Chapter Nine
Christmas songs played on the old record that slowly woke me up. I don't remember falling asleep in my bed but seeing as I was still dressed someone must have carried me up. The clock on the wall read 12:07. Crap, I've slept too long. I changed into a different shirt and headed downstairs. "Good afternoon, Sleeping Beauty. I'd thought you'd never wake up," a voice called. Linda stood in her bathrobe in the kitchen stirring her coffee.
"More like Sleeping Beast," I laughed earning one from her as well.
"Merry Christmas as well. Boys left a while ago. Thought about waking you up so you could say goodbye but there wasn't really a reason to. You'll see them again anyway."
"Hopefully," I muttered.
"Brian and Angus will be back shortly. Speaking of..." Linda tilted her head in my direction and gave me a knowing look.
"What?" I asked backing from her gaze.
"You know perfectly well what. You came here once in the seventies and Angus couldn't stop talking about it. You sure left an impression on him you did." I wrung my hands together.
"I don't see why, I'd think he would have forgotten me by now, five years later."
"I fail to see how anyone could forget a time traveler." I smiled a little. "Especially one that's stolen your heart," she finished walking by me to the living room. I followed her and the Christmas music got louder. The couch fabric brushed against my bare feet.
"I haven't stolen anyone's heart. If I did he got it back and gave it to someone else."
"Maybe," she said resting her feet on the coffee table. "But that's not what Ellen says."
"And what did she say?" I asked with a concerned look. Linda chuckled.
"Oh something about being married to a man who has a crush on someone else." I stood up from the couch in a flash.
"That's not-I can't, stay here knowing that, I didn't mean to-"
"It's okay dear, her words not his. She was joking when she said it anyway. Probably doesn't mean anything." I backed up towards the door.
"Never mind that, I'd feel horrible-no, I feel horrible now that I'm in the way of things-"
"Love you're not in the way of things." I shook my head and turned to open the door. Angus stood on the other side of it holding keys where the key hole was supposed to be.
"Perfect timing love," he said smiling. "Where are you headed off to?" I bit my lip and looked behind me. Linda nodded her head in my direction. Looking back at his grin I shuffled my foot.
"I was, just, uh-going to-"
"Good afternoon everybody and a merry Christmas too," Ellen said walking out of the bathroom from the shower. Saving my life from explanation. She walked over to us and kissed Angus. Her husband. Not just friendly greetings anymore and I knew that. He knew that. Hopefully, or this could be a Christmas gone wrong.
"Afternoon lovely, nice shower, yes?" Angus asked her coming inside. "Sorry I couldn't be there with ya'." Linda and I both turned our heads and gagged.
"Oh sod off you two," Ellen giggled following her husband to the living room. "Oh Angus, we still need to go to the..." I backed out of the doorway, their conversation more and more inaudible. When I was sure I had the chance I spoke.
"Well I guess I'd better be going then."
"Where are you going, I'll come with you," Angus said turning to me. I held up my hand.
"That's fine, I was just going for a small walk that's all."
"Well you don't know the area, I can show you."
"It's just around the block, and I don't want you two to miss your uh, event."
"It's okay Hannah, we won't be going for weeks," Ellen said smiling at me.
"No, I don't want to be in the way, I'll be back before you know it." I gave them a small smile hoping they'd understand.
"Okay then," Angus said after a while putting his hands in his pockets. I waved them goodbye and closed the door behind me. Brian closed the door to his car and smiled when he saw me.
"Afternoon lass, where you off to?"
"I was just going for a walk around the block."
"Can I come with ya' then? Angus has been gettin' on me about pickin' up his milk." His milk. Oh Angus and your milk.
"Are any stores open on Christmas?" I asked.
"No idea. But it won't hurt to try." I start walking down the sidewalk allowing him to follow. "'M a little surprised Angus didn't want to join ya'," he said after a while.
"I think he did, but I didn't want to get in the way," I explained.
"Why would you be in the way? He's the one taggin' along."
"In the way of... you know, him and Ellen." Brian laughed a little.
"You wouldn't get in the way, he's married to her."
"I know, but everyone is saying he still has this thing..."
"Thing or no thing he can spend time with his wife any day. You however aren't going to be here forever."
"But Ellen's leaving soon-"
"And she'll come back. You, might not." I stayed quiet the rest of the way. He had a point and I felt bad for ditching Angus. Even Ellen thought it okay for him to go.
We found a puny shack of a store around the block. The air conditioner blessed us inside from the heat everywhere else. The milk aisle was even better with all the refrigerators. "All righty, plain or chocolate?" Brian asked.
"Both," we laughed at the same time knowing how Angus is. We accomplished our mission and headed back out to the heat.
"Hope Angus doesn't mind 'evaporated' milk," Brian said holding one carton as I held the other. We made it home quickly to avoid too much heat in the dairy.
"Welcome back guys," Linda said on the bar stool. Angus came up to us.
"Where have you been?" he asked Brian.
"Out, gettin' yer milk for ya'." He took both cartons and headed for the fridge.
"You let him go with you?" he asked quietly. I lowered my head a bit.
"He asked to come for the milk, he would have come if you were there or not."
"You still told me no," he said still quiet.
"I'm sorry," I told him knowing it wasn't enough but I couldn't bring myself to say anything else. Angus shook his head and walked away to the kitchen. Now I felt like a complete jackass. He'd been upset time and time again, but now he looked genuinely hurt and a little mad.
Angus sulked to the kitchen. He didn't want to ignore Hannah anymore, but now she was ignoring him. Or at least blowing him off only to invite other people. Maybe she didn't want anything to do with him. Did he make her mad somehow? If he did or if she made him mad they made up pretty fast. Or she didn't like him anymore. Mal said she did but... maybe he was being childish. Oh why did he care? He was married, he had someone to take walks with anytime. But Hannah couldn't be around anytime, you never know what you have until it's gone. Until she's gone. Well okay then. If she didn't like him anymore, she didn't have to waste her time.
