Chapter 9

"Are you feeling better now?"

Hyunji looked up from the tissue she had been fiddling with in silence for the past few minutes and into the eyes that stared at her softly on the park bench, having patiently waited for her cries to calm, even offering a hug (which was very much surprising by the way) that helped her feel a bit better.

She swallowed the lump in her throat, eyes swollen and bloodshot and makeup pretty much wiped away at that point.

“Yes.”

Jungkook observed her features for a moment.

“Should we go home then?”

Home

It was odd to think that she would be living somewhere else now, but she finds the courage to nod her head slowly, chest feeling tight, but not wanting to sit there any longer. Seeing her agree, Jungkook stood up and she followed, making their way towards the car not too far away.

Once they make it to the hotel lobby, Hyunji spots a trash can near the elevators that they were walking towards, the package of the ice cream she previously had, in her grip as they walked side by side. Jungkook presses the button to call the elevator as she throws out the ice cream packaging, knowing very well that the reason they stopped at the gas station before coming to the hotel, wasn’t because they were low on fuel like he said they were. Rather, he showed up with a popsicle for her, and a pack of gum for himself, and she had a feeling it was because he was trying to make her feel better in some way.

And she truly appreciated his effort.

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened, allowing for a couple with a child to step out with their suitcases, and for Jungkook and Hyunji to then step in.

The doors close, and suddenly Hyunji feels a rush of anxiety.

It was going to be their first night together. And she had no idea what that entailed, whether he would try and initiate something or not.

A part of her was hoping he would.

She briefly glances up at Jungkook who had been silent for a bit now, watching the numbers on the screen go up with each floor that they passed.

It was one of those moments where she wished he had something to say, rather than them standing in silence, her nerves crawling up her back as a spark of excitement was ignited in the pit of her stomach.

The elevator doors open and Jungkook lets her walk out first, following her down the hall to their room.

“It was 501, right?” Hyunji asks as they slowly come to a stop in front of the said door, Jungkook humming a reply. She taps her phone to the lock, and the door beeps open, scanning the virtual card on her phone, and she opens the door, takes a step in and immediately comes to a stop, Jungkook running into her from behind.

“What’s wrong-Holy shit.”

Both are staring into their new home with parted lips and wide eyes, rose petals scattered along the floor and bed, with red balloons shaped into hearts floating on either side of the bed, some with congratulations written elegantly on them.

Hyunji steps further into the room, her hand now covering her mouth as she admires the romantic atmosphere that definitely wasn’t there previously.

She catches the bottle of champagne in an ice bucket resting on the coffee table by the couch, with a small cake right next to it.

Surprised was an understatement.

“Jungkook,” she finally finds her voice as she turns back to him, “You did this?”

Her husband gulps, eyes wide in a sudden panic.

“Um, yes, of course I did.”

And he swears he catches her eyes sparkling up at him.

“You really didn’t have to.” she says softly, and he can make out the hint of shyness, and he knows he made the right decision in lying.

He grins this time, fixing his composure.

“Well, we got married, so I thought it was only right.”

“Thank you, I really appreciate it.”

“Any time, Ji.” Jungkook smiles at her and watches as she turns to admire the room once more and his eyes catch small packages laid out on the night stand by the bed. Stepping towards them curiously, he takes one into his hand and reads the label.

His eyes widened.

“What are you looking at?” a curious voice asks from behind him as he hears Hyunji’s steps near him, and he’s quick to block her view and hold the one in his hand behind him.

“Nothing.”

Hyunji doesn’t look pleased with his answer, especially with the panic written along his features.

“Jungkook.”

“There’s nothing here Ji-” he manages to say before she’s quickly reaching behind him to the packages on the nightstand and taking one.

Jungkook sighs, noticing the heat reach her cheeks the moment she gets to read the label.

“C-condoms?”

Her eyes are wide as she glances up at him, and he can do nothing but slowly nod, embarrassed.

He would have to get back at his hyung for this.

How could he just assume they were gonna have sex that night!

“Well, we agreed to use condoms, so I thought it would be best to keep some on hand until we decided to… you know…” Jungkook looks away and rubs his nape in embarrassment.

Seokjin was so dead for putting him into a situation like this.

Hyunji nods silently, pink dusting her cheeks.

“R-right.”

She returns the small package, which he takes.

“I guess I’ll cut us some cake,”

“Sure,” he responds quickly, and shoves the package of condoms into the drawer of the nightstand.

“Looking at them isn’t going to make you feel better.”

Hyunji looks up from her phone, sadness evident in her eyes as she finally shuts off her phone.

“I know.” she mutters.

Her parents had been messaging her nonstop, asking about where she was and to come back home immediately. There were slips of rude words she never thought her parents would use against her, and it all made her feel terrible.

She notices Jungkook move closer to her on the couch, looking into her eyes sympathetically.

“Don’t think about them, alright?”he says softly, and she does nothing but slowly nod, pursing her lips.

"It's easier said than done." Hyunji sighs and Jungkook can't help but feel bad, so he tries changing the subject.

"How about some champagne? Only if you drink of course." He begins, standing and picking up the bottle that was resting in the ice.

Having champagne wouldn't be Hyunji's first time, especially since her parents let her have a small amount during special occasions with them, so she was left nodding in response.

It was their wedding night, and although it wasn’t how she had imagined she would be getting married, she didn’t see the problem with having a single drink.

Jungkook opens the bottle, bracing himself at first while angling the bottle away from the both of them, and releasing a grin of success when not even a single drop spills out.

He pours the golden liquid into the two glasses out next to the ice bucket and hands Hyunji her drink first before grabbing his and settling down next to her.

They clink their drinks with smiles spread across their lips before finally taking a sip and settling into a comfortable silence.

“It’s going to take a while to clean this all up,” Jungkook mutters out first, referring to the decorations scattered around their new home, and Hyunji follows his gaze, nodding in agreement.

“I volunteer to do the dishes,”

Jungkook scoffs, squinting at her playfully.

“There’s barely any dishes to clean.” he answers, referring to the two plates and forks they used for the cake, along with their champagne glasses, but Hyunji just grins, shrugging her shoulders.

“Your loss.”

“Picking up the rose petals will take ages!” he groaned and Hyunji couldn't help but giggle.

“You should have thought of that before scattering them everywhere.”

“I didn’t-”

Jungkook cuts himself off and almost pouts while leaning back onto the couch. He couldn’t expose that he had nothing to do with the romantic atmosphere his older brother had clearly created for them.

“Fine.” he grumbles, although he honestly doesn’t care too much except for the amusement in Hyunji’s eyes that he knew he was the reason for. He wanted to get her mind off things, and he was glad to see it was working. At least until her attention was brought back to her phone, a frown curved at her lips as she stared at the screen.

Jungkook sets his finished glass down, moving closer.

"They won't stop," he heard her mutter softly, the hurt in her eyes difficult to hide and in a way it made him feel guilty.

Like all of this was his fault, and that maybe if he had not dragged her into it, at least she wouldn't be hurting like this.

But had to remind himself that it wasn't just his decision too, but hers as well. He had given her multiple opportunities to back out, and although he would secretly feel disappointed in that case, he didn't want to force her into anything she genuinely didn't want to do.

So he had to remind himself the reason they were doing this in the first place.

Hyunji's breath had caught in her throat the moment she felt her chin tilted towards him, his other free hand gently taking her phone out of her hands and placing it on the coffee table. Her eyes locked with his ebony deapths already gazing into hers with a look she couldn't quite decipher.

"Focus on me instead, alright? Looking at them isn't going to make you feel any better." His voice was gentle, and the close proximity had her heart skip for a moment, but she found the courage to slowly nod and a small smile curved at the corners of his lips.

"Good."

Hyunji watches the way his eyes flicker away from her eyes and to her lips, glancing back up, almost as if asking for permission.

And so she nods her head, heart pounding in her chest.

This was it

The moment she had been waiting for all her life, even though it wasn't with the man she pictured it would be.

Jungkook's throat bobs before he begins leaning closer, making sure to give enough time for her to back out if she wanted to.

But fuck, he wanted to kiss her, and he knew it was partly from the tingle of alcohol in his system.

But this is also what they had gone through all the trouble for.

His nose brushes hers, their eyes now shut her body tingling with anticipation and just after one last breath, his lips met hers.
