completely back yet.
"Nothing. I'm fine." Jungkook tried to sound convincing. Yoongi explained what they had found in the basement, and everyone was shocked to discover what house they were in.
As if Hobi wasn't freaked out enough, this made it worse for him. "Alright so who is going to be my bathroom buddy? And my hallway buddy? And my kitchen buddy? And living room buddy?" This got a chuckle out of the other members, even Jungkook.
"Hey Kookie you know what you need? Some fresh air. Can we please go swimming now guys?!" Hobi had been waiting way longer than what he thought would just be half an hour.
"Yes! Please let's swim!" There were three things that always helped Namjoon clear his mind and those were reading, bicycling, and swimming. He was ready to go have fun in the water with his friends and forget about the entire situation.
Everyone changed into a pair of spare clothes, nobody had brought a bathing suit because nobody thought there'd be water.
They all headed outside. The lake was larger than expected. They could see some of it out of the kitchen window, but only the part that had a small wooden dock attached.
Outside, however, the lake practically looked like the ocean. The members could barely see to the other side, and there were small waves. Hobi was beyond excited. "This must connect to the ocean, it's salt water." Jin could smell it the closer they got to the water. Members could head to the end of the dock and jump in the water, or they could walk over to a little opening that led to a small rock platform with shallow water and tip-toe in there.
Yoongi stuck to his word and planned to hang out on the dock with Jungkook. It was low enough to the water to dip their feet in if they wanted.
Jungkook stepped onto the dock and was beginning to walk to the end of it when Jimin grabbed him. "Wait. It could be rotted. Let me go first."
Before Jimin could even step forward, Hobi ran past him.
"Last one in is a rotten egg!" Hobi jumped right into the water, followed by Taehyung and Namjoon.
"Well, the dock is safe." Jimin laughed as he ran and jumped off the dock.
Yoongi and Jungkook were hysterical over how badly their members were at diving into water. They both walked to the end of the dock and sat down.
They were quiet for a while , watching the others splash and play with eachother. Jungkook decided to start his own entertainment. He ran back to the yard and pulled out weeds, and ran back to Yoongi.
"What are you doing with that?"
"This."
Jungkook shoved the weed up his hyungs nose. "Ahh Jungkook-ahh!" Yoongi couldn't help but laugh. He loved how innocently playful Jungkook was.
Taehyung swam over to them. "Hey guys, watch this!" He went underwater for a few seconds and then his legs were straight up in the air. It looked like he was doing some weird form of underwater handstand. He came back up. "What do you think?"
"Terrible form." Yoongi and Jungkook said it at the exact same time and burst out laughing.
"Yeah well I'd like to see you try, Jungkook!" Taehyung yelled jokingly.
Jungkook started kicking his feet in the water, splashing Taehyung in the face making him swim away. Jungkook saw how much fun everyone was having in the water and felt bad that Yoongi had chosen to stay with him instead. "You can swim too, I'm fine."
"Nah it's okay. I enjoy hanging out up here just as much."
"Hyung?"
"Yeah?"
"Can you try teaching me how to swim again?"
Yoongi was a little shocked by the request. They've tried teaching him to swim before but it never worked out, he would always panic which is why none of them ever force him to learn or try.
"Right now? Here? You hate swimming without a life vest or floatie. We've tried to teach you before and it hasn't worked out, you always panic. Realistically, what would be different this time? I don't want to put you through that."
"I don't know. It looks fun and I'm feeling confident right now. Maybe this is the day I'll finally be able to do it?"
"I can try. The second you panic it's over though and we're sitting right back here on this dock."
"Fair enough. Guys! I'm going to learn to swim!" Jungkook yelled out to the members who were swimming.
Everyone looked at him confused.
Namjoon looked up into the sky. "Are pigs finally flying?"
Everyone started laughing.
Yoongi grabbed his maknae's hand and led him to the shallow entrance of the river. The other members swam over to meet them there.
"It gets really deep right about here so don't come out this far," Jin said as they got closer.
"Maknae we've done this before. You hate trying to learn and you know that." Jimin was trying to be realistic.
"Maybe today will be different." Jungkook truly was feeling confident. All the members were now on their feet next to Jungkook, and Yoongi was holding both his hands guiding him into the water.
"You two are so cute. It's like a father teaching his son to swim." Taehyung smiled.
Yoongi led Jungkook into the water, when they were about waste deep he began to explain what to do. He leaned back and tried to show Jungkook how to tread or float. He figured he should start there before the actual swimming part.
All the members were surrounding their maknae for moral support, Jimin was even rubbing his back. "See how Yoongi hyung is kicking his legs and moving his arms? That's all you have to do," Jimin explained.
Yoongi grabbed Jungkook's hands again and started leading him deeper into the water. Jungkook's panic usually always started as soon as the water got up to his chest or neck, it made him feel like he was choking and that's when he would always decide to get out. The water was now at Jungkook's chest.
"Isn't this far enough?" Jungkook asked his hyung.
"No, you have to not reach the bottom before you start treading," Yoongi explained.
"If I can't reach the bottom I'm going to drown."
"There's six of us surrounding you. You seriously think we'd let that happen?" Namjoon was trying to be reassuring.
"You wanted me to teach you. If you don't want to learn, we can get out." Yoongi wasn't trying to be mean, but he didn't want to get to the point of Jungkook panicking either. One time he panicked so badly he almost DID drown. "Do you trust me or not?"
"I trust you."
Yoongi pulled him deeper into the water, and it was now at Jungkooks neck. Yoongi felt his grip get tighter. "You're okay. I promise"
Jungkook turned around, all his members were still right there behind him.
He sucked in a deep breath. "I'm okay," he exhaled. This was actually the longest he'd ever been in the water while trying to learn to swim, and the deepest he's ever gone in without a vest. His members started cheering praises at him.
Yoongi pulled him deeper into the water, and now Jungkook realized he actually couldn't reach the bottom. "Hyung! Hyung I can't reach it!" he clung his arms around his hyungs neck.
"You're fine!" Jin yelled.
He was still clinging to Yoongi, who was holding him up so his head was still above the water. "You're doing fine. We're deep enough now. Remember how I showed you to tread the water? Try to do it yourself."
"Please don't let go of me!"
"Well how are you supposed to learn if I hold you the entire time?"
"I don't know." Jungkook could feel the panic rising in him that he was all too familiar with.
"Listen to me. I'm going to hold your arms while you practice with your legs. Then I'm going to let you go and you're going to do what I showed you and you'll be fine. You won't drown. If you go under we're all right here to get you."
Jungkook let Yoongi take him by his arms and he began to tread with his legs. He was actually doing a pretty decent job.
"There you go kookie!" Jimin yelled.
The members were clapping, which was boosting Jungkook's confidence.
"Okay good. Are you ready for me to let go? Nothing bad will happen to you."
"I guess..."
Yoongi counted to three and let Jungkook completely go. Jungkook wasn't as ready as he thought he was.
