Third Wheel

February 20th-

"Happy birthday, I can't believe my baby boy is seventeen! How did you grow so much." Jessica walks into the kitchen and gives Sean a hug.

"Mom, I'm not a baby anymore." He laughs turning to Jessica.

"What do you want to do today after school? Please don't tell me you have work!" Jessica sighs

"Of course not... I was actually thinking maybe we can all go out to dinner. The four of us."

"As in your father too?"

"Yea, like we do every year." Sean says awkwardly.

Olivia huffs then slams the fridge door.

"Do you really think that would work out? That's like having Tom and Jerry at a dinner table." Olivia says in a snarky tone.

"Listen Olivia, I get that you are pissed off. At least cool of the attitude." Jessica says sternly

"So yea or nah?" Sean says anxiously

"I'll call your dad. Maybe we can plan dinner for tonight." Jessica nods.

Over the last week Olivia and Jessica still weren't on the best terms. Jessica stood stern and didn't give In to her punishment. It made Olivia all the more upset.

That night after work Jessica was able to get ahold of Danny. They planned to go out to dinner for Sean's birthday that night.

While Jessica got ready her heart raced. She was so nervous to go out to dinner with Danny. She wanted it to be a great night for Sean's birthday.

When they got to the restaurant Danny waited for them.

"Hey dad, we are over here!" Sean exclaims

"Hey, there's the birthday boy! Happy birthday, kid!" Danny hugs Sean and pats his back.

Olivia ran up to Danny and gave him a hug. "Dad, finally!" Olivia says

"Hey, Liv. What's up?"

"I just need to talk to a parent that isn't mad at me." She whispers

"About that. You and I are going to talk after dinner." He says sternly

Olivia rolls her eyes and walks away. Jessica stood behind the kids with a smile on her face.

"Can you believe it, our son is seventeen." He whispers as they walk to their table.

"I feel like it was just yesterday that we brought him home. My boy is so grown up."

"That's right."

The night went pretty well. Jessica and Danny got along just fine. The kids enjoyed themselves and Sean had a great birthday. It was the perfect night.

They were all sad to see it end, but they were starting to get tired.

Danny walked them back to Jessica's car to say goodbye.

"Thanks for a fun night. I'm glad we could all get together." Sean says saying goodbye to Danny.

"Thanks for inviting me. And happy birthday, again!" Danny says

Sean waves goodbye and gets in the car. It was just Olivia, Jessica, and danny.

"Dad, can I stay with you?" Olivia says

"No, liv. As much as I'd love that you have to stay with your mother."

"What the heck! I hate this!" Olivia groans

"Jessica, can I talk to Olivia alone for a second?"

"Sure, I'll be waiting in the car."

**

Olivia got in the car with tears running down her face. She slammed the door and crossed her arms.

"What's wrong?" Jessica turns to her.

"Leave me alone! You did this! You ruined my life, my relationship with Nathan, and my relationship with dad." She snaps

Jessica turns back around and laughs. Sean looks at her with a funny look.

"I didn't do this to you, Olivia. You did this to yourself. If you would have just followed my rules."

"Dad doesn't want me coming over until my grounding is over. You just made him hate me. Why are you like this!"

"Olivia, shut up already." Sean groans

"Oh cool it, Sean. We all know your not a virgin." Olivia says

"That's not true, hoe!" He turns around

Jessica takes a deep breath. "That's enough! I've had enough!" She yells

The kids stop.

"Olivia, if you keep this up you'll be grounded for more then a month. I suggest you straighten up your attitude before it gets you in trouble."

"Whatever." She says leaning back.

That night Jessica sat in her room reading up on case files. Someone knocked on her door softly. Jessica sat up and took off her readers.

"Come in." She smiles

As the door opens she sees Olivia in her pajamas.

"Hi, did you need something?" Jessica says

"I wanted to talk to you, can I come in?"

"Of course, come sit next to me." Jessica clears off the other side of the bed and Olivia sits next to her.

She rest her head on Jessica's chest as Jessica wraps her arms around Olivia. Jessica puts her head on Olivia's and sighs.

"Mommy?" She whispers

"Yes baby?"

"I'm sorry for everything. I've been out of line. I just wanted to be like all the other girls that had boyfriends. I felt so left out. Kate, Jenny, Sage, and Kelly all had boyfriends and I was always the third wheel. When Nathan sat next to me at lunch I wasn't third wheeling anymore. He really liked me and a boy has never liked me. I just got excited and had fun with him. He's really nice. Tonight when dad talked to me it just made me realize that family is more important than boys. I've let you down and I hate that. None of it was worth it because I see how upset you and dad are. I just want you to forgive me."

Jessica hugs Olivia even tighter and kisses the top of her head. "Sometimes it's better to talk to your mom about this stuff before going behind her back. There will be many boys that will like you. Nathan isn't the only one."Jessica giggles

"I know and I'm so sorry."

"It's okay... just no more dating until you're sixteen. You're so beautiful. Your father and I made this rule to protect you."

"I just wanted to be like the other girls."

"You don't have to be like the other girls. You are your own person. And I love you for you." Jessica cups her face with her hands and smiles.

"I still have Taylor and Rachel, right?"

"Yes, and friends are forever. Boys aren't always forever."

"It was just all so exciting and new to me. But when I was with him I felt like a different person that I didn't like. He made me break the rules."

"You shouldn't be with a boy that changes you for the worst."

"And I'll sigh grounded for all long as you want. I just want you to not be disappointed anymore."

"I love you, Livy. I feel like this is my fault. You've been looking for attention fro boys. These last few months have been crazy and I know I haven't been around because I'm always working. But I want to change that. I promise I will."

"I understand but this isn't your fault."

"I think we are all at fault here." Jessica hugs Olivia even tighter and holds her in her arms.

It was a relief to Jessica. Things had been so bumpy between them she didn't know how the situation would end up.

"Can I sleep in here tonight?"

"Of course!"
