Chapter Sixteen
I woke up to the sound of yelling. Big surprise, Malcolm must be home. Cliff and Phil had come home too. I felt kind of bad for Angus, getting yelled at by four other guys. Though something tells me Malcolm did most of the yelling. Two voices were getting louder along with footsteps coming up the stairs. "...just looking out for ya' Ang, you could try to be a little appreciative. Just pretend for God's sake!" My door opened and Angus closed it after him. He sat on the floor and simply lit a cigarette. It seems he wanted to get away from Malcolm so he just picked a room to hide in. He surely didn't mean to pick mine. I quietly stared at him not wanting him to know I was there. But after sitting there a while he looked up at me. Just stared. And I stared right back. It was too late to leave now. Without taking my eyes off his I got out of bed, walked over, and sat next to him.
"You okay?" He didn't answer. "You didn't mean to come in here did you?" He sighed. "You can leave if you want, I don't mind."
"Not with them all on my case like that," he said inhaling the smoke. "'ve had enough of that."
"Well you can always stay here then. I won't yell at you." I didn't. Neither one of us spoke. We just sat in silence, sat together.
Malcolm stomped back downstairs to the living room. "Well that's it then. The boy won't talk."
"He go pout in his room again?" Phil asked.
"No, he's locked himself in Hannah's room."
"Uh oh," Cliff said.
"Was probably an accident," Brian said. "He seems to have been pretty finicky with her as of late."
"No, not Angus," Malcolm said. Brian nodded. "He was the most excited to see her again, they were inseparable."
"He can't be completely stressed about the album," Cliff said. "We all are, and none of us drunk ourselves into a doozy. If you ask me, something happened between those two."
"But even Hannah herself doesn't know what's wrong with him so they couldn't have gotten into a disagreement," Brian pointed out.
"She's probably involved some way though," Phil said.
"I just can't imagine my brother actin' like this," Malcolm said. "What would drive him over the edge like that?"
"He needs to man up and tell her he loves her," said Cliff smiling, almost joking but not quite.
"That's for sure, but that wouldn't set him off would it?"
"Not if he wasn't married no," Cliff answered. "A little nervous maybe."
"He knows nothing would happen even if she felt the same. So he's got nothing to lose if she doesn't," Phil said.
"It amazes me how we managed to end up here again," said Malcolm. "I'm sure you remember Phil?"
"Hell yes. Little bugger wouldn't admit it for weeks. Nearly got her killed." Malcolm shook his head.
"Never did like that Lucy. He liked her when we moved to Australia. She left him and only came back when he got famous."
"Well Hannah's a time traveler. She left once, she'll leave again," Brian explained. "Prolly doesn't want to tell her if she'll only leave with his feelings."
"Which is why he should tell her, might never see her again," Phil said.
"You're damn right," Brian agreed. "Tried to tell him a while ago."
"But if she's telling the truth, if she really is from the future," Cliff said. "he's gotta be like, a hundred years older than her."
"Only about, forty four," said Malcolm. "Course that doesn't make it any less weird."
"So let's see. He's married, forty four years older, potentially has kids at this point, and lives across the globe," said Phil. "I'd drink myself out too."
"That sucks balls," Malcolm said. "Loving somebody that much but it'll never happen."
"Why can't she just stay then?" Cliff asked.
"He's not a divorce kinda guy. He loves Ellen anyway," Malcolm answered.
"Yeah mate, you heard 'em upstairs," Phil laughed. "Hannah wouldn't even do that."
"I don't think he'd mind honestly. He told me before Christmas he was over her but that's obviously not true. Tried to forget about her but-guess he couldn't do it."
"Try as he might..."
"I gotta get him outta the house. With Hannah too."
"We did that five years ago," Phil said.
"Yeah, but I wouldn't leave this time. I'd stay with them," Malcolm explained.
"And do what?"
"Just take a walk. Get him some fresh air. Hannah too, she hasn't gotten much not knowing where to go."
"Wonder how it's goin' up there," Brian questioned.
"Think they're doin' something naughty?" laughed Phil.
"Not Hannah, trust me," Malcolm said.
"I don't know Mal, when Ang wants something, he gets it," Cliff joked along.
"Then I hope he wants a good kick in the balls, 'cause that's what she'd give him." The door opened and closed again.
"Here someone comes," Brian murmured. Angus walked down the stairs with a new cigarette in hand.
"Ooh, someone had a little fun," Phil laughed earning a sideways glare from Angus.
"Don't start with me Rudd."
"You came out of a girl's room with a cigarette, what am I supposed to think?"
"Keep your bloody thoughts to yourself that's what."
"Bet she liked it," Phil taunted.
"Shove off!"
"What? Hannah can fend for herself, and you can call her down once she's finished gettin' dressed." Angus turned and reached out for him but Malcolm stepped between them.
"That's enough of that Phil," Malcolm scolded.
"Just teasin' him mate."
"Leave Hannah the fuck alone," Angus growled back at him then continued walking to the kitchen.
"Hey Ang! How would you like to come on a walk?" Malcolm asked.
"A walk?" Malcolm nodded. "What's in it for me?"
"Hannah'll be there." Angus dropped the plastic bottle he was holding and hurried to pick it up again. "So tomorrow afternoon?"
Malcolm invited me to come on a walk with him and Angus. It was fabulous to get outside in the fresh air and it was good for Angus. Neither one seemed to be as mad as they were yesterday which was a relief. Though our walk was interrupted a few times from people coming up and talking to them. I keep forgetting they're famous. I've been such good friends with them, the whole AC/DC thing is a blur. Anytime someone with a camera came around I left for more reasons than just being camera shy.
Eventually a crowd of people came to talk with them so I went to get a drink at a water fountain. The water wasn't all that good but what can you do? I sat at a picnic table and waited for the crowd to leave. They finally did and the happy faces the boys put on were gone.
"So, how are we all doing?" Malcolm sat across from me and looked at Angus who was next to me. Angus didn't answer so Malcolm looked at me.
"I'm alright Mal, how about yourself?" I answered with a smile. He smiled back.
"Good as I'll ever be." Angus folded his hands across the table. "And how are you Ang?"
"'M fine," he mumbled.
"Good to get out in the fresh air, ain't it?"
"Sure is."
"No troubles, no worries, and all this open space." Malcolm opened his arms to gesture around him.
"Yep."
"I mean, you have all this attention being famous and all, but it's worth it." Angus nodded. "We still famous in the future Hannah?"
"As long as this earth's still spinning you guys will be famous." Malcolm smiled.
"That's great. Ya' hear that Angus?"
"Yeah. It's great." Malcolm looked around.
"Sure is quiet and peaceful. Could write songs out here. You ever write songs Hannah?"
"I've tried, not my strong suit. Much better at writing books."
"Sounds hard. Is it?"
"Excruciating. But fun."
"That's good." A silence fell among us. Not an awkward silence, but a sincere silence. "Anxious to get back home?" He asked me looking at Angus. Angus shifted in his seat.
"Not too much, it hasn't been very long. I could stay a while longer." Malcolm smirked still looking at his brother.
"That's even better, isn't it Angus?"
"Yeah," he nodded.
"Quiet today, aren't you?" Angus shrugged.
"Not really."
"Haven't said much."
"Thanks Mal, I know what quiet means."
"Then you know you're livin' proof."
"Not really," Angus repeated.
"Hannah would agree, right?"
"I'm not really one to talk Malcolm," I said smiling.
"But you would agree Angus is quiet today, yes?"
"Maybe, but maybe he feels like being quiet today. I do all the time."
"Hmm," Malcolm hummed. "Fair enough."
