Chapter 3 Undercover Problem
When Yibo arrived at the Yiling police station at 7 am, he was speechless at the sight of the building. Cracks in the plaster of the outer walls, graffiti on windows, doors and walls. A few of the window panes are also cracked, if there are any window panes left at all.
A young man who suddenly appeared next to Yibo nudged Yibo lightly and asked him with a grin, "It's a great sight, isn't it? I guess you're the new guy expected to come today?"
"Um yeah. My name is Wang Yibo." Yibo replied, pretending to be shy.
"What did you do to make them put you in this hole? No one comes here voluntarily, after all."
"Um I don't know. Maybe they just didn't like me."
"Really? Well, if they put you in here, they probably hated you more. A tip from me, always keep your head down. You see nothing, hear nothing and know nothing. Believe me, it's better if you stick to it."
"Why is that?"
"You'll find out soon enough. And now you'd better hurry up. You don't want to attract attention on your first day by not being on time."
"No, of course not." Yibo replied and continued walking toward the police station. He hadn't even entered the building yet and already received an advisory that alerted him. He straightened his new uniform and entered the building.
A stench of alcohol, urine and something Yibo could not define awaited him as soon as he entered the building. The registration desk was empty and the door to the security area was also unguarded. Already two gross security violations in not even five minutes. Yibo was truly amazed.
He searched for the captain's office, knocked on his door and waited. When suddenly the door opened and an angry man yelled at him, "Why do you knock and then not come in?"
Yibo literally flinched, because at that moment he was really startled. "Um, good morning. Sorry sir, I didn't want to be impolite and just open the door."
"I see, and what do you want? Are you the new guy?"
"Yes sir. I'm Wang Yibo and as of today, I'm assigned to your police department."
"Mhhh, alright. See that guy over there? That long guy with his plaid shirt? That's who you need to go to. He's your new team leader as of today." Yibo nodded. The next moment, the captain called the guy over to him personally. "Miles, over here."
Miles, Yibo didn't know if it was the first or last name, came up to them cursing and asked sullenly, "What now?"
"Commissioner Miles, this is Wang Yibo and I'm transferring him to your team as of today. He's fresh out of the police academy." Explained the captain.
"Oh please. What am I supposed to do with an inexperienced baby? I need experienced men, not little boys just being weaned from mommy's breast." Scolded Commissioner Miles.
"You wanted extra manpower for your team, that's all we're getting, so deal with it."
"Sir, this is just a kid. What am I supposed to do with him?"
"Team 1 and 2 didn't complain either. And they even got two freshmen each last year. And they've done well here, haven't they? So pull yourself together and stop complaining."
"Don't think I'm going to accept this. You know I need someone with experience."
"I don't care. He was assigned to us, so give it a rest." Replied the captain and closed his door. Even though Yibo is only supposed to be working undercover here, he felt really insulted and was disgusted at how they were talking about him and even in his presence.
Miles went back to his team and his desk, kicked a wastebasket and yelled, "I don't believe it. There they go sending us a guy who's still green behind the ears."
"You stupid asshole, if you only knew." Yibo muttered and walked over to Miles where he was shown his desk.
His new desk, is actually just an old shaky very simple table, apparently used mostly for storage. On it, in addition to lots of junk and unsorted documents, is an old computer and a telephone, the likes of which, as far as Yibo knew, hasn't been produced since 20 years ago.
"My first instruction to you. Clean up your workspace and sort the papers. Don we will give more papers later, you had to sort them all. When you have everything sorted, transfer it all into the computer." Shouted Miles.
Yibo gritted his teeth tightly and replied, "Yes, sir. Got it."
And while Yibo went about his work, his team, with him making six of them, left the department, leaving him behind. Yibo hated this part of his job and always called it the undercover problem. He had to pretend to be more stupid than he is and always put up with everything from others just to avoid being exposed.
None of the other police officers were interested in him. Nobody looked at him, nobody greeted him. As if he were just air. And yet, all the time, he had the feeling that everyone was watching him. Everyone seemed to be staring at him and every glance made Yibo feel more and more uncomfortable. Something he had never felt like this before.
At lunch time, the other two teams had gone out to eat. Team 3, his team, was not back yet. The guy from this morning came over to Yibo, sat down next to him, and said, "Tomorrow you'd better leave the uniform at home and wear simple clothes."
"Mhm, I've already noticed that no one here wears the uniform." Replied Yibo calmly.
"It makes them too noticeable when they are out in the streets. And no one demands a proper duty uniform. Oh yeah, your new team leader is an asshole. I know that because he's my dad. I'm Don Miles, by the way."
"Oh, I see."
"Yeah, I know, unbelievable that my dad already has an adult son right? Well, I'm not a cop like him or you. I just help out here with all the office stuff from time to time. I'll bring you the paperwork in a minute. But don't get a shock. There are so many, it'll take you all week."
"Oh, that's crazy."
"Don't worry about it. My dad won't be letting you go with him for the next few days anyway. So it's good for you to have something to do here, right?"
"Yeah, probably."
"All right, I'll let you get on with it then. I'll be right back with the papers."
"All right." Replied Yibo.
When Don Miles returned a moment later, he had a serving cart with him and it was packed with all sorts of loose papers and unsorted files. Yibo gulped when he saw this. This bad, he hadn't imagined. " What the hell is this?" He asked in shock.
"I told you, don't be too shocked. I'll leave you the trolley here. Your table is going to collapse otherwise. Oh yeah, the computer doesn't work anymore. I'll bring you a laptop later."
"Mhm, thanks." Said Yibo, just staring at the huge stack of papers.
To maintain his cover, Yibo had no choice but to do as he was asked. Don brought him a new laptop, which Yibo also had to set up first, and then he gradually began to transfer all the data and sort the documents.
He hadn't even finished a quarter of the work when Team 3 came back, declared that it was closing time and Yibo could go home. Although it is only his first day of undercover work, he already fears that it will be very difficult to get information that will expose the Yiling police department.
Arriving at his new accommodation, an apartment in a police dormitory, he was greeted by his two new roommates with a home-cooked meal. Much to his delight, he also has his own room, as his two roommates share one room and the other is unoccupied.
However, before Yibo ate with his two roommates who work in a different police station, he wanted to take a quick shower and change clothes. He hoped that his dad was right and that this time Amal packed him appropriate clothes that would also fit him.
Because unfortunately Yibo, had missed Amal in the last few days again and again. And this early morning, he only had time to quickly get the two suitcases and then had to go immediately.
When Yibo unpacked his suitcases and saw what Amal had prepared for him, he cursed. He picked up his cell phone and called his dad. "Dad, you have to fire Amal." He said angrily when he saw the baby blue and pink shirts.
"Why?" Asked his dad confused.
"This punk packed me clothes that just scream:: 'Hello I'm gay. Imagine pink shirts and baby blue shirts. White sweat pants and light blue jeans. I can't fucking walk around like this!"
"Yibo, then there's only one thing left for you to do. You'll have to buy some clothes yourself. Save the bills and then we'll settle it when you get back."
"Yeah, because I'm definitely not walking around like this." Scolded Yibo and ended the conversation without saying goodbye.
Because he didn't have any other clothes with him, he put on a white shirt and the light blue jeans. When he left his room, his two new roommates stared at him with wide eyes. "Oh haha. My sister and I have the same suitcases. She left this morning because she's going to study abroad. Apparently we switched our suitcases. I'm actually having to go out and buy some new clothes later."
"I see, there's a fashion store around the corner. And if you don't like anything there, there's the next one two blocks away. We can show you later. But for now, come and eat with us." Said Shiyan, one of his roommates.
Yong, the other, nodded and explained, "We can also lend you something from us first. Then you won't have to go out in those girl's trousers later."
"That would be really great." Replied Yibo. He was glad that the two apparently believed him in this lie. Or at least wanted to believe it.
After dinner, the three of them set out and visited a total of 5 fashion stores before Yibo was satisfied and had bought a whole bunch of new clothes that fit him. Preferably black and tight fitting.
Later when the three were back at the apartment, the two told about their police station. It is only very small and most of the police officers there are older, but very nice and share their experience with the two.
Yibo then told them about his first day at his police station and the two were horrified. Especially because Yibo is now a part of the infamous police department that there are so many rumors about.
Then, as Yibo lay in his bed after four beers with his roommates, he wondered what else was in store for him? This was only the first day and already, Yibo found it damn hard. Not only because he was ignored by everyone, except Don. But also because he has no idea how to get the information he needs when he can't get close to anyone.
Although he could watch the teams from his desk, he didn't assume that any bribes were being handed out there for all to see. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day, Yibo thought, closing his eyes and falling asleep.
A/N: From the coming chapter, it will mostly continue with the POV of Yibo. He will tell, as a kind of report, about his investigation.
