Chapter 3 - " five years"

Cailin's POV

" how does coming back to New York feel?" Stella asked me.

" exciting, definitely" I smiled.

Stella had become a really good friend of mine over the past two years. Louis had been dating her for a couple of months before I demanded on meeting her. Louis was never the type of guy to date a girl for a longer period of more than two months, so when they hit the six month mark I knew I had to meet her. I wanted to make sure she was the right girl for him. Louis took her to England and after spending the day with her I told him I approved. Not that my opinion mattered anyway. She had him wrapped around her finger.

The engagement had been my favorite part of their relationship so far though. When Louis told me that he was planning on asking her to marry him, I couldn't believe it. I was so happy for him. I went out and helped him pick out a ring that I knew Stella would love.

The smile on her face today was priceless. She looked so happy to have all her friends and family here celebrating their engagement. Stella had come from a big family very much like Louis, which was nice because they shared the same family values.

" but the unpacking is kind of insane..." I began saying but was quickly interrupted by the voice of my daughter.

" momma!' she shouted.

I looked over at the direction of her voice and saw something I never thought I'd see. Roy stood couple feet away from me with her hand wrapped around a man's hand, Harry's hand. It was a scene I had seen so many times in my dreams but felt like it could never be a reality.

My gaze left their entwined hands and reached his eyes. The beautiful greens eyes that matched Roy's so clearly. The green eyes that I missed so much. I felt my entire body shake because of my uncontrollable feelings. My emotions couldn't decide on what to do. Run to him? Cry right then and there? Smile at him? Ignore?

Roy let go of Harry's hand and ran towards me. But my eyes didn't leave Harry's eyes. I felt like I couldn't breathe. Like the breath had been knocked out of me. It wasn't until I felt Roy tugging on my shirt that my mind came back to reality.

I looked down at her and saw her knee bleeding.

" what happened?" I asked her as I took a good look at her bleeding knee.

" I fell, but the nice man helped me" Roy said looking over Harry's direction. Instead of looking at Harry, I continued to look at Roy.

" well did you thank him?" I asked.

Roy turned to him with a soft smile.

" thank you Mister..." Roy began to say before she realized she didn't know his name.

" Harry" he said.

I could tell by the way he responded that he was some what disappointed that she didn't know his name.

" come one sweetie, let's go get that cleaned" Chloe said as she took Roy away from me.

As I watched Roy walk away with Chloe I knew that I had to look over at Harry. I just didn't know what I what do after that. When my eyes finally had the courage to look up, I was faced with Harry talking to a young little boy around Roy's age. That was definitely Kian, his son. He looked just like Harry. I couldn't help but smile as the two interacted. Then the little boy walked away from him. Harry looked at me again. So there we were, only a couple of feet away from each other. So many things to say and at the same time, nothing to say.

To my surprise Harry started to take a couple of steps towards me as he tried to come up with something to say. Panic was exactly what I felt. But then the sound of glasses being tapped by silverware caught both of our attention. I looked towards the direction of the sound and saw Louis and Stella on top of the stage where the band they contracted were minutes before.

I knew that this was my moment to escape any contact with Harry. I wasn't ready to talk to him yet. So before he could look away from the lovely couple, I quickly walked away towards the other side of the party. I felt like I could finally breathe when I was out of his sight.

" we want to thank all of our friends for being here today to celebrate today with us. Our family couldn't be here but you all are truly like family to us" Louis said as he held onto Stella by the waist.

The smile she gave as she looked at him was radiant. Louis gave his fiance a short kiss  causing everyone else to cheer for them. It was amazing to see how much Louis' life had changed, for the better. Stella had been such a light in his life that no one else could replace.

I looked around to see if Harry was in sight. He wasn't. I felt a bit of a disappointment. I wanted to see him. I just didn't want to talk to him. At this point I just wanted to leave. I knew that I'd have to face him one day but today wasn't the day. Not in front of everyone. I wasn't ready. So I went after Roy and Chloe. I walked into Louis home looking for the nearest bathroom. I imagined Chloe would be in there taking care of Roy's bloody knee.

Walking towards the bathroom, on the first floor, I had to walk through the living room.

That was my mistake.

That's where, for the second time in the last ten minutes, I saw Harry again. But this time he was looking out the window. The sun was hitting him just right. The world around me froze again. There was no noise. All the music and people talking faded away as I looked at him. I continued to watch him as he turned to look at me. I just couldn't look away from him.

Here we were. Facing each other for the first time, alone. In that moment, I wasn't scared anymore. I wasn't nervous anymore. I felt calm. Like this was the way it was supposed to happen.

Surprisingly I was the first one to speak out.

" Hi" I breathed out.

He seemed somewhat surprised that I said anything to him. He took a few steps away from the window but stopping walking before he got too close to me. I guess he didn't want to scare me away like only a few minutes ago.

" five years" he responded.

I nodded with a short smile.

" thank you for helping Roy" I thanked.

" you don't have to thank me. She's a sweet kid. Sassy too" he chuckled.

" imagine having to raise that" I chuckled along that.

It was quiet for a minute. The reality settled in on us that we no longer belonged to the world but belonged to the kids we put into this world. As both of us hear little footsteps run towards us, we both look down to see his son come into view. Kian's short curly brown hair and sparkly green eyes reminded me of the many pictures of young Harry that I had seen in Cheryl's home.

" Kian, this is daddy's friend Cailin" Harry introduced.

" hi" the little boy smiled.

" he looks just like you" I said as I continued to look down at him.

" he's a good kid too" he nodded as he rubbed Kian's hair causing Kian to smile wide up at me again.

Kian tugged on Harry's dress shirt making Harry lean down. Kian whispered something into Harry's ear which made Harry smile. As Kian continued to whisper, Harry glanced at me and I couldn't help but smile. Their interaction was so sweet and different than anything I had ever seen when it came to Harry.

" you should ask her" Harry said to him.

Kian looked at me and contemplated what it would say for a few seconds.

" can I play with Roy again, tomorrow?" he asked with an innocent smile.

Everything inside me froze. Kian was Roy's brother and they didn't even know about it. Harry didn't know about it. At any moment, anyone could put the pieces together. But then again, they wanted to play with each other without even knowing they were siblings. It was amazing to me.

" sure" I half smiled.

Kian smiled wide again and skipped off to find her.

" thanks" Harry said.

" for what?" I asked.

" for allowing Kian to be apart of Roy's life and not pushing him away" he said.

" and why would I do that?"

" after all that I did to you, you have every right to"

Little did he know...
