Chapter 3

"I call it Cerebro." Hank said proudly, pointing at his machine. In the center of the circular shaped room was a helmet, with wires attached to all sides of it. Charles, Raven - The blonde girl - and Erik -the other man - stared at his machine in awe. "It's Spanish for brain. Ok, so, the electros connect Charles to the transmitter on the roof. When he picks up a mutant, his brain sends a signal through a relay, and the coordinates are printed out here." Hank explained, gesturing to a machine that looked like a printer.

"You designed this?" Raven asked, amazed.

"Yeah." Hank said, smiling shyly at her.

Charles walked to the center of the room, and I followed him. He turned around, standing under the helmet. I pulled it down like Hank showed me, adjusting it to fit him. He reached up to help, his hand brushing against mine. I blushed and moved my hand away quickly. I looked at him, meeting his eyes.

"I have never seen anyone with eyes like yours," He whispered to me, and a shiver went down my spine. I must be going crazy. My eyes were silver, with hints of blue throughout them, and I hated the way people stared at me as if I had a disease, but the way Charles looked at me...it was different. I suppose they are one of the better parts of my mutation though. "They're beautiful. I believe they are a result of-" Charles is cut off as Hank comes over to make sure that the helmet fits correctly. I step back quickly and let Hank do his job. I go over to his machines, flipping the switches that he told me too. When I turn around, Charles is looking at me. I stare at the ground.

"What an adorable lab rat you'll make, Charles." Erik said, raising an eyebrow.

"Erik-" Charles began but he was interrupted.

"I've been a lab rat. I know one when I see one." Erik said, staring at Charles.

"Ok...alright..." Hank talked to himself as he made sure that I had fitted the helmet properly. "Are you sure that we can't shave your head?" Hank asks, looking at Charles' hair.

"Don't touch my hair." Charles said firmly, and I giggled. He winked at me and I blushed and looked down.

"Ah, yes..." Hank replied, looking terribly disappointed. He walked over to the machine and flipped a few switches, turning it on. Erik stepped forward, concern written all over his face. Even without mind-reading powers, I could tell that Charles and Erik had a deeper connection than it seemed. Hank pressed some more buttons, and the room dimmed. Suddenly, a bright light came from the helmet, and Charles cried out in pain and gripped the railing around the center of the room. I felt the room darken drastically and Hank turned to me. I realized that I was the one making the room dark, and quickly lightened it.

"Sorry." I said quietly, and Hank gives me a reassuring smile. Charles seemed to have gotten control over it, and looked like he was in less pain. I walked over to Hank who watched with an expression of pure joy as the machine wrote down some coordinates.

"It's working!" He cried happily, a huge smile on his face. Raven laughed, and gently places her hand overtop of Hank's. I smiled. From that day on, Charles and Erik went searching for mutants. I would go with the from time to time, and I grew considerably closer to both Charles and Erik. Raven and I became very close friends, and it was nice to have another girl to talk to. I was still confused about why I got nervous around Charles. I had never felt that way before, and I certainly didn't know what it meant. The first time I went to find a mutant, he was in jail. The guards were surprised when we asked to visit him. His name was Alex Summers, and apparently begged to be in solitary confinement. And that was when I knew why Charles and Erik had wanted me to come along. I had told them about my childhood, and about my other powers, and I supposed they wanted me to convince Alex to join us. We were all about to go in, when I stepped in front of Charles and Erik.

"If you don't mind, I think I should do this one by myself." I said softly, turning around. What I didn't know, is that Charles was directly behind me, and when I turned, our faces were centimeters apart. We stare at each other for a good minute, before Charles stepped back awkwardly.

"Uh, right then. You go in Sky." He said, not meeting my eyes. I nod shyly, and the guard opens the door. On a bench in the back of the cell, sat a young man with blonde hair. I heard the door close behind me and Alex looked up. I walked over to him and sat on the bench next to him.

"Who are you?" He asked, moving away from me. I decided not to take it personally.

"I'm Sky. Sky Reynolds." I said quietly. "Who are you?"

"You know who I am." He muttered back.

"But do you?" I said, look over at him. "You've been here for about a year. You think it's all you'll ever need. There's no one here you can hurt. There's no reason to fear your powers if the only one around is you." He looked over at me, as if he was trying to figure out how I guessed correctly. "I've been there. I spent my teenage years living alone in a house in Maine. I was afraid. Afraid of hurting anyone else. My powers are dangerous and scary and crazy weird. But I think what I've learned is that there is beauty in them as well. A, well, dark beauty. And I'm betting that your powers are beautiful as well. How about we make a deal? You come join our team and show me your powers at our facility, and if I don't think that they are beautiful, then you can go back to living alone." I said, getting up. "And Alex? Living alone is just fine. But over the last two weeks, I have discovered that maybe, it's not the best things. Maybe...maybe we need others to help us control our powers. And to help us find the beauty in them." I say softly. "So do we have a deal?" The room is filled with silence for about five minutes.

"Alright."
