The Headband
Hi-ya people! How is everyone doing?
Zuko: I think they're fine. Can we get on with the story?
But of course, you'll enjoy this chapter very much Zuko.
Zuko:... Huh?
...
After a few hours of flying toward the Fire nation undetected thanks to Aang and Katara bending a cloud to cover them. As they flew over the smaller island Aang spoke up.
"Hey I see a cave down there!" he shouted. Only to immediately be shushed by Sokka. As Zuko landed Sokka leaped from Appa to search the area.
"Great job with the cloud camo but next time lets be the cloud that keeps its mouth shut," Sokka said surveying the area.
"Yeah wouldn't want a bird to hearing us chatter up there and turn us in," Toph said with a sarcastic tone.
"Hey we're in enemy territory, these are enemy birds," Sokka said pointing up only to have one perch itself on top of his head in a comedic manner.
"Actually the same birds live in the Earth kingdom as well," Zuko said as everyone was laughing at Sokka's expense.
"Come on we're burning daylight," Zuko said as he walked pass Sokka.
"Oh and Sokka leave the enemy bird here."
After entering the cave Zuko took out his map to see what island they were on. As he was looking over the map he heard Sokka talking about something that has to do with the cave he wasn't paying attention.
"Zuko?" he heard someone asked. He turned to see all of them leaving the cave.
"We're going to go get some disguises to hide out," Aang said. Zuko nodded and followed them out.
...
On the way to town they came across a clothes line unattended.
"Are you guys sure about this?" Aang asked.
"These are other peoples clothes-" he started but was cut off by Katara.
"I call the silk robe!" she shouted eagerly. Zuko watched as she ran toward the clothes.
' I think Katara might be a kleptomaniac,' the inner voice said.
' We're stage an intervention later right now just let them do what they want,' he thought to himself.
"Hey Zuko aren't you going to get some clothes for you?" Aang asked as he brought the clothes back. Zuko shook his head.
"It's best if I stay out of towns as much as possible."
"Why?" Aang asked with a confuse look etched upon his face. Zuko sighed.
"I guess you weren't listening earlier. Now that you're dead the fire nation has shifted all of the focus to me. So my face is most likely plastered all over the towns," Zuko explained.
"Well the least you could do is get a new black tunic, I mean you did rip the sleeve off to cover your wounds," Sokka said coming up with his own clothes. Zuko shrugged.
"I suppose, but you guys are going to have to get some in town for me then."
After everyone got dress they were about to leave for town. Zuko took out the money pouch and was about to hand it to Sokka but at the last minute gave it to Katara.
"Hey why does she get to handle the money?" Sokka whined. Zuko looked back at them.
"Because Aang doesn't get the money system, Toph would just gamble it all away, and you would probably waste it on meat and stupid things we don't need."
Sokka raised his hand about to retort that response but decided against it. As they we're about to leave Zuko stopped Aang.
"Now Aang I know you were here a hundred years ago so I'm just going to tell you this now. Things changed so act normal okay?" Zuko said. Aang just smiled and yelled. "Flameyo Hotman!" while running off. Zuko just stood there and smacked his forehead as his hand slowly slid down his face.
"He's going to get them in trouble, I can already tell."
...
So as the hours went by Zuko spent the time meditating, training and planning their next move even though he heard Sokka talk about some kind of schedule. And then there was that other thing he was working on. Zuko decided to go back to meditating in front of the fire he built. After a few short breaths he was completely calm.
' You know you can tell them,' the voice said. Zuko remained quiet.
' Fine I won't pester you about this,' the voice said. Zuko was about to say something but was interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming from the entrance. Zuko turned to see Sokka, Katara and Toph but no sight of Aang.
"Where's Aang?" he asked.
"We thought he was here!" Sokka shouted. Zuko eyes widen.
"You guys lost him?"
"More like misplaced him," Sokka said as if asking a question. Zuko smacked his forehead.
"It hasn't even been a day and you already lost him in the Fire Nation."
"Maybe we should just wait for him. I'm sure he'll come back," Toph suggested. Zuko nodded.
"If he's not back by nightfall I'll go look for him."
Zuko turned around and started heading back into the cave.
"Oh Zuko we got your tunic," Katara said as she handed him the brown parcel.
"Thanks," he said as he open up the package.
"We also got you a new black cloak, figure it would be better than the red one," Katara said. Zuko nodded and went back to the fire.
...
Just as the sun was about to go down the rest of the gaang was getting worried. Zuko stood up abruptly.
"Alright I've waited long enough I'm going to go look for him."
Zuko went to his pack and grabbed his blue spirit mask and just as he was about to put it on he heard rock sliding from outside.
"Where have you been? We've been worried sick!" Katara yelled as Aang entered the cave.
"I got invited to play with some kids after school," he explained.
Sokka abruptly stood up.
"After what?" he shouted in disbelief. Aang looked back at Sokka.
"I enrolled in a Fire Nation school, and I'm going back tomorrow."
Sokka's eyes bulged out as he shouted, "Enrolled in what?" before falling down yet again.
Zuko just shook his head, ' This is going to be harder than I thought.'
After Aang cleaned off the soot from his uniform he went into detail about his day at the school as they all sat around the fire.
"Aang, I'm trying to be mature and not immediately shoot down your idea, but it sounds really terrible," Sokka explained.
"Yeah. We got our outfits. What do you need to go into school for?" Toph asked.
"Every minute I'm in that classroom, I'm learning new things about the Fire Nation. I already have a picture of Firelord Ozai," Aang said holding up a poster. Sokka took the poster and looked at the image then back to Zuko and kept doing that for a few seconds.
"Hey Zuko did anyone tell you that you look a lot like your father?" he asked holding the poster out towards him. Out of nowhere a small burst of fire pierced the left side of the pictures face creating a hole where his left eye should be. After noticing everyone glaring at him besides Zuko he put the picture down.
"I'll shut up now."
"Look Aang I know you want to learn about the nation and stuff but we have a job," Zuko started with Aang looking depressed.
"But I'm going to allow you to go to back to the school tomorrow," he said and Aang eyes looked up with happiness.
"But only for tomorrow because it's going to take some time to clear your record. So there'll be no trace of you when we leave."
"You got it Sifu Hotman," he shouted happily.
' That was nice of you, but what's the real reason you decided to let him stay?' the voice asked.
' I need to check some things out,' he thought to himself.
...
As Aang was in school the entirety of the day. Zuko made himself busy sharpening his blades and studying the map of the island to see the scope of the land. As the sun started to go down he made his move. Grabbing his mask and his swords he made his way to town.
He moved swiftly from rooftop to rooftop as he heads or the center of the town. As he scan the open area he found the building he was looking for. Making his way towards the building he sees two guards at the front and another two circling the building. Zuko smirked under the mask. Making his way to the west side of the building he climbed to an open window and entered. Looking around he could tell this was the office he was looking for. Heading over to the shelves filled with the files he was looking for he started his search. After an hour and a half he found everything he needed. Rolling up the scrolls and placing them inside his tunic he made his way out of the building.
' That was surprisingly easy,' Zuko thought to himself. As he made his way back toward the cave.
"Hey you!" Zuko heard a guard yell.
' Guess I spoke to soon,' he thought to himself. As one of the guards ran up to him Zuko quickly sidestepped him making the man run into a wall. The other guard pulled out his sword and charged at Zuko kicked the blade out of the man's hand and as he watch the sword soar through the air Zuko punched him in between the eyes knocking him out. Zuko looked at both of the knocked out guards.
' That was kind of disappointing,' he thought to himself. As he started the walk the sword that was in the air started its descent and just as Zuko was about to walk away the hilt of the blade made contact with his skull. Zuko hands immediately shot up to rub his head.
' Seriously of all the places it could have landed,' he thought angrily as he walked away.
...
As Zuko neared the cave he could hear noises coming from the entrance.
"Strange I must of hit my head harder than I thought cause I swear to Agni that I hear-" he said as he was slowly taking his mask off. Only to slam it back on when he notices the cave filled with children dancing. Zuko stood at the entrance of the cave, his mask covering the look of anger etched upon face. One of the children notices him.
"AH IT'S THE BLUE SPIRIT!" he screamed at the top of his voice. All the children look at him both in confusing and fear. Sokka and Toph were on the other side of the cave when they heard the yell.
"Oh shit we didn't tell Zuko about this. You think he's mad?" Sokka asked. Just then all the candles and fire in the cave grew hotter and larger.
"Yeah I think he's mad," Toph said. Zuko scanned the crowd to find the one person he knew was behind this. Luckily for him he came out quickly. Aang made his way to the front of the crowd to see Zuko in his mask looking angrily at him. Aang gulped as Zuko made his way to him.
"So Blue did you enjoy your walk?" Aang asked sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. Zuko grabbed the front of his shirt and lifted him off the ground and carried him toward the back where the other three are.
...
The kids stood there watching the legendary 'Blue Spirit' scolding Kuzon for reasons unknown. Not one of the kids could hear a word that was being said but could see all the arm movements that was being thrown around.
"Should we do something?" one of the kids asked.
"What are we going to do to a man who killed over a thousand men?" another asked.
"I heard that he eats the souls of the wicked men who crossed him," a girl said.
"I heard that he can disappear and reappear like the wind," a younger student said. With that said they focus back on the group seeing that the masked man was yelling and pointing at the man with the fake beard. After a few more minutes of a silent argument Kuzon came back,
"Sorry about that."
"Is he your dad or something?" one of the kids asked. Kuzon rubbed the back of his head,
"More of a big brother really. Now come on let me show you more dance moves!" he shouted.
...
Zuko stood near the back of the cave watching all the kids dance. While he was angry at first he was able to calm down for the moment but that wasn't going to stop him from continuing the argument later.
' Zuko look at Aang's foot,' the voice said.
' What about it?' Zuko thought to himself.
' It's loose. Loose foot. Footloose… Zuko I think we're on to something here,' the voice said excitingly. Zuko sigh as his hand smacked his forehead.
' Agni I'm too young for this,' he thought to himself. Just then he sees Aang running this way,
"Time to go," he said. Zuko just nodded and ran toward the back entrance to the cave as Aang collapsed it.
...
As they fly away on Appa they began talking once more.
"Way to go, dancy pants. I think you really did help those kids. You taught them to be free," Toph said.
"I don't know. It was just a dance party that's all," Aang stated.
"Well, that was some dance party, Aang," Katara said as she kisses Aang on the cheek causing him to blush.
"Flame-yo sir. Flame-yo," Sokka said casually.
"Ahem," everyone heard and turned their head to Zuko who still had his mask on. Aang started rubbing the back of his head.
"Sorry about that Zuko, but you weren't here when we talked about it and such-" Aang started but was cut off.
"200," Zuko said calmly. Everyone looked at him in confusion.
"200 what?" Aang asked.
"200 is the number of hotsquats you are going to do at the crack of dawn," Zuko said seriously.
"You're joking right," Aang said with a hesitant chuckle. Zuko just sat there with his mask on.
"He's dead serious," Toph added. Aang looked at the eyeless holes in the mask.
"Crap."
Little did they know that behind that mask of his Zuko was silently smirking.
...
