You Didn't Fail
December 11th-
Jessica and the kids woke up early on Sunday and got ready for church. Jessica made them a Sunday breakfast then they headed out the door.
After church Jessica was going over Ann's for the day. Each Sunday, everyone in Jessica's family including Sarah, would alternate Sunday lunches.
When they got to Ann's everyone was very energetic. Jessica was still a bit down, but being with her family made things better.
The kids enjoyed themselves with their cousins and Jessica sat with her sisters, Sarah, and her parents.
"Jessica, how's work? You must be so busy! I was reading about that one case in the vindicator." Jane says
"Very busy... Hopefully we can put this case to rest and lock the asshole up." Jessica says with a chuckle.
"My lawyer! All of my children are so successful. It makes me so happy and proud." Dorthy says sitting next to Albert.
"We couldn't have done it without you two." Ann says
"I guess we are all successful when it comes to work. But when it comes to marriage, I fail." Jessica says suddenly.
The table got quite. Jessica hadn't realized what she said until after she said it. She covered her mouth and gasped
"I'm sorry!" Jessica says
"Don't apologize Jessica, it's okay..." Sarah says putting her hand on Jessica's shoulder.
"You didn't fail." Albert says sincerely
"I kinda did, dad. Danny filed for divorce. It's official."
Everyone was shocked. They knew it would happen after he left, but hearing it took them all back a few steps.
"We will be here for you Jessica, you won't go through this alone. Anything you need, we will all help." Ann says
"Yea, it's going to be okay." George says
"It confuses me! What did I ever do?" Jessica gets emotional very quickly and very flustered.
No one knew what to say. That's because know one knew why Danny did what he did and why he left. Everyone thought they had a perfect marriage and things were okay.
"He doesn't deserve you. He's an ass Jessica. He broke your heart and he isn't worth the tears." Ann says sternly
"And the kids... The kids! They are heart broken. I can never be home anymore because the asshole took everything! I have to work harder for what I already worked for."
"We can help you Jessica, if you're having financial struggles just tell us." Albert says
"You've all done too much for me. I can't ask you for money. But I'll fine."
**
That night was a quite night. Olivia did her school work in her room and Sean was in the living room watching football. Jessica was in her office catching up on work.
Sean slowly walked in and sat in front of Jessica.
Jessica took her glasses off and gave Sean a small smile.
"Hey sweetie? What's up?"
"Do you ever give yourself a break? You're always working." Sean groans
"Sean, I have to work. I can't not work. I have too much on my plate."
"I just feel so bad, you're working so hard for us."
Jessica chuckles and looks at Sean. "Don't feel bad. It's my job!"
"Still, I never give you enough credit for how much you do for us."
"I love you. You're a great kid."
"That's why it's so hard to call dad."
Jessica let out a sigh. "Why?"
"Where has he been? That's what I always think. He hasn't been here. But you have. I always think.... Does he really deserve a call?"
"He does... He's your father. Don't let me affect whether or not you call him. I can't stress that enough!"
Sean nods and pulls out his phone.
"I guess here it goes then." He waves his phone in the air and stands up.
Jessica gives him a soft smile then puts her glasses back on.
"Mom." Sean says at the door way.
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I love you too."
**
Sean went into his room and closed the door. He held the post it note in his hand and looked at Danny's number. He pulled out his phone and called him.
His heart raced.
"Hello?" Danny says enthusiastically
"Dad... It's me, Sean."
"Sean, hi. I'm really glad you called."
"Yeah."
"How are you and your sister?"
"We're just fine."
"I'd really like to see you guys, kind of explain what's going on."
"I think we kinda already know what's going on."
"But I need to tell you my side."
"You cheated on mom."
Danny let out a deep sigh.
"I just need to see you two."
"I miss you kids. I've been so afraid to call." Danny adds
"Me too."
"How about I swing by Monday after work. Will that be good?"
"That would be fine. I'd have to talk to mom, but I don't think it will be a problem."
"Maybe I could talk to your mother too."
"You'd have to discuss that with her, not me."
"Okay, I understand. How about I swing by at five?"
"Okay... Bye."
Sean hung up the phone and threw it. He hunched over the bed and held his head. He was so frustrated.
Suddenly Olivia walked in.
"Who was that?"
"Olivia why are you eavesdropping?" Sean says
"That was dad, wasn't it?"
"Yeah... it was."
Olivia walks into his room and sits down next to him.
"What did he want?" Olivia says curiously
"He wants to see us, tomorrow."
"Really?" Olivia becomes a bit excited then hides her excitement.
Sean nods.
"So we see him tomorrow? I haven't seen him since he left."
"Don't you feel like we are betraying mom?"
"No... He's our dad." Olivia says
"Okay. Well I should go talk to her and let her know what's going on."
**
Sean walks downstairs and Jessica was still working. Olivia walks down with him.
"Hey you two!" Jessica giggles
"I just got off the phone with dad." Sean says quickly
"Oh. Okay... how did it go?"
"Fine, we are going to see him tomorrow. Is that okay?"
"After school, right?" Jessica says
They both nod.
"How do you feel about this, liv?"
"I kinda miss him." She says
"I know... I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize."
"He's going to pick us up here? Is that okay too?"
"Mhm, that's fine."
"And there's one more thing." Sean bites his lip.
"What?" Jessica raises her eyebrows
"He wants to talk to you... you don't have to."
Jessica was quite for a moment. She took a deep breath and rubbed her hands through her hair.
"I have to think about it... Maybe after you're done. I just don't know if I can talk to him."
"That's fine mom. Thank you."
"No problem."
