Chapter 25
Hey, y'all! I found some time this week to write a chapter, and it's quite lengthy. Anyway, hope you enjoy!
~Peeta's POV~
I open my eyes to see Katniss snuggled in my chest. I smile, but it soon falls when she pushes me away and begins to cry. I go to reach for her, but she opens her eyes and places her hand upon her chest. She pulls her hand away and looks at it, bewildered. I get worried and ask her, "Are you okay?"
I reach for her, but she pulls away. She says something, but I don't hear anything except for an unclear mumble. She stands up and runs out of the room. After snapping out of my daze I go to chase after Katniss, but get my leg tangled in the sheet and fall off the bed. I hear my front door close as I'm picking myself up off the floor. I quickly change into jeans and a t-shirt, then throw on sneakers as I exit my house. I look around the Victors Village to see Katniss no where in sight. I curse under my breath and head back inside to grab a jacket.
I jog over to Katniss's house to ask Cinna where she went. No one answers so I assume no one is home. Not wanting to waste time I head over to Haymitch's house to find him asleep on his couch. I wake him up and ask him where Katniss went.
"How would I know?"
"Because she trusts you, and Cinna isn't home."
"Forest," he mumbles, falling back asleep. I roll my eyes and go back home. When I enter my house I find another jacket of mine and a flashlight. After getting past the meadow and fence, I walk to the forest, hoping that I don't get lost.
~Katniss' POV~
I wake up shivering, the night becoming colder by the minute. I go to start another fire and notice there is only a few logs left. I put them into the dying embers and re-light the fire. After sitting back down in front of the fire I make a mental note to get more logs. I stare into fire, watching how the flames slowly engulf and burn the wood. Watching the fire makes me think of my past. How I, the girl on fire, destroyed practically everything in my path. I guess I lived up to my name by killing so many innocent lives and destroying so many homes.
I'm snapped out of my pessimistic thoughts by the sound of my name. I assumed it was Haymitch, probably coming to tell me that Peeta has left me for Delly, but when I listen closely it sounds almost exactly like Peeta. This gets my attention, so I go outside the cottage and see a distressed and dirty Peeta.
"Katniss!" He yells running towards me, excitement clear in his face. Surprised, I stand in place, frozen. When Peeta reaches me I see tears filling his eyes and streaming down his face. At this sight, tears well up in my eyes also. He pulls me in for a hug and presses me against his chest while sobbing on my shoulder. The warm touch of his tears on my neck awakens me from my stupor. I wrap my arms around his waist, but pull away.
"What's wrong," Peeta asks, reluctantly releasing me from his grip.
"I-I'm sorry, it's just that-that-"
"That what?"
"You deserve better, who would want a damaged seam girl? No one wants me. You should go find someone better, probably Delly," I say weakly, shattering my own heart in the process.
"Now why would I do that?" Peeta asks, getting slightly angry.
"Because," I whisper.
As I turn away, he lightly grabs my wrist and says, "I don't want Delly. Why would I when I have the woman of my dreams standing in front of me?"
"I-I don't know," I stammer. His arms wrap around me again, but this time I don't push away. I begin to shiver from the cold, but Peeta hands me a jacket I didn't see. I nod in thanks and lead him into the cabin. We sit in front of the fire, side by side, enjoying each others company.
"It was terrible," I say, breaking the silence and earning a confused look from Peeta.
"My nightmare, it was terrible," I repeat.
Peeta's arms wrap around me and I continue, "You woke up and I followed you downstairs. Then when you went to get something to eat, I-I wrapped my arms around your waist, then you thought I was D-Delly."
I begin to breakdown and Peeta tells me I don't have to continue, but I do anyway.
"Then when you saw it was me, you-you," I take a deep breath before finishing, "You went hijacked and attacked me. You tackled me to the ground and blamed me for not knowing where Delly was, then you plunged a knife through my heart."
"Oh, I'm so sorry," Peeta mumbles into my ear while hugging me.
"That's not the worse part," I whisper.
"It's not?" I shake my head.
"The worse part was that you and Delly were...married," I cry into his chest. He's speechless as he rocks me back and forth, trying to calm me down.
"I love you. Always have, always will," he declares, pulling away to wipe my tears with his thumbs. I give him a small smile and bury my face back into his chest as he wraps his arms around my frail body once more.
So, whatcha think? Tell me in the comments below!
