Chapter Twelve
The next morning I woke up refreshed and healthy and felt like I could run a marathon. Well, maybe not that. But certainly better than yesterday. I lay in my bed for less than a minute and opened the door. I was about to go downstairs when I heard talking. I didn't want to eavesdrop, but what can you do?
"You gotta tell her mate," Brian said.
"No I don't," Angus answered.
"You can't deny it anymore, we all know it's true."
"It is true, I'm not denying it anymore it hurts too much. But as true as it is, I can't bring myself to tell her."
"Just go upstairs-"
"That's the worst way! Look Brian, I'm married for a bunch of reasons. Hannah knows there's no more of whatever we used to be-"
"She sure does. She's pointed it out over and over this whole group of weeks-"
"And I'm sure she feels the same way about all of this."
I'm sure she feels the same way she has in the seventies," Brian said. There was a bit of silence till Angus spoke again.
"There's probably someone else anyway and she's trying to forget about me."
"Like you're trying to forget about her. Look Ang, you can't possibly have gone two months in the seventies and now however long without telling her." More silence.
"I did tell her. Once."
"What'd she say?"
"She was asleep." Brian sighed. Angus paused for a bit. "Wait, there was the time I first admitted how I felt but that hardly counts."
"You've been ignorin' this the same way you've been ignorin' Bon's dea-"
"I have not been ignoring it! Just-leave him out of this damn business." Silence.
"You gotta tell her mate," Brian said again. I heard Angus sigh before he spoke.
"I know." I saw him coming in my direction so I ran to my room and held the door against that little clicker thing that keeps it closed. As soon as I heard footsteps on the stairs I opened the door and pretended to come out for the first time. He headed for his room then stopped when he saw me.
There was that look. Sadness almost, an aching feeling to tell someone a secret. But refusal pushing it aside. We stared at each other for a while before he slowly looked away, stepped into his room and closed the door.
