Promises

Later that night//

Jessica wasn't feeling well all day, so she tried to get off work early and just bring all of her work home. When she saw Neil she apologized for what happened. She was so embarrassed. When she got home the house was empty, which is what she suspected. Jessica felt like she really messed up. She never drank, but now she was starting to and she didn't feel like herself. Her kids have been witnessing her going through one of the hardest moments in her life.

She couldn't help but feel like she was messing up and not being the mother her kids need her to be. Jessica tried to get ahold of the kids, but they didn't answer.

Jessica sat her things down on her desk and she sighed looking at the stacks of papers she brought home with her. Jessica saw the mail that she had set on her desk and decided to go through it. AS she flipped through the envelopes she saw mounds of bills, adds, then what really got her eye was an envelope addressed to Jessica, from Danny.

Jessica stared at it with anger. Even seeing Danny's handwriting made her want to scream. She decided to open it. All that was in the envelope was a check for a thousand dollars. Jessica held it close to her face so she could read it.

"Wow, thanks for sending me my own money, asshole." Jessica huffs then throws the envelope onto the desk chair.

It started to get dark, Jessica was still alone and the kids weren't answering. Jessica made dinner and sat in the kitchen hoping they would come home.

Around nine the kids walked in. Jessica was throwing away dinner that she made for the kids. She tossed the food into the trash then cleaned the dishes one by one. Tears fell from her eyes. The kids walked into the kitchen.

"Mom?" Olivia says softly

Jessica was startled. She quickly jumped then turned around. She ran to the kids and hugged them.

"Where were you two? I was so worried!" Jessica cries looking into their eyes.

"We were at the Wilkin's house, they invited us for dinner." Sean says

"And you didn't care to call or ask? I get that you are mad at me but I'm still your mother and I want to know where you guys are at all times!" Jessica raises her voice. She became distressed. She walked over to the table and sat down.

The kids looked at each other then walked towards Jessica. They sat at the table with her and took her hands.

"We are sorry for how we've been acting. We know it doesn't make things easier and we are so sorry." Sean says softly to Jessica. She nods and looks at the both of them, tightly grasping onto their hands.

"I love you both. I love you so much... From the day I brought you two home from the hospital I promised myself that I would do everything in life to protect you and work my ass off to give you the best life. Your father and I also made a promise to raise our children in one, happy, household and to never put you guys through a divorce. I never thought this would have happened. I'm sorry that you had to see your father and I fight and be unhappy. You had to watch our family slowly drift and change so much. We used to be so happy...." Jessica stops for a moment and breaks into tears.

Olivia looks at her and quivers her lip, in a shaky tone she says, "You don't have to do this mom... It's okay. And you have given us the best life. You've done so much. This is all dads fault and his doing, not yours." Olivia reassures her.

"But I do, I need to explain myself, and talk to you guys about it. We need to talk about this. We can't keep things to ourselves anymore." Jessica thought about how she kept the affair in the back of her mind. She always thought about it, but denied it.

The kids both nod and let Jessica continue.

"Your father and I weren't happy anymore. I always say this and it never loses it's meaning, but I did try. I tried so hard to make things right. I wanted us to be a happy family again. Your father and I acting the way we did in front of you was horrible... You guys didn't deserve to see that. Sadly, he does want a divorce. That's why he left. If you ever thought it was your fault, it wasn't, it was mine. *Sigh* I haven't herd from him since. But lots of things are going to change. We have to cut down on spending, I'll be a work a lot more, and I don't think your dad will be moving back... Olivia, Sean, you have to promise me that you will not let your father and I's problems effect your relationship with him. I don't want that. Your relationship with him is important. And for my actions, I have no excuse. I wish I could cope with my feelings, but right now it feels impossible. What happened last night will never happen again. I promise. If you have questions you can ask." Jessica looks at the kids who were on the verge to tears. She held onto them tight, waiting for one of them to say something.

"I haven't herd from him either. I tried to call but it didn't go through." Olivia sighs

"Me too, but he cancelled all of our data, not that it matters." Sean says

Hearing that Danny didn't want to hear from the kids either made her so upset. She wanted the kids to have a relationship with him.

"Who will we live with?" Olivia says in a shaky voice.

"For right now, home, here with me. I can't say where for the future until your father and I reach an agreement."

"I want to stay here." Olivia says sternly

"I won't live with dad." Sean adds

"Kids... In the future if we do come to a court ordered agreement, you will have to see him. You can't go against the courts."

"That's the future. I'm talking about now. I won't see him, I won't. He left, he doesn't deserve us, he doesn't deserve you. Your such an amazing mother and you were an awesome wife to him. I don't know why he would throw that all away." Sean becomes frustrated and Jessica tries to calm him down.

"Can't he fight for custody?"

Jessica becomes nervous and nods.

"You'll fight back, right? You won't let him take us away?" Olivia starts to shake and ramble.

"No baby, I won't let him take you away."

"I hate this, you don't deserve this. Why did he do this to you, to us?" Sean bangs the table

"Sean, I don't know why. I really do wish I did know so I could go back and fix things."

"And for last night, it's okay. We aren't mad, we were just scared. We aren't angry with you, we are angry with him. He did this to you and it isn't fair! It's so frustrating. I hate being this angry!" Sean sighs and covers his face.

"We all have different emotions, some of us are frustrated, sad, angry, and heartbroken. We deal with it in different ways. We have to make a promise, a promise that we won't hold it in. We will stick together through thick and thin. We will come to each other when we need it. Don't hold it back, just talk about it." Jessica nods, trying to calm herself and stay strong for the kids.

Olivia put her hand in the center on the table.

"I promise." She says proudly

"Me too, I promise." Sean says placing his hand above Olivia's.

Jessica smiles and places her hand above Sean's. "I promise."
