I'm A Mother First
A few days later-
"So is there any updates on where they are going to send Logan? I mean it's so unfair to move a little boy back and forth and back and forth." Olivia says
Sam serves Sean and Olivia their breakfast then sits down with them.
The last few days had been pretty hectic. Especially for Jessica. Ever since she got the call from Logan she's been fighting to bring him home. Sam and Jessica agreed that they'd like to give this little boy the right home. Olivia and Sean thought so as well.
Ever since the last time Jessica had saw Logan before he was moved to his first foster home, he had been in and out of three different homes. He was unhappy in each one and each parent (s) treated him badly. The line was drawn when he was put in an abusive home where he was hurt, badly. That's when he was able to get to Dennis to get to Jessica.
Her heart hurt for this little boy who was alone and scared. Jessica wanted to provide comfort and security to him. Right now he was sent back to the last home, the worst one. There was no where else for him to go until Jessica could change that. So for now she spent every day at work trying to sort it all out.
"No update yet... your mother is just trying very hard. She's beating herself up over all this."
"I remember her talking about him. It seemed like they really had a connection and she really fell in love with this boy."
"Your mother is as sweet and nurturing as they come. I just hope this boy doesn't get screwed over by the fucked up system." Sam says with anger
"What can we do?"
"Well your mom left this morning saying it's a possibility that someone will be coming to inspect the house. So she asked that we clean, make everything spotless and safe. If you guys don't mind working on that in here I'm going to go hide all the sharp and pointy stuff in the barns. They'll for sure want to check that out as well. Try to make everything look nice."
"Yeah, of course." Sean says
"Anything."
"I get that this is a lot. And I know your mother has been meaning to thank you two, for being supportive and letting us do this."
"We see how badly mom is trying and how passionate she is about all this. Yeah it's frustrating doing all this for a boy we haven't met but it will be worth it." Sean says
"You guys are the best. And if it's any constellation, I haven't met him either. But I've heard only great things."

Jessica's pov-
"Wendy, I'm begging you! There has to be some way you can at least get him out of that foster home! How can you send a child back to an abuser like that? You were there when the cops where called, when the boy was shaking to death scared out of his mind!" Jessica leans over her desk clenching her fist. So much rage flowed through her blood. She raised her voice at Wendy and didn't regret it once.
"Jessica, I suggest you sit down."
"I'm standing up for this five year old. I don't think you understand what he's been through. His father was abusive. He beat him and his mother. Logan watched his mother die right in front of his eyes! He's only five, Wendy! And you're sending him all over the place when he could come home with me. Let me take him!"
"Miss Lange, I suggest you sit down." She says in a much more harsh tone
Jessica quickly sits down and huffs.
"This isn't your field. You don't understand how many little boys and girls I have to watch be failed by this system everyday. Sometimes there are never solutions." Wendy says
"But you have your solution right here! Me! I told you I'd take him. Let me take him away from that home and come to mine. You know my family Wendy. We're all good people. We'd love this little boy so much. I already do. Him wanting to call me, that's a sign. Can't you see!"
"It's much more complicated than you think. It could take months until you can legally foster him. I can put my job in jeopardy if I send him home to you without everything being legal!"
Jessica leans back in the chair and cries softly. She wanted so badly to take this boy home. Seeing him memorial night after she got the phone call haunted her. The look in his eyes was burned into her memory forever. She wasn't going to give up.
"Now, if you will stop making my job more difficult and focus on your own, I'll get back to you." Wendy says standing up and opening her office door.
"Please, Wendy..."
"Good bye, Jessica."

3 days ago, Memorial night-
Immediately after Jessica got the call from Dennis with Logan on the phone, she rushed to the site. Logan was crying for her. She never thought she'd get a call, but she was glad she did.
When she arrived at the house, Dennis, a bunch of patrol cars, and Logan were all outside. They had Logan resting in the patrol car with another officer who was trying to calm him down. When Dennis saw Jessica he stopped her quickly before she raced over to the little boy.
"Jessica, you can't freak out. Just be here for Logan and let us do our jobs."
"Freak out? Is he hurt?" Jessica says looking over his shoulder
"Jessica, look at me...." Dennis says sternly
Jessica breathes heavily
"I know you connected with this little boy. And I'm going to do everything I can to protect him. Case workers are just making this difficult. The foster father is in the house trying to fight this and get Logan back."
"Did he hurt Logan? Did he hurt that little boy!" Jessica yells
"Jessica'! Keep it together. Go to him and comfort him... please, let us do our jobs."
Jessica runs to the patrol car and sees Logan holding an ice pack on his face. His frail little body was bruised from head to toe. He looked starved. His tiny body shook in fear.
"Logan sweetie, it's Jessie." She says removing the icepack from his face so that he could see her.
Jessica broke into tears with she saw his swollen lip and eye. Logan cried too. Relieved to see Jessica.
"It's okay, I'm here... that you for calling me." She cries as she puts the ice back on his face and holds him. He clenches onto her shirt and refuses to let go.
"I lost your card... I'm sorry..."
"No, sweetie don't apologize. I'm going to help you."
"I want to stay with you. Please..." He begs
Dennis overhears the conversation. When he saw the connection between these two and how comfortable Logan was with Jessica in only a matter of seconds, he wanted to work extra hard to help. He felt guilty for before, not helping.
As the cops sorted things out with the foster father Jessica stayed in the patrol car with Logan. He refused to let her leave.
"Dennis, what's the update?" She whispers over from the car
"It's not looking good Jess. There is no where for him to go tonight. It seems like he'll have to stay here."
"No! Dennis he can't!"
"Jessica, what was our agreement?"
"I don't care! This boy needs a safe place to stay. Let him come with me!"
Then, officers come up to the car. He foster father sat on his porch with a nasty look on his face waiting for the little boy to come back.
"We have to take him now." The one officer says as he reaches for him
"Don't touch him. Let me just talk to him. He's sleeping, let him rest at least!" Jessica says
"Boys, give them a minute. I'll handle this."
"Hurry up Dennis."
They turn their backs on the car. Dennis gets in the car and closes the door with Jessica and Logan inside.
"Make it quick."
"Please Dennis. Don't let him leave my arms." She cries
"Jessica, there is nothing I can do." He says
Jessica cries softly and Logan begins to wake up.
"What's happening?" He cries
"Logan listen to me. You need to be strong. Okay? You have to go back. But I'll be here making sure you come home to me. So you can meet my son and daughter. Remember when I told you about them?" She cries
"No! I can't go back." He yells
The cops look back over. They were getting anxious and wanted to leave.
Jessica holds him tight and doesn't let him go. "I'm so sorry... I promise you, we'll see each other soon. You'll be okay. Just be a good boy." Jessica cries
"What if he does it again?"
Jessica reaches for her phone and hands it to him.
"No, Jess don't do that."
"See, swipe right and go to phone. You call this man, Sam... tell him who you are and that you need me. Or this man, Dennis... but before you call either of these people call 911. Okay? Tell them what's going on. Hide this." She says stuffing it between his belt and pants. She tucks the shirt over it and made sure it was on silent.
"Take that back. If he's caught with it, it would be a big mess for him."
"Jessica don't leave me!"
Then, the officers knock on the window. Dennis nods and takes Logan from Jessica. He kicks and screams. But Jessica promised she'd keep her composure, as hard as it was. She was so angry at the system, these cops, and Dennis for sending Logan back to this man. She needed to fight for this boy.
"Stop!" Jessica says grabbing him and hugging him on last time.
"I love you, Logan.. okay? I love you. Remember that."
He nods kicks and screams again. Dennis hands the boy to the cops and they carry him back up the stairs.
"Jessica, I'm sorry..." he says coming up to her
She pushes him away and huffs. "The day after I met him I told you I was in love with him, that I wanted to adopt him! You pushed me away, told me his foster parents were great! Now look where he is, in his third home, being beaten! You do this to him. All of you!"
Jessica turns back to the house and watches Logan go inside with the officers, still putting up a fight.
"I can't believe you, Dennis! Do you not have any sympathy?"
"I do! But you don't understand how delicate these cases are. You should know, you're a DA!"
"I don't care what I am. Before anything else I'm a mother.... and my motherly instincts kick in. You need to understand that I'm going to fight for this child. I'm handing his mothers case to someone else. I won't have anymore personal connections." Jessica storms off and cries softly
Dennis couldn't help but feel guilty. If he hadn't been so stand offish to Jessica about adopting him maybe he could have helped sooner and Logan never would have went through any of this. Now he was making it his duty to get justice for Logan first and get him with Jessica.

Later that night-
"Hey babe, everything is clean. Any updates?"
"No, let me check your phone to see if he called."
"He didn't babe, I'm sorry... I've had it on me all day."
"Maybe I should call?"
"No, don't do that."
Jessica sighs and begins to cry. She was so frustrated and scared.
"It's okay, it's going to work out. We're going to keep fighting until we have him, or until he's out of that house. We're in everyone's prayers."
"Prayers won't work!"
Jessica was traumatized after Monday. What she had to go through, having Logan put back in that house and out of her arms killed her. She wasn't able to sleep, she was worried sick about his well being and if he was okay.
"It will work out, mom. If there is anything we can do, just tell us." Sean says walking in
Jessica cries even more and hugs her son tight. "Thank you baby... thank you all for being so supportive and good about all this."
"Of course, ma."
"I love this little boy, I really do. He deserves the world and I think we can give that to him."
