Chapter 28 - " Does that mean we can't be friends anymore?"
I'm nervous. I've been nervous the entire morning. I tried hiding it from Roy but she knows something is off. It's her excitement to see Kian again that distracts her from asking any questions.
" You've been fidgeting all morning"
I look behind me, to see Nathan clicking through the pictures on his camera. He glances over and gives me a soft smile.
" I don't know how she'll react" I confess to him. " I'm scared she'll hate me forever."
" I really don't think she'll react like that" Nathan shakes his head.
" Are you sure?" I ask crawling onto the bed next to him.
" I think that she'll be so happy she gets to know who her father is that she won't even think about the bad parts you're thinking about" Nathan explains as he places his arm around my shoulder.
The worst scenarios go through my head as I try to prepare myself for the next couple of hours to come.
" Do you want me to come with?" Nathan asks.
He wants to support me. He wants to support Roy. But it feels wrong, so I shake my head.
" I think it should just be us, Harry and Kian" I tell him.
" His son is going?" he asks.
" Yeah, Harry wants him to be a part of it" I nod.
" I think that's a great idea" Nathan gives me a crooked smile.
The way he's been able to push his feelings about Harry aside still surprises me. He trusts my decision. Yet still encourages me to build Roy and Harry's relationship.
I reach down and place my lips on his. A sweet kiss that I've loved for years. He places his hand on the back of my neck pulling me closer towards him.
" momma!"
I pull away from Nathan with a laugh escaping my lips. I hear running footsteps coming closer. I give Nathan a short kiss before I jump out of bed.
" I'm coming!" I say grabbing my purse from the chair before running out into the living room.
Roy's hair sticks out in every direction as she holds a hairbrush in her hand. She pouts as I let out a small laugh at the way she looks.
" it's not funny momma" she says.
" oh trust me, it is" I say as I take the hairbrush from her.
I brush it all out before putting it up in a ponytail. She refuses anything but the blue hair tie surprisingly. She's always preferred the green one.
Roy says goodbye to Nathan, including a bear hug and he wishes me luck letting me know that he's only one call away.
Roy rushes out of the front door with me running behind her. She's the first to press the button for the elevator. It's another several seconds before the elevator doors open. We walk inside joining someone else inside.
" hi," I say to the man to the baseball cap.
He doesn't say anything back. He keeps his eyes on the elevator buttons. Uncharacteristically, Roy holds onto my legs, almost hiding away.
It's an odd 15 second elevator ride. But once we're on the ground floor, Roy pulls me out of it immediately.
" Is everything okay?" I ask her as I wrap my hand around her to walk on the street.
" yup," she says with a smile back on her face.
It's a twenty-minute taxi ride to get to Central Park through the traffic, making Roy only more anxious to see her friend, her brother. But once we make it, it's not hard to find the kiddie amusement park build by the fountain.
Roy see's Harry first. Her face brightens up like everytime he's brought up in conversation. She takes my hand and drags me towards Harry and Kian. We meet them by the ice cream cart.
" Kian!" Roy screams.
They hug each other like every other time before. Their own adorable little way.
" Hi Cai" Harry says.
" Hey" I smile.
He's nervous. I can tell by the way he runs his fingers through his hair. His eyes are shifting as if trying to decide when the right time will be.
I look down to see Harry wearing a bracelet. He's worn it before but it's now that I notice the blue strings on it. The same color Roy all of a sudden loves. That's when I know everything will be okay. She already loves him. She'll accept him.
The ice cream man hands Harry ice cream that he then hands to Kian.
" Do you want an ice cream too, Roy?" Harry asks.
Roy cheers and Harry chuckles at her. Roy picks out her favorite, brownie fudge. We take the ice cream and sit by the fountain. The kids eat their ice cream talking about TV shows that they love.
" Nervous?" I ask Harry.
He nods, running his fingers through his hair again. The short cut reminds me of how much shorter it has when we first met. Except now he's a man.
" Honestly, I thought about it all night, but I still don't know what to say" he admits.
" Me neither," I tell him. " But we'll tell her together"
A soft smile forms on his lips assured that it'll be okay.
Once the ice cream is half-eaten and the rest is melted, we toss them and head to the carousel. Roy wants to sit on the princess horse and Kian sits on the pumpkin next to her. It's slower so Harry and I stand outside watching them.
" I was thinking about my mom last night too" Harry confesses to me.
I look over at him, feeling privileged that he's bringing up his mom to me. " Yeah?"
" Yeah" he nods. " She would have loved these kids."
" Of course she would have" I chuckle.
" She would have probably moved out here just to be closer to them" he laughs.
I watch Roy laugh with Kian and wonder if she has the same smile that Harry's mother had. I wonder what exactly reminds Harry of his mom when he looks at Roy. I wonder what she would have thought of me and everything I've done.
" Do you think she would have hated me?" I ask him with tears beginning to form in my eyes.
Harry turns to me with his eyebrows closer together.
" What do you mean?" he asks.
" I mean about you not knowing. About Roy being a secret from you" I shrug swallowing my tears.
" I'm pretty sure she would have been more on your side than mine," he tells me making a burst of small laughter escape my lips.
He knows what to say to me to calm my anxiety down. But I truly hope he's right. There has to be some other dimension where Harry's mom is alive and watched Roy grow into the girl she is today even if Harry didn't. She would have made me come over to her place almost every day to see Roy. She would have shown me all of Harry's baby pictures just to prove how much they looked and acted alike. Roy would have loved her.
I hear clicks. I look over to see a group of three paparazzi guys clicking their cameras towards us and the kids on the carousel. A beautiful moment ruined by the reality of our careers.
" Harry" I nudge him.
His eyes see what I see and his demeanor changes. He's in his protective mode now. He doesn't want Kian in a crowd of people focused on them. Now Roy too. He doesn't want their faces exploited by the trashy headlines.
" Come on" Harry has me follow him closer to the exit of the ride. Roy and Kian run towards us and hold our hands as we walk somewhere else. They keep their distance by I knew they walk behind us. It's a silent walk between Harry and I. Both of us on edge.
RIght outside of Central Park, there's a little coffee shop Harry takes us in. We sit all the way in the back away from any windows. I sit with Roy and Kian as Harry chocolate milkshakes for them.
Kian is almost a replica of Harry when he was a child. The pictures that Cheryl did have saved, proved it. The most Kian grew out his hair, the curls were identical. His laughter is similar too, just a little higher pitched.
The kids cheer in happiness when Harry arrives with the milkshakes. He takes a seat across from me next to Kian. His eyes are focused on his fingers tapping on the table. I reach over and place my hand over his. His eyes pierce into mine, almost terrified.
" It's okay" I assure him even with my insides shaking.
He nods as he takes a deep breath.
" Roy" he says.
She looks over at him giving her full attention as she continues sipping on the milkshake.
" I... We" Harry says looking over at me again. "... wanted to tell you something. Tell both of you something."
Kian looks over at his father with a confused expression.
" What?" Roy asks.
Harry opens up his mouth but no words come out like all of his thoughts have vacated his mind. He looks at me in desperation hoping for help. I turn to Roy holding one of her hands. Her eyes go from Harry and me a couple of times before she stops on me.
" Do you remember what I told you about your Dad?" I ask her. " How it was my decision that you hadn't met him yet and that maybe one day you might?"
She nods with her eyebrows closer together just like Kian's.
" Roy..." I say catching my own words failing me.
" Roy" Harry says.
All of our eyes are on Harry now.
" I'm your Dad," Harry says before he holds his breath.
I look down at Roy to see her confused. She takes another sip of her milkshake as she stays silent. The quietest I've ever seen her.
" You're her dad?" Kian asks. Harry looks down at Kian with caring and worried eyes.
" Yeah" he says. " I'm your Dad but I'm her Dad too"
Roy continues to stay quiet, making Harry even more nervous.
" A long time ago. your Dad had a baby with your Mom, Kian" I say. " and he had a baby with me too, he just didn't know about."
" Why?" Kian asks.
" It's a little complicated" I shrug.
Harry's eyes stay on Roy, hoping for some type of reaction her, but fearing the worst. Roy looks at me, then at Harry, and then finally to Kian.
" Does that mean we can't be friends anymore?" Roy asks with the saddest tone.
" Of course you can!' Harry immediately says.
" Except now it's better because you two are brother and sister," I tell her.
Kian's eyes brighten up, all confusion has gone along with any more questions.
" Mr Harry is my Dad?" Roy asks trying to clarify.
" Yes" Harry says taking another deep breath.
Roy lets go of her milkshake and jumps out of the booth. For a moment, I fear she might run off but instead she walks over to Harry. She grabs his hand and point at his bracelet, then at her hair tie.
" Cool, because we match now" she smiles.
Tears blur my vision as I watch Harry chuckles in relief at Roy, his daughter. I wipe my tears away only to catch a few falling from Harry's eyes as well.
" You're crying" Roy says as she places her small hands on her cheeks.
" I'm happy" he smiles. " Really happy."
~
The moment is finally here! The way Roy pointed towards their matching colors literally made me cry!
