Trials of the Dead
It's okay to be saved once in a while too.
Evangeline picked Percy's mind on the walk. She seemed to realize she had a lot of questions for Percy, and a good part of it he knew was an interrogation. Interrogating Percy to make sure he was good for Peter. That knowledge is why he didn't mind explaining to her, he felt he owed it to her. Of course, her first questions had been about the Iris Message and how Percy was even in the Underworld in the first place. He offered the explanation of his demi-godliness and such, but then he realized he had a question for her. "How is it that you believe in the Greek Afterlife and ended up in Elysium?" It was then that Evangeline admitted to him that she was of Greek descent and grew up on the stories of ancestors being heroes going to Elysium, knowing her whole life she was going to die young from Jansky Bielschowsky disease she chose to believe in the greek deities her family believed in. Percy didn't share with her, but in the back of his mind he realized she was probably the direct descendant of a demigod. She was probably the granddaughter of a god or goddess. In fact, Evangeline's reaction, or lack thereof made Percy suspect that she already knew about the gods. Evangeline didn't react too terribly to the knowledge and confirmation that mortals shared their world with Greek gods, Norse gods, Egyptian gods, and probably a lot more, Percy admitted. He figured her reaction being so calm was well due to the fact that in her past life she had lived in a tower full of superheroes and a Norse god, but he still suspected she knew more than she was letting on.
She was fun to be around, Percy decided, and he was seeing why she had been Peter's best friend. It made sense, someone that knows about his secret superhero life that he can rely on and confide in. Not to mention she was a SHIELD Agent. Percy was glad that his brief time with Peter and the Avengers had allowed him to read (or attempt to read) Evangeline's super top secret memoir that Peter had written. Apparently, according to a bashful Peter, Percy was the inspiration for Peter to share his memories with Evangeline, even if they would remain under lock and key for eternity, at least her memory could never truly die off. Not long after they had met, Peter began to write the memoir under strict SHIELD guidelines. Percy literally didn't know about it for six years, but he was glad now that he had some more insight to the girl walking in pace with him towards the Lord of the Dead.
The walk to the palace through the Fields of Asphodel was a distant memory now. Percy and Evangeline had paid their respects to Hades and now presented their argument. Or begged their claim, however you chose to look at it. Evangeline argued that yes, Natasha had committed some atrocities, (who hasn't?) but she had literally devoted her life to the protection of others. The five years after the snap, all she did was search for a solution. She gave her life so that her best friend, Clint Barton could live and make it back to his family after the world was saved. At the end of the day, Natasha was a hero, one who deserved the best the afterlife could offer.
Peter's memoir of Evangeline didn't do justice to how compelling this dead 16 year old girl was. Who knows, maybe in life she hadn't been as compelling as she was now. Maybe death had given her some time to read some books on the subject. Percy could see Hades thinking it over in his head, he could see how much this kid had touched Persephone's heartstrings too.
Finally Hades waved a hand in a gesture that reminded Percy too much of Dionysus, lazily, not defeat, but in a "whatever, you can have your way" gesture. He announced that Natasha Romanoff would be allowed to go forth into Elysium. Her spirit appeared beside Evangeline, no doubt having been in a voided limbo for who knows how long, considering she had been dead for a while, she seemed rather disoriented. Seeing Evangeline seemed to cement something inside of her and after a moment the former assassin broke into a girl. The two ladies embraced before Natasha released and looked around the Throne Room. No doubt she didn't see what Percy saw. As far as he was concerned, she was an enhanced mortal with, again, an interesting view of the afterlife.
Percy was no longer paying attention to the two ladies, who were exchanging quiet words as Natasha took in the scene. He directed his attention back at Hades, "Lord Hades, We have another inquiry, the mortal Tony Stark, the hero Iron Man. Where is he?"
Hades' attention was also on Evangeline and Natasha, but was now directed at Percy, "As you know, Anthony Stark has an interesting perception of the afterlife. I think you will be pleased to know however that he is in his version of the afterlife, watching over his loved ones from what he can only believe to be Heaven."
Percy was puzzled, "Is that a part of Elysium?" He asked tentatively. He did not want to make his uncle angry, but he was not sure what he meant.
To his surprise, Hades laughed, "Yes and no. It all has to do with what he believes and sees. To his knowledge, he is in a specter-like state, watching over the world, watching over his children and his life, silently judging their decisions. These two," he indicated to Evangeline and Natasha, who were once again listening to the God of Death,"would, and are more than able to watch with him and see and interact with him. To his knowledge he's in the sky. I cannot say whether that's true or not, because to him, that's the truth, but really he's in Elysium. His spirit is in Elysium. That's where he's been."
Once again, Percy could feel Evangeline's emotions without looking at, or interacting with her. Her relief felt like bubbles on a hot summer day.
Natasha spoke up now, "May we see him, sir?" She knelt accordingly. Hades smiled again and was about to whisk the ghostly ladies away with another wave of his hand.
Evangeline turned back to Percy, her smile was probably the brightest thing Percy had ever seen in the Underworld. "Thank you Percy," her words were so strongly genuine Percy felt rocked to his core, "But if you ever hurt Peter, I'll raise Hell." Her eyes sparkled one last time and the two ladies were gone in a wisp.
"Is that all?" Hades was staring at Percy, but he seemed to know the answer and was now waiting to hear the demigod's request.
Percy took the silence as permission to voice his last request, "I was wondering-"
"You'll have to get Zeus' permission." was the only answer Percy got. Looks like it's time to go to Olympus.
