I Want To See Them

June 8th:

Jessica and Sam's Anniversary turned out better than they could have imagined. They stayed the weekend in the city instead of one night and had gotten home the day before Logan's gotcha day.

Logan was a simple child and didn't like to make a big fuss over things. He was an easy boy. All he asked was a day with his mom and dad and sister. Unfortunately Olivia was sick, so it was just going to be Sam and Jessica today.

He changed his mind on fishing and decided to go camping for the day.

Logan was an adventurous little boy. He loved the outdoors and everything about camping, being out in the wilderness and getting dirty. He was just like Sam.

They didn't plan to spend the night on the trails, but Jessica brought a little tiny tent for "lunch breaks" just to make it a little bit more fun for him.

"I think we are all packed! Hiking shoes.... water, hiking bags, hats, sunglasses, food! We are all good to go!" Sam says closing up the car trunk

"I wish Olivia would come!" He pouts

"I know, but she's not feeling well, so it's just you me and mommy! We are way more fun."

"Who's way more fun?" Jessica says as she locks up the house.

"You and daddy!" Logan smiles

"That's right! Are we ready to head out?" Jessica says giving Logan a kiss.

"Yes! Let's go!"

It was early in the morning. There were some call sites and trails in Minnesota near the house that Jessica and Sam wanted to take Logan too. They had the perfect little day trip planned out for their boy.

"Logan, maybe after today, we can sign you up for cub scouts! I did cub scouts when I was your age. All the way until I was a senior In high school." Sam exclaims

"Yes! I want to be like Freddy and Nathan. They do that stuff!"

"Sounds like something you two could bond over." Jessica says to Sam

"My dad and I had the best time, buddy."

"Daddy? Is your dad my grandpa? Like Papa Al is my grandpa?"

Never has Logan asked about Sam's parents. It was always either the elephant in the room or the untouched subject. For the first time in a while, Sam has been brining up his parents more often then not. Logan caught on pretty fast.

Jessica looks at Sam who was driving and was curious for an answer. Jessica always tried to get Sam to visit his sick parents, but he couldn't.

"Yes." Sam says breathlessly

"When can I meet them? Why don't I know them?" Logan asks

"Well, because, they are sick buddy. They wouldn't understand." Sam sighs

"I don't get it." He says

Jessica saw Sam getting a little lost for words so she stepped in.

"Daddy's mom and dad are sick. They don't have a good memory. They forget people and forget things. So it's hard to meet them when they are sick." Jessica says turning back at her innocent son.

"Oh, okay." He whispers

"Thank you" Sam mouths

Around nine they arrive to the camp grounds and start their hike. Sam was a big hiker. Not too long ago he bought the whole family gear and they were finally getting use out of it.

"So, Logan, I was thinking you and I go catch a nice fish, start a fire, and have it for lunch." Sam says with excitement

"Ohhh, yeah!" Logan agrees

"You two do that while mommy calls and checks up on Livy."

"Daddy, did I make you upset when I asked your about my other papa?" Logan asks as they wait by the water

"No, of course not son. You're just young and it's hard to understand."

"Do I have more family?"

"You do, but it's very complicated." Sam sighs

"I hope one day it isn't so I can meet more of my family." He smiles innocently

"Me too, bud. Me too."

After a little heart to heart with Logan, Sam's eyes were opened up a bit. Hearing Logan ask about Sam's family made him want to go up to Stillwater and have them all meet his boy. But his family wasn't like that. It wishes everyday that his parents Alzheimer's would go away and they'd be able to meet and remember Logan. Sam didn't know if he wanted to expose Logan to that dark side of his life.

"Today was a good day, wasn't it?" Jessica says tucking herself into bed next to Sam. Ever since their little talk with Logan, Sam was feeling guilty and sad. It had been awhile since he saw his family.

"Yeah... but I want to talk to you about something." He says

"Anything, honey." She says

"I want to visit my family next weekend. Introduce them to Logan... he deserve to know all of his family, for not having much before he met us." He sighs

Jessica was completely surprised to hear this. His sisters were invited to the baby shower but never came. Jessica thought that was the last of the effort Sam would put in, but it wasn't and she was so happy.

"Okay, great. We can go next weekend!" She says happily without a second thought.

"Really? You're okay with this? Especially after how they treated you?" He sighs

"Sam, your family is my family. Let's do it, okay?"

"But I'm too scared." He whispers

"Sam, you know, after time goes by, you'll regret those moments that you had the chance and the urge to go. This is the first time in a long time since we have been together that you want to go back. I fully support you. I think this will be good for you. See your parents, your sisters, and talk to them." She says taking his hand.

"I send my sisters 40% of what I make here for their kids, family, and I pay for the facility where my parents are. But it's never enough for them."

"Because sometimes money can't fix the problem. Maybe your sisters want more than a pay check every month...."

A few days later,

The weekend was approaching. Sam and Jessica got all of the trip organized and ready. Olivia was on board to go and meet Sam's family. She knew nothing about them but wanted to meet them. Logan was beyond excited. He finally was able to meet his other family. Jessica and Sam agreed that this would be good for him.

Sam showed Logan pictures of his parents and sisters so he didn't go in with a blind eye. Jessica and Sam were able to sit down and explain the situation the best they could to a little boy and make it so he understood what could happened when they get there.

"So they have bad memory?" Logan asks

"Yes, it's a sickness and there isn't any medicine to help them. But, I know they will love you deep down. It can be confusing for them to meet new people and remember things." Sam says softly

"But they remember you? Parents always remember their kids." He smiles

Sam sighs and let's Jessica take over.

"See honey, they may or may not remember daddy. It can be hard, but we know, like daddy said, that deep down they know us and remember us." Jessica says taking Sam's hand.

"Logan, it can be confusing but I think you'll have a great time." His big sister smiles

"Thanks, Liv." Sam says with a small smile.

"I'm excited, no matter what it will be fun." Logan cheers
