Chapter 45
Achilles POV
I watched as my mother held Diana's hand. She didn't even look as though she were afraid, instead she looked to be full of sadness. Moving up to her head I watched as Hector took her other hand. It was as though he feared more for her than himself. Paris couldn't watch and took the children to the corner of the room.
"Diana? I'm sorry I couldn't protect you or our child. I never wish to be separated from you for you must know how much I love you." Hector said as he bent down and kissed her.
"I do not blame you at all, today I was going to give my hand to you with all my heart. Even though I am not here though remember in our hearts we will never be apart." She spoke so kind to Hector and tried her best to smile for him.
"I will go fetch a healer, maybe there is something to be done." Hector spoke quickly as he ran to find a healer.
Closing my eyes, I tried to fight off my own emotions when I felt a soft hand upon my cheek. Opening my eyes, I looked down and saw Diana with her hand on my cheek. Leaning into her touch I watched as he painless face disappeared, and I could see the pain she was suffering. I didn't know what to do though.
"She shows her true pain to you, she can depend on you." Mother smiles as she looks at me.
"Achilles, please watch after Alec and Livitica even though I know you hate Hector. Please promise me you will do this for me." Diana speaks her concern for the children to me.
"Yes, I swear to you Diana I will do as you ask." I nod as I hold her hand to my cheek.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would fall into the past and fall in love with two great men. I thank god for the time I had here." She says as she grimaces with pain. "Goodbye Achilles, keep your promise."
Meg shook her head as she sat down beside Diana. She couldn't stand to see her sister in such a way.
"Di, no you can't do this to me. What will happen now?" Meg questions as she looks down at her sister.
"She will return to your time and you will stay here until your life here has been lived, then you will return to her." My mother tells Meg reassuring her that she will see Diana again.
"That's comforting but I will miss you so much." Meg speaks quickly as she begins to cry.
Hector returns with the healers and after taking a long time examining her they come to the same conclusion as my mother. She is dying. All of us are at her side, the children even said their tearful goodbye as Diana smiled and hid her pain away from them. Alec refused to leave her side though, so he stayed by me as we all just sat and waited.
"Diana? My love speak to me?" Hector spoke out after close to an hour of silence.
Taking Diana's hand, he began to sob as he realized her soul was no longer there. Unlike the rest of us, tonight Hector had lost two souls. That of Diana and his unborn child. No man should ever have to suffer through that. Meg cried as she ran from the room, no longer able to take the pain. Hector grabbed Diana's body and held her close to him. Keeping my calm, the best I could I watched as he began to beg every god that he could think of to bring her back. None of them answered his plea. Laying her back down, Alec went and hugged his mother tightly. It was a long hug and one that he needed. Returning to my side he looked up at me with tears in his eyes. His eyes which he shared with his mother.
"She is at peace, you will see her again one day." My mother says as she walks to her grandson and holds him in her arms. "Now she watches you from the sky."
The others beside Hector and myself leave and we sit with her. It wouldn't be until tomorrow when everything was announced to the people.
"What did she have you promise this time?" Hector questions me.
"To watch the children, I agreed, and I will do all that I can." I state as I look over at him. "You?"
"To allow you to help with them as well as remarry, I do not think I can do the last. This is all too much to bare." He says with a sigh as he gently picks up Diana's body. "I will take her to the healing room, there you can say goodbye then I will let the healers start their work."
Nodding, I follow Hector. In this case he was mourning just as much or even more than I. Placing her down upon that marble slab was probably one of the hardest things Hector ever had to do and yet here he was doing it again. Walking past me with a nod he leaves the room and shuts the door behind him.
Walking up to her I caressed her cheek, this was it. This is the last time I would be able to feel what little warmth was upon her skin. Never would she lay in my bed again, smile at me, correct me or anything she used to do. Kneeling before the slab even I call out to the gods to beg for her return only to have the same answer as Hector.
"Diana...I love you...I will miss you, but I will always remember you. I will keep my promise, Alec will grow to be strong and wise and Livitica will grow to be just like you. Stubborn and wise. Forgive me for not keeping you or the baby safe. May the gods see you rest peacefully until I see you again." I tell her as I kiss her forehead and then quickly leave just as the healers come into the room.
Never would I unseen that image. Diana's once white and beautiful dress not stained with the blood of not only her own but her child's. Slamming my fist into a nearby wall I crumble as I let the tears fall. I will only be able to see her in my dreams now. Hearing another sob, I looked to the healing room doors, there stood the young princess. She was begging the healers to bring her mother back. Looking my way, she catches me looking at her. Cautiously she walks up to me and hands me a small piece of material.
"What is that young princess?" I ask trying to be nice.
"For your tears, did you know my mommy?" she asks with such innocence.
"I did, even before you were born. You don't know me, do you?" I ask her quietly.
"You are Alec's daddy, Achilles, he has told me many stories of you and mommy. You miss her too?" the princess asks as he tears as pushes aside by her hand.
"I do...very much so."
"She told me I would grow up like her...do you think I can be like her?" she asks and with a familiar gleam in her eye I can't help but grin.
"Something tells me you can."
Two days has passed, the new kingdom knew of the young queen's death. Hector took her as his wife anyway and now she was being prepared for a royal burial. None guarded Alec and the princess other than me. I didn't want to stay but I had to keep my promise to Diana. We waited the two days to make sure she wouldn't come back again this time. No such luck, still she lay upon the slab. I still disliked Hector and the only reason I was here was for my son and the new princess who followed us around.
"When will we see momma for the last time papa?" Alec asked as both her and the princes stared me down.
"Tomorrow, then we shall give her a proper burial. Livitica where is your father?" I ask since I hadn't seen his royal pain in a long time.
"He refuses to come out of his room, I have not seen his since last morning." Livitica answers with a sigh.
"He has taken her death hard, we all have. Time is all that will heal this if anything at all."
Hector's POV
I failed her again, I knew that something would happen and I tried to prepare for it. Still I lost her. Standing from my bed I hear a knock on my door. Still not wanting to deal with anyone, I want to ignore it but instead I go to the door and see Paris standing before me. In his hands he seems to have something.
"Brother, this was brought to the gates. No one knows who left it but I think you would want to see it." Paris says as he hands it over.
Opening the covering I am shocked by what is inside. There carefully preserved is a portrait of Diana. Her hair down and a crown upon her head as she looks up to the sky. Looking back up to Paris I see him shrug unsure who the artist is.
"They manage to capture much of her likeness in it, now you shall always have a piece of her with you." Paris said quietly as he turned and took his leave.
Walking back to the desk I sat the portrait down. Taking a deep breath I knew that Diana wouldn't want me to be like this. I would have to bury her as I did my wife before her but this time, it hurts much worse. Dressing myself in royal robes I make my way to the healing room. The doors open for me and there upon the marble lays the only woman I have ever loved in my life. Diana. Dressed in a long white dress, her long red hair rests upon the marble behind her head and a crown place upon her. She looks peaceful as though she were just sleeping.
"My king, the time has come." A healer says with a bow to me.
Nodding my head I watch as the healers then take her from the marble slab and leave the room. Following them to the throne room I see a circle of flowers around the slab where Diana would be to be viewed. Taking a deep breath I watch them healers carefully as they lay her down upon the slab. Going to her side I watch as the only female healer we have, gently places a small bunch of flowers in Diana's hand. Those were the last of the flowers that were used on our wedding day. How they stayed alive amazed me. Turning and taking my place at the throne I make a motion to the guard allowing them to open the doors.
Once the doors were opened, Paris and the children were the first to enter. Alec stood tall and strong and held Livitica's hand the entire time. Behind them I saw Achilles watching over the children carefully. Paris and the children tell Diana their goodbyes and pass to stand beside me. Achilles can't bare to look upon her again and goes to the far side of the thrones and stand still. He had to keep his promise to watch over the children for Diana.
The day was long as the people of the kingdom came and said goodbye to Diana. Many of them may not have even known her yet they all came and bowed out of respect. Those who seemed to know her or about her brought flowers and added them to the collection.
Once the viewing was over and the prayers were said a marble casket came forward. Achilles went forward and watched as the healers carefully picked up her body and placed it inside. Bending down before the casket Achilles leaned in and kissed Diana's cheek one last time. He quickly then went to his son's side. Also bending down beside her casket, I gently kiss her lips one last time before quickly kissing her forehead as well.
Going back to my daughter we watch as the healers place the heavy lid upon the casket. Four of the strongest guards then came and lifted the casket. Paris lead them to a vault deep under ground where only royals were kept through out the end of their time. Torch in hand he led them down and lit the torches in the room where there was only one space open. Just for Diana. Placing her inside, the guards sealed her body inside of the vault. That was the end of her life in Troy.
