Road-trip -Chapter 9

Kyle managed to fully escape the parking garage of Charles Barkley High School, and successfully drives away from the overrun school campus and decided to avoid the main streets of the city.

But even so, Nova city wasn't a small city with a population of 275,000 people.

So Kyle stopped the car on a abandoned street and he and Logan had made the decision to go through the suburban areas of the city. As from where they were they can hear the sounds of gunshots and explosions coming from the city. But for Logan he can hear more than that; he can hear cars speeding down streets, sirens, and the cries and screams of people fleeing for their lives from the walking corpses chasing them.

And that wasn't safe for them or more specifically: the city wasn't safe for Kyle. So as the closer the brothers got to the suburbs, the more wreckage they have seen.

There was crashed and abandoned vehicles littering the streets and the grass off the roads, as well as blood. Lots of blood and torn body parts were scattered across the streets and even the buildings on both sides of the road, which is mostly houses with a few small stones and restaurants.

Most of those buildings were undamaged but where abandoned of all life. But other buildings were destroyed in the outbreak of the zombie attack and there was zombies seen in the buildings or on the lawn.

At the sound of the pickup truck's engine, it caught the zombies attention so they turned to start running after the truck. There was debris littering the road from paperwork and bags to food and toys, and at the same time Kyle kept checking up on Logan in the back as they drove down the street, seeing the destruction of Nova City.

Nearly every other street is full of zombies and abandoned cars as the sun begins to set, casting the city in a warm orange glow as monsters that where once humans roam the city streets and their growing numbers begins to overwhelm the city's population.

Kyle continues to drive down the streets seeing more and more zombies of various ages are seen. Because of the time of day, when the outbreak hit the city, most of the kids and teens were in their respective schools and most of the other schools don't have fences and gates surrounding the property so among the streets were zombies ranging from toddlers to 8th graders who were eating other fallen survivors or joined in the horde that was chasing the pickup truck.

After crossing over a bridge and taking a sudden right turn as there was a overturned and flaming bus blocking most of the road, the Bennetts' managed to loose the zombies before Kyle took a left and turned onto a familiar street.

The street was familiar but also it looked unfamiliar because it was trashed as well; it was destroyed but at least it was empty of zombies. At the moment.

Kyle had to make a wide turn as there was a white limousine that was covered in blood and had crashed the front windows of a once popular coffee shop.
The coffee shop left a bittersweet taste in the brothers mouth as it their mother's favorite place to get her coffee and to relax.

Their dad hates coffee, but he still buys it for his wife.

The brothers didn't notice that they both had the same bittersweet smile as they thought of their parents. But after driving past their mom's coffee shop, Kyle had reached their neighborhood and this time the whole block was its same normal appearance like it was that morning, but this time it was devoid of any people.

There was no crashed cars or pools of blood, and there was no fires or other zombies where seen in sight. As Kyle was driving down the street, he kept his eyes peeled for anything dangerous, but there was nothing in sight.

Soon Kyle pulls up to Mrs Greene's house, and both hop out of the vehicle with their weapons and Kyle takes the truck's keys.

Before entering the house, Kyle pulls out his phone to see it down at 25% and looks at the time; 6:12 pm.

Logan told Kyle they should hurry because he can hear their baby sister, upstairs in one of the bedrooms, but he can also hear a zombie downstairs. The brothers moved towards the front door as Logan broke the door open, before crouching down and entering the foyer.

Kyle was right behind them, when they both heard a horsed groan from the back of the house, falling also the sounds of things banging around could be heard. Soon footsteps were heard, followed by groaning and the sound of something dragging on the ground.

Then entering the kitchen and dining room was a older woman who was a zombie. The woman is wearing a black knee length skirt with a white shirt and a white cardigan with a hood.

The zombie was Mrs Greene. And tied to her right leg is a grey curtain with the end of it is tied to a medium safe that was dragging on the ground. Logan asked Kyle to get Taylor from upstairs, but before Kyle can say anything, the brothers and the zombie heard Taylor crying.

The zombie growled and tried to run for the brothers, so Kyle ran up the stairs as Logan deals with the zombie in the kitchen.

Upstairs, Kyle ran for the bedroom the crying was coming from and had to break the locked door down.

There was Taylor; laying in the center of the bed surrounded by pillows. Kyle saw nothing in the room, so he rushed to the bed and picked up his sister.

"Shhh Taylor, shhh. It's alright, I'm here, I'm here." Kyle hugged and managed to calm down his sister to get her to stop crying and she begins to look up at Kyle.

Kyle and Logan Bennett had their mother's brown hair and their father's hazel green eyes and tanned skin. Taylor Bennett, has their mother's blue eyes and pale skin and their father's light blonde hair.

Because of the warm weather, Taylor was simply wearing a short sleeve white dress. Kyle looks around and spots Taylor's diaper bag near the door he kicked open, so he heads towards it and picked it before putting it on the bed and gave it a quick look, mostly everything was there except for the baby bottles and formula.

Kyle almost cursed, but held his tongue because if Taylor's first words was a swear word then their parents and Logan will be on him like a pack of wolves. Kyle grabbed the bag and turned around to head downstairs to reunite with Logan when he froze up.

In the doorway was a Doberman police dog. But it was covered in blood and looked to have been eaten alive but was still standing as the dog began to growl at the Bennett siblings.

Before the dog can prepare to lounge at Kyle and Taylor, a lamp was swung in the air and crushed the Doberman's head in one blow. Kyle shielded Taylor's body to make sure no infected blood landed on her, before he turned to the doorway to see Logan with blood staining his new clothes.

Logan takes one look at Kyle and Taylor and breathed a sigh of relief as they were both safe. The Bennetts leave Mrs Greene's house as Logan explains that after he delt with Mrs Greene, that a few zombie animals showed up either because of the scent or the noise but they had to leave now.

After grabbing a small wool basket for Taylor, and Kyle informing Logan about Taylor's bottles and formula situation. But fortunately there house was down the street, so it shouldn't be a problem as their house used to belong to their maternal grandparents who are overprotective retired combat veterans so their home was like a fortress.

Kyle got in the passenger seat with Taylor in his arms as Logan was behind the truck and began to push the car down the empty street, hopefully they don't attract anymore undead animals.

"Mom. Dad. Please be okay." Kyle whispered to himself, unsure if his parents are safe in their house or are still in the city somewhere.
