Civil War
Steve and I strode through an underpass, then jogged onto the runway, heading for the chopper Clint had found. An electro-disabler suddenly slammed onto the chopper and we looked up as Tony and Rhodey landed.
"Wow," Tony said, his helmet opening up, "it's so weird how you run into people at the airport." He looked at Rhodey. "Don't you think that's weird?"
"Definitely weird." Steve sighed.
"Hear me out, Tony," he said. "That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this." A man in a black cat suit jumped over a truck, and I furrowed my brow. Who the hell was this guy?
"Captain," he acknowledged. He looked at me. "Miss Stark." I gritted my teeth at both the name and the fact that he knew who I was but I didn't know him.
"Your highness." Steve nodded.
"Anyway," Tony said, "Ross gave me thirty-six hours to bring you in. That was twenty-four hours ago. Can you help a brother out?"
"You're after the wrong guy."
"Your judgment is askew. Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday."
"And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't." Nat walked up, watching us carefully.
"Steve," she said, "you know what's about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?" Tony rolled his eyes.
"All right," he said, "I've run out of patience." He cupped his hands around his mouth. "Underoos!" Suddenly, Steve's shield was pulled from his hands and our wrists were both bound as a figure in a red and blue suit landed on top of a trailer. "Nice job, kid." I tilted my head, watching him.
"Thanks," the boy said. He shrugged. "Well, I could've stuck the landing a little better. It's just the new suit- Well, it's nothing, Mr. Stark. It's-it's perfect. Thank you."
"Yeah, we don't really need to start a conversation."
"Okay. Cap-Captain. Big fan, I'm Spider-Man." I snorted.
"Yeah, we'll talk about it later. Just..."
"Hey, everyone."
"Good job." Steve smiled.
"You've been busy."
"And you've been a complete idiot. Dragging in Clint. 'Rescuing' the kids from a place she doesn't even want to leave, a safe place." I scoffed.
"Oh yeah?" I asked. "That's funny. Remind me, what happened last time you tried to speak my mind for me?" He sighed.
"Chris, I'm trying to keep-" He took a deep breath. "I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart." Steve shook his head.
"You did that when you signed." Tony sighed again.
"Alright," he said. "We're done. You're gonna turn Barnes over, you're gonna come with us, now! Because it's us! Or a squad of J-SOC guys with no compunction about being impolite. Come on." Sam spoke through the earpieces.
"We found it," he said. "Their Quinjet's in hanger five, north runway." Steve smiled, holding up his hands. Clint shot through the webs around his wrists, and I phased out of mine.
"Alright, Lang," I said. Spider Man looked down at his arm.
"Hey, guys," he said, "something-" He was cut off as Scott grew to his full size, flipping the younger boy and grabbing the shield before jumping down to us.
"I believe this is yours, Captain America," he said, handing Steve the shield. Steve looked at me.
"Chris, go!" I nodded and ran off, meeting Bucky and Sam in the terminal.
"Hey, Chris," Sam said. "Nice of you to join us." I rolled my eyes.
"Shut up, Wilson," I said. "I can outrun you any day." We looked up as Spider Man landed on the windows, sticking to the glass.
"What the hell is that?" Bucky asked. Sam shook his head.
"Everyone's got a gimmick now," he complained. I chuckled, but it ended when Spidey swung through the window and kicked Sam backwards. I ran at him, knocking him back a bit, but he kicked me off as Bucky threw a punch. The boy caught his fist, staring at it.
"You have a metal arm?" he asked. "That is awesome, dude!" Sam flew up and hit him, but he clung to the bird man, trying to bring him back down. "You have the right to remain silent!" Mid-air Spidey fended Sam off, then swung after him using his webs. I ran after him as he swung through the rafters, chasing Sam who was flying backwards, firing at him. I stopped as Bucky ripped a sign off the wall, throwing it at the spider boy. The soldier ducked behind a post but peeked out to look for the younger boy.
"Hey buddy," Spidey said, "I think you lost this!" He threw the sign back, and I sped forward, ramming into Bucky and shoving him out of the way. He nodded at me as we rolled to a stop.
"Thanks," he muttered. I nodded. We looked up as Spidey swung down towards Sam. Bucky ran towards them and jumped in the way. Bucky and Sam fell through the glass down onto the next floor and Peter webbed them in place.
"Guys, look," he said. "I'd love to keep this up but I've only got one job here today and I gotta impress Mr. Stark, so, l'm really sorry." Redwing suddenly flew up and grabbed the boy, dragging him through the window and dropping him.
"You couldn't have done that earlier?" Bucky asked. Sam sighed.
"I hate you." I ran up, leaning on the support beam and grinning.
"Well, well," I said. "This is interesting." The two men looked up at me.
"Don't even think about it, Chris," Sam said. "Get us out of this." I shook my head.
"No, I don't think so," I told him, walking over to Bucky. "This'll make up for all those times you were a dick." I sped my hand and cut through the webs on Bucky's arms, extending a hand to pull him off the floor. I grinned and saluted Sam before running off, leaving him yelling after me.
Bucky and I ran across the tarmac, falling into line with Steve as the others joined us. We were coming up on the quinjet, but Vision burned a line in the ground, cutting us off.
"Captain Rogers," he said. "I know you believe what you're doing is right. But for the collective good you must surrender now." The rest of Tony's team arrived, walking towards us threateningly.
"What do we do, Cap?" I asked. He sighed.
"We fight." Everyone broke into a sprint, meeting in the middle. I caught a glance of Pietro, running around and landing hits where he could, and smiled fondly before helping Bucky fight T'Challa. We exchanged hits until the prince was holding both of us back.
"I didn't kill your father," Bucky said.
"Then why did you run?" I frowned.
"Wouldn't you?" T'Challa pulled both of our hands off of him, then spun Bucky and fly-kicked him backwards. He turned to me and threw strategic hits. I blocked the ones I could before spinning as fast as I could and aiming a kick to his head. He caught my leg, holding it back. I gritted my teeth as claws appeared from his gloves. My eyes widened, and I tried to pull away, but he brought a hand to my leg and dragged his claws down it. I cried out in pain, dropping to the ground as I tried to stop the bleeding. I looked down at the wound that wasn't healing as most of mine would.
"Shit!" I exclaimed. I looked up as he stalked towards me. He aimed a hit for my neck, but Wanda stopped his hand, then waved her arms and sent him crashing into a passenger gangway. Pietro ran over, crouching beside me.
"Are you okay?" he asked, brushing the hair out of my face. I winced and nodded. I brought my hand away. It was covered in blood. I sighed.
"It's not healing," I said. I gritted my teeth and stood up, pushing away the pain. Pietro stood quickly.
"Chris, no," he said. "You're hurt." I shook my head.
"I've had worse." I didn't wait for his response before running off.
"We gotta go," Bucky said through the earpiece. "That guy's probably in Siberia by now."
"We gotta draw out the flyers," Steve said. "I'll take Vision. You get to the jet."
"No, you get to the jet!" Sam yelled. "Both of you! The rest of us aren't getting out of here."
"As much as I hate to admit it," Clint said, "if we're gonna win this one, some of us might have to lose it." I sighed.
"This isn't the real fight, Steve," I said. I heard Steve sigh.
"Alright, Sam," he said. "What's the play?"
"We need a diversion, something big."
"I got something kind of big," Scott offered. "But I can't hold it very long. On my signal, run like hell. And if I tear myself in half...don't come back for me."
"He's gonna tear himself in half?" Bucky asked.
"You're sure about this, Scott?"
"I do it all the time. I mean once...in a lab. Then I passed out." My eyes widened before he suddenly grew taller than the airport itself, grabbing Rhodey's leg as he attempted to fly away.
"I guess that's the signal," Steve said.
"Way to go, Tic Tac!" Sam yelled. Scott kicked a bus towards T'Challa, but Vision descended and braced himself, splitting the bus in two. I looked towards Bucky and Steve, who were getting close to the quinjet, and Vision fired a shining beam of energy from the stone, making the control tower collapse towards the entrance of the hangar. My eyes widened as Wanda struggled to slow its collapse. Rhodey descended behind her and fired a sonic disruptor, making her hold her head and scream. The tower began to fall again, and I gritted my teeth before taking off running, propelling the two super soldiers forward and ignoring the pain in my leg. I collapsed as we made it past the tower, and Bucky ran over to me as Natasha came into view.
"You're not gonna stop," she said. Steve shook his head.
"You know I can't." She held up an arm, her spider bites glowing.
"I'm gonna regret this," she muttered. She shot a bite past us, and it stunned T'Challa who had arrived behind us. "Go." Bucky helped me up, supporting my weight as the three of us ran onto the jet, taking off quickly. Bucky set me down in one of the seats, and I hissed in pain as he came back with bandages. He wrapped it as Steve looked back at me.
"It's not healing?" he asked. I sighed and shook my head, clenching my fists.
"Nope," I replied. "Damn vibranium for being so durable." He chuckled, but it didn't reach his eyes. Bucky tied off the bandage and sat in the last seat.
"What's gonna happen to your friends?" he asked. Steve sighed and shook his head.
"Whatever it is," he said, "I'll deal with it."
"I don't know if I'm worth all this, Steve." Steve glanced back at his friend.
"What you did all those years...it wasn't you. You didn't have a choice."
"I know. But I did it."
