Chapter 13: The Sunset

My eyes flutter open to light shining through my living room window. Ugh. Light. What an awful thing.

I stretch, and I then realize that someone's arms are around me.

What the hell..? Who's holding me?

I look at the mystery person, and I find out that Dan is the one that's holding me. He seems to be asleep, for his eyes are closed and his chest rises and falls in a steady pattern.

At first I'm confused. Why is Dan laying next to me on my couch?

But then the memories of a couple hours ago come flooding back. I blush a bit, thinking about the kiss we shared. It was nice. But, we didn't really address it once it was over. So, are we gonna go on a date? Are we gonna act like it never happened?

I let out a sigh and lay my head on Dan's chest. Hopefully he addresses it, because I don't wanna do it and have him think that I'm over-analyzing everything when it was just a fluke thing that happened.

I then feel movement from beneath me. I sit up and look up at him. He's awake. He's smiling down at me as he says, "'Morning, beautiful."

I smile to myself as my cheeks turn pink. "'Morning, Dan," I say with an awkward giggle.

Dan stretches as he says in a groggy tone, "So...I had a thought last night."

Ah. Now we're getting somewhere. "What was this thought?" I ask, thinking that he's gonna talk about the kiss.

"I really seemed to calm you down last night. So, since you're probably still not too keen on being alone, how would you like it if I spend the entirety of today with you?" Dan asks. "Arin can come over too. We've got enough videos stockpiled. We can skip a day."

Well, I guess I was wrong. But the idea of Dan and Arin hanging out with me all day makes happiness swell inside of me. I can't help the goofy smile that spreads across my face as I say, "You're always filled with the greatest ideas, Daniel. I'd like that very much."

Dan smiles, which makes my heart flutter. His smile is already adorable enough through a screen, but when it's in real life, it's almost too much for me to handle. "Cool. I'll call Arin now."

Dan then pulls out his phone that was in his pajama pants' pocket and dials Arin's number. He puts the chubby boyo on speaker and smiles in anticipation.

Arin picks up on the second ring. "Hey Dan! Excited for the Grump session today. What's up?"

"Yeah... About the session, Arin," Dan begins. "(Y/N) had a really bad nightmare last night, so she called me and asked if I could go to her place and comfort her. I ended up staying the night, and I thought it'd be cool if we both stayed with her today. Supported her, ya know? Give her food, watch some shows, play some games, whatever we feel like. It'll be a really chill day. So, you in?"

Arin laughs a bit. "What kind of question is that? Of course I'm in! Happy to chill with the two coolest people of all!"

Dan smiles at me and flashes me a thumbs up.

I smile back, loving Arin's enthusiasm and Dan's cuteness.

"Cool! So, do you wanna just come now? We're both up," Dan says to Arin.

"Hell yeah! Can you just send me (Y/N)'s address again?" Arin asks.

"Sure can. I'll see you in a bit, Arin!" Dan says happily.

"See you!" Arin exclaims as he hangs up.

Dan looks at me, and I immediately know what the look means.

"My address is (your address)," I say with a laugh.

"Ah. Thank you~!" Dan responds in a sing-song voice as he types it out on his phone and sends it to Arin.

We then wait for Arin to come, passing the time with dirty jokes and video game talk.

After about ten minutes of waiting, someone knocks on my front door.

I enthusiastically fly off my couch and skip over to the door. I open it in a flash, and the one and only Arin Hanson is standing on my porch. I smile, realizing that I had missed him more than I thought.

Without saying anything, Arin wraps his arms around me in a warm, loving hug. "We're here for you, (Y/N)."

"I know, Arin," I say, hugging him back. "Thank you."

After a bit, we pull apart, and I step aside so that Arin can come in. "Welcome to my humble abode, Egoraptor."

Arin giggles a bit and walks in, looking around. "Hm! Nice place!" he says. He then sees Dan on my couch and smiles. "Hi, Dan."

"Hey, man," Dan says with a smile and a wave.

Arin's smile is unchanging as he guides me to my couch as he sits me down on it. It's like he owns the place. "What do you want? Food, hugs, TV? Tell us, and we'll make it happen." He gestured to him and Dan.

Dan nods, looking at me with a smile not unlike Arin's.

"I wanna play a game with ya'll," I say, gesturing to my Wii. I've always wanted to play a game with the Grumps. Arin's rage would be hilarious to witness in person. "I've got 'Super Smash Bros.', 'Mario Party 9'—"

I'm about to name more games when Arin cuts me off. "OH HELL YEAH! LET'S PLAY 'MARIO PARTY 9'! I HAVEN'T PLAYED THAT GAME IN SO LONG!"

"YES! WE ARE SO PLAYING THAT!" Dan adds enthusiastically.

I laugh at the aggressive enthusiasm of my two boys. I then get off the couch, walk over to the Wii, and put the game in.

Time to crush the legendary Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan.

I wave as I watch Arin drive away from my house in his car. He had to leave early for reasons that he refused to tell Dan and I. However, I feel like Dan knew, because he and Arin kept exchanging knowing glances. Dan had also pulled him aside to talk to him privately, so that was a bit suspicious. I had ignored the want to prod, though, because I didn't wanna invade Arin's privacy.

"Hey, uh, can I suggest something?" I hear Dan say from next to me.

"Yeah, sure," I respond, looking at Dan with a smile.

He scratches the back of his neck nervously. "Um...the sunset is really pretty today... Would you...wanna lay down and...look at it together..?" He gestures to the multicolored sky with a point.

I want to squeal at how nervous he sounded. But I don't, because that'd just be embarrassing. "Yeah!" I reply. "That sounds nice, Dan."

Dan sighs with relief, but he still looks pretty tense. A timid smile crosses his face as he awkwardly lays down on his back on my front lawn. I follow suit.

After a bit of silence, Dan says, "So...I think we need to talk about what happened last night."

It takes me a minute to process what he's referring to. And then it hits me like that bus hit Regina George in "Mean Girls". "Ah...the...kiss..?" I hesitantly ask.

Dan nods. "Yeah... If it was just a spur-of-the-moment thing to you, then that's fine... But I just wanted to let you know that it meant more than that to me." He looks away from the sunset and at my eyes.

A sigh of relief makes its way out of me as I look at his eyes also. "It...it meant more than that to me, too."

Dan smiles a bit. "So...needless to say...I..." He pauses, tugging at the collar of his shirt a little. He exhales, trying to gather up the courage to say what he wants to. He finally does, and what he says makes my heart burst with happiness, even though I already knew about what he tells me.

"I like you. More than as friends, I mean..."

Cue the dumb smile. Then, in a rare moment of confidence, I intertwine my fingers with Dan's.

A small gasp escapes Dan, not expecting such a move from a shy wallflower like me. But he returns the gesture afterwards.

"I like you too, Dan," I say, stroking his hand with my thumb.

Dan laughs breathlessly with relief. "G-good! So...do you wanna go inside? We can...have dinner or something? It could be, like...our first date..?"

I nod. "Yeah, that sounds nice..."

So we get up, go inside, and both make some chicken for us to eat together. It's really good, but we ended up getting seasoning on our shirts, since, while we cooked, we would sneak-attack each other and shake out the seasoning onto each other. But it's okay. They were just our PJs, anyway.

Before I know it, it's time for Dan to leave. "Do you want me to stay with you another night?" he offers.

But I think that I can survive the night. I collected my sanity a lot over the past day. "No, it's okay," I reply, smiling a little. "I feel a lot less insecure now. Thank you for coming."

Dan smiles back. "I was happy to do it. And we need to do this again, okay? The date, I mean..," he says awkwardly.

"Yeah, we do need to," I say.

We both stare at each other for a moment. Then, Dan hesitantly wraps his arms around me (he has to bend down a little, though).

I hug him back. "Take care, Dan. I hope to see you soon."

"Me too," Dan says into my shoulder.

We pull apart, and with one final wave to me, Dan opens my front door and leaves, shutting it behind him.

   I smile.

My first date was a success.
