Astrid Mikaelson did not hate Mystic Falls at first.

Before becoming The Tribrid, before her family had started the vampire species, she was just a girl living in a viking village. She was young with bright eyes and an innocent mind. Mystic Falls had no name at that point in history but Astrid would call the patch of land she was born on as home. It was the place she grew up, the place she watched her siblings enter the world. And it was the place of her misfortune. Werewolves had been inhabiting the woods surrounding her home for centuries before they arrived and settled. Once a full moon, Astrid could remember huddling with her siblings inside their home, waiting for sunrise, for the rays of light announcing the start of a new day and their survival.

All she'd ever known about the werewolves is that they were bloodthirsty creatures who would rip through everyone that neared them. It instilled such fear into Astrid's young mind that she had grown fearful of the woods and the creatures inhabiting them. She had taken after Mikael, loathing the mention of werewolves. Her hatred was only enlarged when her youngest brother, Henrik, had died one full moon. A mistake, her brother had weeps in her arms. Distraught by their loss and moved by the rage, Astrid's mother - Esther - had reached a breaking point. Henrik's loss had hardened her and the fear of losing more of her children had made Esther and Mikael spiral even more.

Their idea of a superior species, able to survive a werewolf attack, to be faster, stronger, superior to the species had led them down a path they could not return. And when denied by the coven elder, Esther had taken the task into her own hand. The ritual had turned her children into something unrecognisable. Faster, stronger, they had reached their goal. But in doing so, the balance of nature had been altered. Their unstoppable children, unable to walk into the sun, are burnt by the plant residing at the roots of the white oak tree. Every creature must have a weakness. The hunger that had awoken in Astrid was undescribable. And blood had spilled that night. Villagers Astrid had grown up with, torn to shreds. Astrid couldn't remember feeling remorse.

But she could feel everything else. Her emotions had gone haywire, the blood thirst was too strong. Everything hurt. The moon was high in the sky and Astrid had felt her bones break. In an attempt to save her children from death, from illness, from anything that could separate them from her, Esther had been forced by nature to reveal her deepest secret. Astrid and Klaus, twins born to her during spring, are not Mikael's children. Fathered by a man whom the both of them were raised to loathe, a werewolf, Astrid and Klaus were forced to face the truth. The very same night they became immortal was the very same night they lost a part of themselves. Hybrids, both werewolf and vampire, cursed to never feel and understand their werewolf nature.

So many unanswered questions had led Astrid and Klaus a path of resentment neither one could return from. Klaus, having grown resentful of their mother's betrayal, had become obsessed with the idea of breaking the curse. Astrid, more distasteful of the situation had grown accustomed to ignoring the side of herself. Centuries had passed, kingdoms had risen and fallen and the two had remained the same. Klaus, still as keen on breaking the curse and Astrid, ignorant to their situation. But there was nothing Astrid wouldn't do for her brother. Even if it leads her back to a town that brings nothing but nostalgia.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

How I felt after I spent close to four days writing the summary ( it's still not what I imagined ):

It's been a long time coming. I promised an Astrid rewrite like two years ago I believe and I haven't stuck to my word because I have written nothing for Astrid. I've fallen into this writer's block as well and I still haven't made my way out of it. But Astrid is very special to me. She's the first OC that I've created and truly stuck by, the first OC I truly felt like I needed to write and bring into the world. She's important to me, her characterization, her story, her life, they all mean the world to me. She's my complicated child. Astrid is a truly damaged person whose life gets more and more complicated.

I've made a lot of changes when it comes to Astrid. And I mean A LOT.  Her original story was a crack plot if I'm honest. And while I will always be emotionally attached to the idea of Astrid being Hope's mother, I have way more planned for this rewrite. Astrid is no longer going to be Hope's mother.

As for the fancast version of the Mikaelson's, I have an explanation to your confusion. For a while now, I ignored the problematic things the actors have done and chose to dissociate them from the character they play. But even then, it keeps getting harder to ignore. Nate Buzolic is problematic. Daniel Gillies is problematic. Claire Holt is problematic. I'm tired. And I'm sure some of y'all are as well. So I made the choice to fancast the Mikaelson's and change some of their storyline. This is for the sake of my mental health first of all and to fix most of the plot holes Julie Plec has left in their storylines. I've also been helped by toujoursdk when it came to making this choice and only because she's been doing it for years now. There's so much I'm gonna add to the story and I can't wait for your reactions to it.

WARNING: If you've watched The Vampire Diaries, you would be well aware that there are some heavy topics in this show. Aside from them, there will be heavy topics I add to the story for Astrid. And it will involve topics of trauma, such which you already know. I will not put a warning at the beginning of the chapters so read at your own risk and I apologise in extent if they trigger you.
