As per usual, the breakfast cafe was very busy. And as much as I wanted to say that was the reason why Kong and I hadn't talked much today, I knew that was a lie.
"There you are." I turned to face Tasha as she made her way towards me, a clipboard in her hand. Part of me wondered why she wasn't nursing various trays like she usually did. She tucked her pink hair behind her ear with the back of the pen she was holding and then tapped the clipboard with the pen. "Table eleven, two, and nineteen haven't been attended to and the your other half is practically missing." She snorted.
My brows furrowed in slight confusion. Where was Kong?
Tasha waited. Then blinked. "What are you still standing here for? Those tables won't wait themselves." With one shooing motion of her hand which was holding the clipboard, she willed me to get to it. I huffed as I walked away.
Today was not a good day for me. First off I'd been working my ass off for the past three hours. Second, tomorrow was supposedly the day I was doomed because I still hadn't fixed my problem with Adam. And if I was being honest, the reason for that was because I was scared and confused.
James wasn't willing to even be in the same space as I was. Obviously, he'd kissed me that night because he was drunk and I was stupid enough not to stop it. The bare memory clawed at my heart and threatened to rip it out.
However, I tried not to focus on it. I had tables to attend to.
I smiled at the couple at table nineteen. The girl smiled back while the guy just kept staring at the girl. My lip twitched. "Welcome to the breakfast cafe. What can I get you?" I asked with the least amount of enthusiasm I could give.
Now, I wasn't jealous of them. . .or maybe I was. Jealous of how I'd once had that and it'd just slipped away like dry sand. It was funny how one could be so infatuated by someone in one day and not want to see the person the next.
"We'll have two frosty blueberry muffins, the breakfast plate and two cups of warm chocolat-" My sharp intake of air caused the blonde girl to stare at me with worry. Her tone grew softer than it was before. "Is something wrong?"
Of course, nothing was wrong. Just that, there was only one person I knew who liked his chocolate warm. And not just the normal kind of warm. Too cold to be hot. To hot to be warm. His kind of perfect.
James' words, not mine.
A sudden ache grew at the back of my head causing me to run my hand through my hair.
"Are you alright?" The girl's kind voice cut through my thoughts. I saw her almond shaped eyes narrow slightly, like she was trying to figure me out while her boyfriend sat there nursing a frown. He was probably pissed that I was ruining his perfect date or something. "You look a little pale."
"Er, no. I'm fine. No problem," I rushed out, whipping out a piece of paper from my back pocket and scribbling down their order before hurrying away from their gazes.
As I headed to the other tables Tasha had assigned me, images of James and all the time he'd complimented me for understanding just what he wanted ambushed my mind. They came so hard at me that a few moments later, I slapped down the orders against the counter in pure frustration without even looking up at whoever was behind it.
"New orders I just got," I practically spat out. And while taking a step away, I added, "They need urgent attention."
"You're white in the face."
My gaze immediately snapped up to meet Kong's neutral one and my frown deepened. I struggled not to take out my frustrations on him. "Where the heck have you been for the past four hours?"
Kong, staring me in the eyes, unmoving, replied, "I was in the bathroom."
My eyebrows kissed the ceiling. "The bathroom? For four hours? You're obviously trying to avoid me for a reason I know nothing about."
"That's not true."
"Yeah?" I crossed my arms and let the frustration take the wheel. "So what happened yesterday morning, when you thanked the heavens for not finding my dead body hidden off somewhere and then suddenly went quiet? Up until now, we've not talked about the party or what happened at the party."
"Nothing happened at the party, Avery." Kong's blank stare had turned into a glare by now, his small lips pulled into a line. "Drop it."
I narrowed my eyes. "No. A lot happened that you're not telling me about. Especially since I found out you kissed Patricia Grant."
Someone behind me gasped. When both Kong and I turned to see who it was, the customer had her hands to her lips dramatically. The next second she dropped them and gave us the flattest look in the universe. "Can you move the fuck out of my way so I can order?"
I ignored her and faced a partly shocked partly frustrated Kong. I had stuff to find out. Now.
"You're not a saint either, A," he spat venom. King only called me "A" whenever he wanted to push my buttons. For some reason, being called that really did it for me. My frown deepened. "Why don't you tell me where you slept over the night of the party."
And just like that, it was as if someone poured water over my flame. I felt my entire expression fall and speechlessness take over me. The next moment, I was a stuttering mess.
"That... Er... I was at-I had to-"
Tasha's voice cut through the tension. I never knew I could be grateful for Tasha, but right then, I could kiss her feet in gratitude. A scowl took it's place on her expression.
"We will handle this." She motioned between us, frowning."Later." Her clipboard was still in place at her side while she apologized to someone behind me. Then she turned and stared daggers at Kong and I. If looks could burn, we'd both be grilled turkey breasts by now.
"Avery, head to table five immediately. Kong, you attend to the nice people waiting in line for you both to stop bickering. And the both of you, meet me in Roy's office in the next fifteen minutes."
She said the last part in a low hissing voice that did nothing to ease the tension before glaring at us one last time for good measure and walking away.
I didn't even look at Kong before I stormed-more like sulked-towards table five. I couldn't. How did he know about me staying over at James'? That morning, after he'd engulfed me in a bear hug and thanked the skies for my safety, I'd told him I slept over at some guy's place. And I hadn't mentioned James.
I shook my head to clear my thoughts. When is said today was a bad day,I had not expected this.
Gosh why was all of this happening now? And how the fuck do I get out of this mess?
My questions weren't answered, and neither did my day get better. Infact, it took a drastic turn for the worst. Because sitting at table five, clad in a black business suit and a white dressing shirt, staring at the menu with furrowed brows, was the devil himself.
Or in real sense, Jameson Grant, my ex boyfriend.
And the fact that he wasn't hard to look at wasn't helping at all. In my opinion, looking this good had to be an offense in the constitution due to its many dangers. Like, breath speeding, heart racing, sweat breaking and inability to move or think. All of which I was currently experiencing.
Like all of that wasn't enough, everything paused when James looked up and caught my gaze, staring me down.
A grin broke out on his face.
