Short Story 3
It was evaluation day, and Ayano was twelve, almost thirteen years old. She had been under a serum and on the screen it showed her fears.
The first one, was claustrophobia. She was in a shrinking box, and she was freaking out. It was because in another training method they used for them to concur their fears, they made them go into it for real. When she was little, it was always a caution to it, but what they did just made it worse.
The objective was, to get your heart rate down, and find a way to stop it. And under the serum, her brain thought it was real. Since it was aimed at the part of the brain that processed fear.
And so, she was lying on the table right now as she was asleep and she looked around and she saw nails, and so she tried to get it underneath the shrinking box and she sighed in relief when she got it to stop.
She then woke up and she screamed partly and she breathed heavily. Although, they ignored that part. And she was now sitting with Rue, as she was afraid and she hugged her. One of Ayano's fears, was that Rue was taken from her. That she would die, and it'd be all her fault.
"Aya, can you sing?" Rue asked since she was always comforted by that.
Ayano nodded her head. "There's a place, out there, for us, more than just a prayer, or anything you've ever dreamed of, so when you feel like giving up, cause you don't fit in down here, fear is crashing in, close your eyes and take my hand." She sang quietly to the little girl who soon fell asleep.
Rue was seven years old, and Aya had made it her own personal mission to make sure that she was safe. Even if it meant she had to sacrifice herself. Eventually, Ayano had fallen asleep, too.
In the morning, it was the same routine of waking up. Only, they were separated. And Ayano went from being the worst, to one of the best in her group.
It was different, it changed. Why had it changed? Why did it need to change? She was thinking about how scared Rue would be.
She was such a sweet little girl. She would sleep next to Aya cause they'd both get scared at night, so they wouldn't be alone. And they taught each other what they knew. Rue taught her how to gather things, and Aya taught Rue how to hunt.
Since, around there, if you didn't hunt it and kill it yourself, you usually didn't eat at all.
Ayano was injected with something to her neck and she winced since it hurt a lot. She then was void of emotion on her face.
Inwardly she was freaking out, why couldn't she control her actions? Why wasn't her brain obeying her? She had no idea.
Rue's POV
She was looking for Aya when they got separated and she was getting scared. They were in a bigger arena, and they were dropped alone and they got separated.
Where did Ayano, go? Did they take her? Cause she didn't see half of the other people in the program, either.
She got worried, and she snuck to the control area, and when she saw Ayano on a table with straps, she ran up to her and she cut part of it off her arm, and she flinched when she saw that Aya had grabbed her arm.
Ayano's POV
Aya could see what she was doing when she grabbed her best friend's wrist cutting off the other rope and she picked up the little girl and she backed her up to the wall.
She saw what she was doing, but she couldn't stop! She couldn't stop! She was trying, and she was fighting to stop, but something in her mind wouldn't let her do so. She dodged when Rue fought back and she kept an eye on her.
She wanted to stop, but something had been preventing her from doing so. After she had the girl on the ground, bleeding from the nose since she was slammed a couple times and thrown.
Rue's POV
Rue didn't know what was going on. "Aya! Aya it's me, it's Rue, we're friends! Fight it, Ayano figh—" She started then she screamed when she got head-locked by her and she couldn't move.
"Aya, fight it! You have to fight it!" She exclaimed as she was being held by the head by the strongest one in their class.
Dimitri came and grinned. "Fascinating, isn't it? That thoughts, emotions, everything that we think makes a person, all wiped away by chemistry. She can't hear you, by the way." He told the brat.
Ayano's POV
She didn't want to do this! Rue didn't deserve this! She was trying to fight it. Then, she had a bow and arrow and she had her against the wall. She had it aimed for the little girl's chest, ready to shoot. She tried fighting it, and she wanted to so bad.
She didn't want Rue to die! She was supposed to live! She was supposed to be the one to make it home!
But before she pull the trigger, they made her go outside with the girl. And there, she looked at her friend, the best friend that she had there, and she pulled back the arrow with the bow, as she looked at her.
Rue's POV
Rue found out that it wasn't Aya's fault. She was being controlled, and there was nothing neither of them could do. "It's okay, Aya. It's okay. I'm not in pain, anymore. It's okay." She told the young Japanese girl that had been her best friend.
She had some tears coming down her dark cheeks, coming from her dark brown eyes. "It's okay." She told her again quietly as she closed her eyes.
Ayano's POV
She was sobbing on the inside, and with the serum wearing off now, she had some tears shown in her eyes.
But, she still couldn't control her actions. And so, with her there, Ayano let go of the arrow, shooting her in the heart, killing her.
When the serum was released only after she killed her best friend. She heard gunshots in the background, and she had some tears already coming from her cheeks as she held Rue's dead body as she sobbed. "I'm sorry, i'm sorry! Why did I do that!" She exclaimed as she sobbed into her friend's chest as she was very much hurt emotionally right now.
When she heard more shooting, she looked over as she hugged Rue and she didn't know what to do. "Stop! Stop." She shouted even though they couldn't hear her due to being so far, and her sobbing. "Why did I do that?" She asked then she sniffed.
She wanted to save her, she tried everything in her power, too, but she couldn't. And she was regretting it everyday.
