Times Have Changed

March 8th-

"Now, when I give you back this phone I trust that you will no longer talk to Nathan nor will you sneak around with him." Jessica holds Olivia's phone in her hand, tightly.

"Yes ma'am. I promise I won't." Olivia puts her shoulders back and stares at her phone. She wouldn't take her eyes off of it.

"It still has restrictions. No social media for another month." Jessica hands it to her then crosses her arms.

"Thank you, mom. I promise I won't disobey you." She hugs Jessica tightly and smiles.

"You better not. Now go get ready so we can leave for Aunt Jane's."

Olivia nods and runs up the stairs with her phone.

Sean let's out a sarcastic chuckle then walks into the living room. Jessica's eyes follow him as he walks away.

"What was that chuckle for?" Jessica says stopping him.

"I just can't believe you gave it back. She still has ways of reaching out to him."

"She knows that I will sweep through it every night. Don't worry." Jessica says

Deep down inside she was a nervous wreck giving Olivia back her privileges. She wanted to trust her and move past this. She also wanted to protect her.

"Believe it or not times have changed, mom. People know how to hide things. Kids are sneaky." Sean turns around shaking his head.

"Hey! How have they changed?" Jessica follows him.

"Why would I tell you? I wouldn't be able to get anything past you." He laughs

Jessica playfully hits his arm then looks him in the eyes.

"It's a joke. I promise you."

"It better be! Go get ready so we can leave!"

Jane's house-

Since the sun was out Jane wanted to have a small get together at her house. She invited everybody for the day.

Jessica was a bit preoccupied. She couldn't get what Sean said to her about hiding things out of her mind. Jessica became paranoid like the kids were hiding so much more and she didn't even know it.

"Hey Jessica, could you help me with the casserole?" Jane says calling Jessica from the kitchen.

"Yea sure!"

Jessica walks in and starts helping Jane prepare dinner.

"Jane, I have a question to ask you."

"Alright, shoot."

"When we were younger do you remember hiding stuff from mom and dad?"

"Hell yea. If mom and dad knew how much partying I did they'd cut my head off. Haha, why?"

"In a way do you think times have changed and our kids may know how to hide things better? I always say that I know all the tricks but now I'm starting to think I don't."

Jane takes off her apron and rest her body on the counter.

"For sure I think times have changed." She says

Ann then walks in and closes the kitchen door behind her.

"Hey guys, what's going on?" Ann says happily

"Well, Jessica is worried about kids out smarting us." Jane giggles

"It's not funny! I'm worried that maybe now that there is lots of technology and stuff that our kids can get stuff passed us and we don't even know it. It's making me a nervous wreck."

"Oh Jessie! The kids think they are smarter than us but they aren't... really they aren't." Ann says

"All this stuff that happened with Olivia has me thinking a lot. I mean how did I not know for so long? I just gave her back her phone today and I always catch myself creeping over her shoulder to see who she is texting."

"Kids can delete messages..." Jane turns around and starts tossing the salad.

"Yea... shit I totally forgot!" Jessica whines

"You know what, you can look at her phone bill." Ann points her finger and her face lights up.

"What?" Jessica says in confusion.

"Jake and I request a summary of the apps that use up all their storage and papers filled with all their texts. I told you, they can't out smart us. Just last month I found out that Heather was sending homework answers to these boys for a ride to a party. Boy you won't believe how much trouble she got into." Ann huffs

"What are we doing wrong? Why do are kids feel the need to do all this shit?" Jane shakes her head then pulls out three wine glasses.

"It makes me feel like a horrible parent. God damn it! Maybe if I just payed more attention." Jessica runs her fingers through her hair and sighs.

"No, don't say that. You aren't a horrible parent. It was a hard time but you and the kids are past it. The past is the past." Ann says taking Jessica's hand.

"Cheers to that. Here is a glass of wine for each of my sisters. Let's drink to having crazy kids." Jane holds up her glass.

"I just wish they were babies again. Chubby little babies!" Jessica sighs

A week later-

"Bye mom, we will see you in a couple days!" Olivia grabs her bag to go to Danny's then hugs Jessica.

"Call me. And don't forget to finish your science project." She holds her cheeks and kisses her again.

"I'll make sure I help her with it." Danny says standing at the door.

Jessica looks at him with a blank face. She was silent for a moment. Then she shook her head and smiled. Her attention went right back to Olivia.

"Remember, phone off at nine."

"Okay mom! I'll make sure!"

"Good! I'll see you soon!" Olivia turns to Danny

"Hey kid, go wait in the car I have to talk to your mom." Danny says patting her back.

Olivia goes to the car and Jessica stands in front of Danny.

"So, you gave her back the phone?" Danny says

"I mine as well. She's learned her lesson. She still isn't aloud to go on there and her phone is restricted. Why, is there a problem?"

"I'm afraid I still don't trust her." Danny crosses his arms. He looks back at the car then back at Jessica.

"Oh"

"I thought maybe we should have talked about it first."

"Listen Danny, track season is starting and I want her to have the phone in case of emergencies. It's easier on me." Jessica says

"Still, give her a flip phone."

"If you want to go out and buy a flip phone you do that."

"You don't have to be rude. I just don't agree with you. Maybe we should rethink this. It's all a bad idea."

"I guess we never agree on things. You don't live here anymore and you don't pay for the phone. You don't have a say. Now I need to get back to work if you don't mind leaving." Jessica puts her hands on her hips.

Jessica tried so hard to get along with Danny. At times it was difficult because of the anger she had towards him. She easily got frustrated with him.

"Fine... but I'm telling you this is a bad idea." Danny steps down and walks towards the car.

"I trust her!"
