Chapter One: The River's Edge

"Our story is about a town, a small town, and the people who live in the town. From a distance, it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the world... Safe. Decent. Innocent. Get closer, though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath. The name of our town is Riverdale. And our story begins, I guess, with what the Blossom twins and Alexandria Andrews did this summer. On the Fourth of July, just after dawn, Jason and Cheryl Blossom as well as Alexandria Andrews drove out to Sweetwater River for an early morning boat ride."

I am sitting in the passenger seat of Jason's convertible. He held my hand as he drove through town. We are going on an early morning boat ride on Sweetwater River. Once we got to the shore, we got out of the car and walked to the boat. Jason was in between Cheryl and I holding our hands as we walk to the boat. We stop and Cheryl looks over at Jason. "Are you scared, Jason?" Cheryl asked and he smiles shaking his head looking between us. Cheryl and I sit beside each other holding hands while Jason rows the boat to the other side of the river.

"The next thing we know happened for sure is that Dilton Doiley, who was leading Riverdale's Boy Scout Troop on a bird watching expedition, came upon Cheryl and Alex by the rivers edge."

Cheryl and I are by the edge of the river clinging to each other soaking wet. I hear someone walk up behind us causing us both to look over and see Dilton Doiley and his scouts. "Jason." Cheryl and I say in sync. As we wait for our parents and the police we cling to each other. When the police finally get a boat to us, Cheryl and I are wrapped up in a blanket together with her parents by her side and my father by mine.

"Riverdale Police dragged Sweetwater River for Jason's body, but never found it. So a week later, the Blossom family buried an empty casket and Jason's death was ruled an accident, as the story that Cheryl and Alex told made the rounds. That Cheryl dropped a glove in the water, and Jason reached down to get it, and accidentally tipped the boat, and panicked, and drowned. As for us, we were still talking about the "July Fourth tragedy" on the last day of summer vacation, when a new mystery rolled into town."

I'm in my room getting ready for the annual Alex, Archie, and Betty last day of summer vacation dinner at Pop Chock'lit Shoppe. Every year on the last day of summer vacation, the three of us meet up at Pops and discuss what happened over the summer.

I get dressed and walk to Archie's door. His door is open so I knock on the door frame. He turns and looks at me. "Hey sis." Archie said "Hey, can I come in?" I ask "Yeah, of course." I walk in sitting on his bed. He's in front of his window putting his shirt on looking down at his phone. I see Kevin and Betty in Betty's window watching Archie. I laugh falling back on his bed. "What?" Archie asked turning around and I sit back up. "You're giving Betty and Kev a whole show right now." I say and he laughs coming towards me. "Yeah, I kind of noticed." Archie said "Sure you did, Little Brother. You're oblivious as hell." I say "You're only 10 minutes older." Archie said "Still older." I say smirking at him. He starts walking towards me smirking and I quickly get up backing away from him and towards his window. "No. No. No. Archie no!" He comes towards me picking me up. "Archie! Stop!" I start laughing as he spins. He finally puts me down and I shove him. "Asshole!" I say glaring at him and he laughs making me start smiling and roll my eyes.

Betty, Archie and I are sitting in our normal booth at Pops. Archie and I are sitting on the same side. "So, what was the highlight?" Archie asked "Of my internship? The Toni Morrison book release party I organized, by far. At the end of the night, Toni Morrison, who is, as you both know, my literary hero, says to me..." Betty said before I cut her off. "Yes. Yes." I say "Don't rush this time, Betty. It goes by so fast at your age. One summer can change everything." Betty said and I look down agreeing. "Wow. That's so true." Archie said "How was working for your dad, Arch?" Betty asked "It was... pouring concrete, every day, all day long. To pass time, I would start composing these poems, in my head. And at night, I'd go home, I'd write them down..." Archie said before Betty cut him off. "You don't even like reading poetry." Betty said

"They weren't poems, they were song lyrics. And working on them made me feel like..." Archie said "What, Archie?" Betty asked "It made me feel like I'd finally broken through to something real. About my life and what I should be trying to do with it. Music. Starting this year, tomorrow." Archie said "Amazing. Will you ask Ms. Grundy to tutor you?" Betty asked "I'm not sure, maybe." Archie said "What about football? Can you do both?" I ask "I'll try out, at least." Archie said "Well, have you told dad?" I ask "No. Until I've got things more figured out, you two are the only people I'm telling, okay?" Archie asked and Betty nods. "Well, I'd love to hear them sometime. Your songs." Betty said "Yeah?" Archie asked "Yes." Betty said "Yeah, I'm finishing a couple of demos tonight." Archie said "Great. Also, Dria, how was..." Betty goes to say but she cuts herself off. "My summer?" She nods a little. "Well minus the fact my best friend died, it was mostly cheer routines and planning for dances, working in our dads office and any other stuff Mayor McCoy needed my help with." I say

"Well, I'm looking forward to the dances. Also, Archie. I've been thinking about us, and our friendship and how it's time we..." Betty said and the bell to Pops goes off and I look up and see a raven haired girl putting down the hood of her cloak. "I called in an order, for Lodge?" The girl asked Pop. "Two burgers, yeah, almost ready, but you gotta wait." Pop said "Hi." The girl said looking at us. "Hey." Archie and I say in sync. "How are the onion rings here?" The girl asked "Really good." I say looking up at her. "Can we get some onion rings, too, please?" The girl asked "Yeah." Pop said "Thanks. My mom and I just moved here, so..." the girl said "From where?" Archie asked "New York." The girl said "Wow." Archie said and Betty nods looking down. I look away out the window trying not to laugh. "Do you guys go to Riverdale?" The girl asked "We do. All three of us. Together." Betty said at the same time as Archie. "We're sophomores." Archie said

"Me too. I'm filled with dread." The girl said "Why's that?" I ask "Are you familiar with the works of Truman Capote? I'm Breakfast at Tiffany's, but this place is strictly In Cold Blood." The girl and Archie laugh and Betty and I look at each other. "Veronica Lodge." Veronica said and Archie shakes her hand. "Archie Andrews. Uh, this is Betty Cooper, and my sister, Alex Andrews." Archie said and Betty and I smile at the girl. "Wait, are you...." Veronica asked before I cut her off. "Supposed to give you your tour tomorrow? Yes. I'm your peer mentor." I say "Do you want to join us?" Betty immediately looks up at Archie. "Hey, maybe we can un-full you with dread." Archie said "My mom's waiting for me." Archie nods. "But, to be continued." Veronica said "Yeah." Veronica walks away and Archie looks back at Betty. "What were you saying?" Archie asked "Nothing." Betty said

After getting ready, I walk out into the hallway meeting Archie. "Hey, Dad. First day of school and I'm already late." He goes down the stairs and I follow him. "Hey, Vegas." Archie said petting him walking into the kitchen. I stop to pet Vegas. "Hey, Vegas." I kneel down in front of him petting him but he starts trying to lick me. "No, Vegas please stop." I say and I'm able to stand up and go into the kitchen. Dad starts walking towards us. "Hey, you, uh, you stopping by the site later?" Dad asked "Dad, it's my first day." Archie said "Oh, we got to get you going in the office, so next summer you're not on the crew." Dad said "Well, I can't. I've got football tryouts." Dad has this look on his face. "Or is that not okay?" Archie asked "No, it's uh... it's okay. Good luck." Dad said and Archie smiles and goes to walk towards the door before stopping. "Dria, you coming?" Archie asked "Yeah, I'll be there in a minute." He steps outside. "I'll see you when I get home, Dad. Bye, love you." I say kissing his cheek. "Bye, Sweetie. Love you too. Watch out for Archie. And remember you need anything just call." Dad said "Always and I know." I walk out the door to Archie. "Let's go, little bro." I say "By ten minutes, Dria. By ten minutes." Archie said and I laugh. "Still older. Are we walking with Betty?" I ask "No, we're not." Archie said

Archie and I walk into the school and go to our lockers that are right next to each other. Archie is reading over his song lyrics when Reggie comes and leans against the locker beside mine. "Bro, you are ready for football. I'm not kidding you, dude. You got ripped. Dude, you're a beast. Look at this arm, it's diesel! How much you benching, like 220? 225?" I shut my locker leaning against it waiting on Archie. "You got to give me some tips, man. Romanian deadlifts, right? Taking some T? Ginseng? Maca root?" Archie gets his stuff out of his locker and we start walking. "Tribulus terrestris?" Reggie asked walking on the left side of me and Archie is on the right. "It's from working construction, Reg." Archie said "Oh, yeah, yeah, that's right." I roll my eyes at him.

"Yo, Moose. Look who grew up over the summer. Hey, Dria. You look hot as always." Reg said looking down at me. "Hey, Reg." I say laughing a little bit at his stupidity. "Can you not flirt with my sister in front of me?" Archie asked "So I can flirt with her when you're not around?" Reggie asked smiling and winking at me and I know at that moment he's doing this to annoy Archie. "No. You can't." Archie said "Relax bro. I'm just fucking with you. I see Dria as a sister just like you do." Reggie said "Hey!" Moose said and he walks with us. "Yo, be honest with me. You work on any houses? Any private homes?" Reggie asked "Yeah, a couple." Archie said "Did you tap some cougar ass this summer?" Reggie asked "And that is my cue to leave. I got to go show someone around. Bye, boys." I say turning back to look at them before continuing to walk away from them. "Bye, Dria." The boys say in sync.

I meet up with Veronica. "Sorry I'm slightly late. My brother took forever." I say "It's okay. You're here now." Veronica said "So, I usually start off my tours with a little history and context. Riverdale High first opened its doors in 1941 and..." I say before Veronica cuts me off. "And hasn't been redecorated since, apparently. Honestly, I feel like I'm wandering through the lost epilogue of Our Town." Veronica said "Uh-huh." I say laughing. "So what's the social scene like here? Any night clubs?" Veronica asked and Kev and Betty walk up on the other side of Veronica. "A strip club called the Ho Zone and a tragic gay bar called Innuendo." Kev said walking in front of us. "Friday nights, football games and then tailgate parties at the Mallmart parking lot. Saturday night is movie night, regardless of what's playing at the Bijou, and you better get there early, because we don't have reserved seating in Riverdale." Kev walks over to beside me wrapping his arm around my shoulder. "And Sunday nights... thank god for HBO." We stop in the hallway. "Veronica Lodge, Kevin Keller, and you met Betty Cooper last night. Veronica is new here. Kevin is..." I say before Veronica cuts me off. "Gay, thank god. Let's be best friends." Veronica said and I laugh as they shake hands.

"Is it true what they say about your dad?" Kevin asked and I elbow him. "Kev." I say and he looks at me. "What?" He mouths and I shake my head. "That he's the devil incarnate? I stand by my father. Does everyone here know?" None of us say anything answering her question. "Wonderful. Ten minutes in and I'm already the Blue Jasmine of Riverdale High." Veronica said walking away. "What?" Kev asked when Betty and I look at him before following Veronica. "Oh, and of course there's the Back-to-School semi formal this weekend." Betty said and I see Archie down the hallway.  "Oh!" Veronica grabs Betty and I. "There's the hottie we were with last night. The red-headed Ansel Elgort. Is he your boyfriend?" Veronica asked "No, he's straight." Kev said at the same time Betty said "No, we're just friends." Betty said "And I can tell by the looks and hair that you two are siblings?" Veronica asked looking at me. "You would be correct. He's my twin." I say "In that case, mind putting in a word? I've tried every flavor of boy but orange." Veronica said "Actually, to clarify.... Betty and Archie aren't dating, but they are endgame." Kev said and I laugh a little. "You should ask him to the semi formal then." Veronica said "She should, but I heard it might be getting canceled. Because of what happened to Jason. They're gonna tell us at the assembly." Kev said "Speaking of assembly. I've got to go. I'll see you later." I say starting to walk away.

I walk into the assembly room and straight towards the stage. "Hey, Andi." Cheryl said hugging me. "Hey, Cherry. You ready for this?" I ask hugging her back. "Not at all. Do you mind speaking?" Cheryl asked "Of course. I prepared for it anyways." I say "Thank you." Cheryl said and I nod. Everyone starts filling in and once they sit down, I decide to start. "Hello, everyone. Can we all take a moment of silence for Jason?" I step away from microphone for a moment before stepping back. "Thank you for that moment of silence. Cheryl has asked me to speak for her today in honor of her brother, Jason." Cheryl grabs my hand holding it standing beside me. "Many of you were lucky enough to have known Jason personally. Myself included. Each and every one of you meant the world to Jason. I loved Jason. He was and always will be my platonic soulmate. My twin flame if you will. So after speaking with Cheryl, Jason's twin, I am speaking with the confidence of a best friend... Jason wouldn't want us to spend the year mourning. Jason would want us to move on with our lives. Which is why Cheryl and I have asked the School Board not to cancel the Back-to-School semi formal." There's cheering among the crowd of students. "But rather, to let us use it as a way to heal, collectively, and celebrate Jason's too, too short life on this mortal coil. Thank you all." I say and we step away from the microphone. "Thank you so much. I couldn't have said it better myself." Cheryl said "You're welcome, Cherry. I've got to go but I'll see you later. Okay?" I ask and she nods. "Okay." Cheryl said before she hugs me.

I'm walking out of the room when Jughead walks up beside me. "So how much of what you just said do you truly believe?" Jughead asked "Hello to you too, Jug." I say turning my head. "Hey. But seriously, how much do you truly believe?" Jug asked "Look, it doesn't matter what I believe or not. All it matters is if Cheryl believes and the people of Riverdale believe it. And I seem to have achieved both. Now I got to get to class. See you later, Jug." I say "See you later." Jug said

Betty, Archie, Kev and I are sitting at a table outside for lunch listening to one of Archie's songs. Betty is smiling listening to his music. I hear someone walking up to us and I turn my head to see Veronica. "Can I join?" Veronica asked "Yeah." Betty said and Veronica sits down beside Kev. "What are we doing?" Veronica asked "Listening to one of Archie's songs." Betty said "I thought we were going to have to pretend to like it, but it's actually really good." Kev said "Yeah, it's really good, Arch." I say and he smilies. "Wait, that was you singing? Something you wrote?" Veronica asked "It's rough." Archie said "No, it's great." Betty said "Its incredible, actually, the little snippet I heard. Is that your thing? Music?" I see the way that Betty looks at Veronica. Kev looks over at me when he notices it too. "Are you doing something with that?" Veronica asked "Yeah, that's the plan. So how's your first day going? Good?" Archie asked

"Not to be a complete narcissist, but I thought people would be more..." Veronica said before Kev cut her off. "Obsessed with you?" I can tell the comment hurt her feelings a little bit. "Any other year, you'd be trending number one, for sure. This year, though, it's all about Cheryl trying to win the Best Supporting Psycho Oscar for her role as Riverdale High's bereaved Red Widow." Kev said and Archie starts getting nervous and moving around a lot. I elbow Kev at the comment he made. "Ow! What? You know it's true." Kev whispers to me. "Doesn't mean you have to point it out. Plus she's my friend and I understand to an extent where she's coming from." I whisper back and he looks down remembering. "Hey, I should go. I got that meeting with Grundy and then football tryouts, so." Archie said drawing mine and Kev's attention back to him. "You okay football, too? What don't you do?" Veronica asked "Good luck, little bro." I say smirking slightly. "10 minutes, Dria. 10 minutes." Archie said "Best 10 minutes of my life." He turns and looks at me offended. "I'm just kidding. Good luck." He waves walking away.

I stand up to sit beside Betty and see Cheryl walking up to us. "B slide over in front of Kev. Cheryl's coming and I know you don't want her sitting beside you." I say and she does and I sit in front of Veronica. "Before you ask, Blue Jasmine, no, she has not invited him to the dance yet...." Kev said looking at Betty. "Not yet, and don't talk about Archie." Betty said and Cheryl reaches us. "Veronica Lodge, I'd heard whisperings. I'm Cheryl Blossom, may I sit? Andi, would you mind?" I move over closer to Betty. "So, what are you four hens gossiping about? Archie's Efron-esque emergence from the chrysalis of puberty?" Cheryl asked and I see Betty shake her head out of the corner of my eye. "Oh my god, Cherry ew. That's my brother." Cheryl just turns her head to look at me and raises her eyebrow. I knew immediately what she meant when she did it making me roll my eyes. "Okay. You got me." I say and she smirks before looking back at Veronica. Kev looks confused as to what just happened but I just shake my head at him.

"Extracurriculars. Weatherbee wants me to sign up for a few." Veronica said "Cheerleading. You must. Andi and I are the co-captains of the River Vixens." Cheryl moves her hair. "I'm shocked Andi didn't mention it." Cheryl said before looking at me. "I was going to but then I saw you coming so I figured I would let you do it." I say "Is cheerleading still a thing?" Kev asked "Is being the gay best friend still a thing?" Kev looks over at me with the look he has when he doesn't like someone. I smirk trying not to laugh. "Some people say it's retro, I say it's eternal and iconic." Cheryl said "At Spence, I sat at the top of the Elites' pyramid. I'm in. Betty, you're trying out, too." Veronica said and my eyes go wide looking at Kev. "Of course, anyone's welcome to try out, but Betty's already got so much on her plate right now and being a Vixen is kind of a full-time thing. But open to all!" Cheryl squeezes my hand before getting up. "Follow me on Twitter and I'll do the same. My handle is @cherylbombshell." Cheryl said before walking away.

"Okay. Go ahead and hate on cheerleading, but if Hipster Prince Harry..." Veronica said before Betty cut her off. "I'd love to be a cheerleader. It would look great on my college applications. But last year, when I tried out, Cheryl said I was too fat." Betty said "Too season 5 Betty Draper. It was a great line, but not at all true." Kev said "Well, you're a total smoke show now. I mean it. As hot and as smart as you are, you should be the Queen Bey of this drab hive." Veronica said "Look, if you want to be a River Vixen, Veronica and I can help you prep. I'm Co-Captain and I'm sure Veronica has moves. But you know I can't just let you in the team because you're my friend." I say "Okay. You know what? Show me your moves." Betty said

-time skip-

Cheryl and I are sitting in between her minions watching Betty and Veronica do the cheer. "We're blue and gold! We're dynamite!" Cheryl marks something on her clip board. "We'll take you down, and fight the fight!" Betty and Veronica cheer in sync. "Whoo! Go, Bulldogs!" Veronica cheers. "Hmm." In that moment I could tell she wasn't impressed. "Ladies, where's heat? Where's the sizzle?" Cheryl asked "Well, you haven't seen our big finish yet." Veronica said and she grabs Betty's arm dragging Betty towards her. They kiss and my eyes go wide and I hear the boys watching in the background start talking. "Check your sell-by date, ladies, faux lesbian kissing hasn't been taboo since 1994. So let's see if you do better with the interview portion of our audition. Betty, how's your sister doing?" Cheryl asked and I roll my eyes knowing where this is going. "Um, Polly's fine, thanks for asking." Betty said "Veronica, has Betty told you about her sister yet?" Cheryl asked "Uh, no." Veronica said and she looks over at Betty then at me and I just look down knowing if I do say anything then it could backfire on me.

"Go ahead, Betty. Tell Veronica about your sister and my dear brother." Cheryl said "Polly and Jason dated." Betty said and Cheryl and I scoff. "I wouldn't say 'dated.'" Cheryl said "It didn't end well." Betty said "In fact, Jason's probably why your sister had a nervous breakdown and now lives in a group home, isn't it?" Cheryl asked "That's what my parents think." Betty said "What do you have to say about that, Betty? Go ahead, the floor is yours. Whatever you've been dying to spew about Jason and how he treated Polly, unleash it. Destroy me. Tear me a new one. Rip me to shreds. Annihilate me." Cheryl said and I can see Betty clenching her fists. "I just..." Betty said "Finally." Cheryl said and I put my hand between our chairs at her thigh and she grabs it with her other hand gripping my hand. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry about what happened to Jason. I can't even imagine what you and your family must be going through." Betty said "Right." She looks down for a second letting go of my hand before looking back up. "Veronica, welcome to the River Vixens. Betty, better luck next time." Cheryl said "Wait, what? Why? Because you couldn't bully Betty into being a bitch?" Veronica asked "We need girls with fire on our squad." Cheryl said pointing between me and her.

"I know what you need, Cheryl, because I know who you are. You would rather people fear than like you, so you traffic in terror and intimidation. You're rich, so you've never been held accountable, but I'm living proof. That certainty, that entitlement you wear on your head like a crown? It won't last. Eventually, there will be a reckoning. Or..." Veronica starts walking towards us. "Maybe that reckoning is now. And maybe, that reckoning... is me. Betty and I come as a matching set. You want one, you take us both. You wanted fire? Sorry, Cherylbombshell, my specialty's ice." Veronica said and Cheryl inhales. "Veronica, that's enough." I say

I'm at my locker in the locker room waiting on Veronica and Betty when Cheryl walks up to hers which is right beside mine. "Sorry I didn't stop Veronica earlier then I did." I say "It's fine. I still have you that's all that matters." Cheryl said and she hugs me. "I got to go watch my brother tryout but I'll see you later, yeah?" I ask "Yeah. I love you Andi." Cheryl said "I love you too, Cherry." I say and she walks away. I walk over to Betty and Veronica. "Veronica. Why did... Why did you defend me? I know the crowd you ran with in New York. Why are you being so... nice?" Betty asked and we go out onto the track watching the boys tryout. I'm walking in the middle of the two. "When my father got arrested, it was the worst thing ever. All these trolls started writing horrible things about us. We'd get letters and emails saying that my dad was a thief, my mom was a clueless socialite, and that I was the spoiled rich-bitch ice princess. And what hurt the most about it was... the things the trolls were writing were true. I was like Cheryl. I was worse than Cheryl. So, when my mom said we were moving to Riverdale, I made a pact with myself to use this as an opportunity to become maybe, hopefully, a better version of myself." Veronica said

"That's a lot of pressure. When Polly and Jason got together... it meant everything to her and nothing to him, and... and things got super intense and weird and toxic and my mom turned on Polly." I start playing with my necklace and look down at the mention of Jason "Said Polly wasn't her daughter anymore, said all these awful things to her. Jason hurt Polly, but it's my mom who broke her." Betty said and I look up and see my brother. "Archie! You're so doing this." Veronica said "What?" Betty asked "Slaying your dragons, Betty Cooper, one by one." Veronica said and Archie leaves Reggie and Moose to make his way over to us. "Looking good Dria!" Reggie yells out as they run past us but he turns around waiting for my response. "Aww thanks Reg! You look like you took a bath in dirt!" He smirks running towards me. "No, no, no! Reginald, no!" I yell running away from him.  "Come on Alexandria. The full name?" Reg asked "Mantle!" Coach Clayton yells and it causes Reggie to quit running and I stop to looking at Coach Clayton. "Yes, Coach?" Reggie asked "Leave Alex alone and join the team. And Alex quit annoying my players." Clayton said "Yes, Coach." He turns to look at me. "I'll get you back for that later." Reggie said "Sure you will. And Coach where's the fun in that?" I ask "Alex." Clayton said "Yes, Coach." I say "Thank you." Clayton said "No problem." I say before walking back over to Archie, Betty and Veronica.

I stop beside Archie joining the conversation. "I was wondering if you wanted to come with both of us." Betty said "Huh?" Archie and I ask in sync. "What?" Veronica asked "It's your first dance at Riverdale. You should have someone to go with, even if it's just a friend, and besides Dria is going with Kevin or Cheryl." Betty said "I mean, I'd love to." Veronica said "I'm not really in the headspace for a dance." Archie said and I just turn my head and look at him. "Oh. That's okay." Betty said trying to hide her disappointment but not very well. "Totally unacceptable, Archiekins." I turn my head to look at Veronica because of the nickname. "We need an escort. Take a break from being a tortured musical genius and come spend a blissful evening with not one, but two newly-minted River Vixens. We'll text you time and place." Veronica said and Archie laugh. "Okay. Yeah, okay. Bye." Archie said kissing my cheek. "Bye." Betty and I say in sync.

-time skip-

Betty and I are dancing around her room together to music that she had playing lip syncing the lyrics. I had changed back into my normal clothes and out of my cheer uniform but Betty still had hers on. Suddenly the music is cut off and we turn around to see Betty's mom, Alice at the doorway. "What is that?" Alice asked "I made the cheerleading squad." Betty said "Cheryl Blossom's cheerleading squad?" Alice asked "And mine." I say and Alice glared at me. "After what Jason did to Polly?" Betty grabs my hand as I take a step. "No, I'm sorry. I won't allow it. Take that off right now." Alice said "No." Betty said and I smirk slightly. "What did you say to me?" Alice asked "I do everything for everyone. Everything to be perfect. The perfect daughter, the perfect sister, the perfect student... can't I do this one thing just for me?" Betty asked picking up her bag. "Wait." Alice said "Get out of my way." Betty said "Where are you going?" Alice asked "To buy a dress. Because guess what? I'm also going to the dance with Archie. And Veronica." Betty said "Wait. Hermione Lodge's daughter?" Alice asked "She's actually really nice. And trying to be a good person." Betty said "You think so? You think she's going to be your friend? Let me tell you something. Girls like Cheryl and Veronica Lodge, they don't like girls like us." Alice said "I don't want to hear it, Mom. It's happening. I'm going. Come on, Dria." Betty said as she walks out the door and I grab my bag walking past Alice who grabs my arm.

"How many times have I told you to stay away from my daughter?" Alice asked "Alice no one would believe you if you told them that the Northside Princess as they like to call me, is the Princess and soon to be Queen of one of the biggest gangs on the Southside. They would laugh in your face. And Alice just because you're no longer a member doesn't mean anything. A snake doesn't shed their skin so easily." I go to walk out the door but stop. "Also, I would be careful what you say to me. I could easily leave clues about what you did in your teen years for Betty to find because we both know she'd easily figure it out." I say and she looks at me in shock and I walk out of the room and find Betty in the kitchen.

Betty and I went shopping for us both a dress for the dance. Once we both found the dress that we wanted, we headed home. She goes to her house and I go to mine. Archie is playing his guitar on the porch so I run in and lay the dress on my bed before coming back to listen to him play. I sit on the bench closer to the edge of the porch listening to him play. Dad steps out onto the porch and walks over to where I'm at sitting his beer on the railing of the house and Archie stops playing and turns to look at him. "I, um... I got a call from your coach today. He's under the impression that you can't play varsity football because I'm making you work for me." I look over at Archie. "Which is odd, because you made it seem like you couldn't work for me because you were playing football. So my first question is... who are you lying to? Me or your coach?" Dad asked and Archie finally turned around to look at us. "Neither." Dad just looks at him. "Both." Dad nods his head looking down. "Dad... I want to study music, I want to write music." Archie said

"Football takes you to college. College takes you to business school. Business school..." Dad said before Archie cuts him off. "Takes me back here. To work for you in Riverdale." Archie said standing up. "Not for me, with me." He walks towards Archie and I stand up and stand behind him. "And eventually for yourself, son. It's the same thing for your sister. Cheerleading, her grades and her internship with Mayor McCoy, all of that takes her to college. The company would be yours and your sisters." Dad said "No disrespect, Dad, but I don't want it." Archie said "Three months ago, you did. What happened?" Dad asked and I could tell he was hurt but not trying to show it. "I've changed. Everything's changed. This summer..." Archie said but stops himself. "This summer what?" I ask and Dad looks at me and shakes his head so I stop talking. Archie doesn't say anything. "That's it? We don't talk anymore?" Dad asked "Dad." Archie said "I would never force you to play football. I don't care if you play football. And you don't have to work with me or for me, ever again. But some advice, man-to-man? These decisions that you're making now, son, they have consequences. They go on to form who you are and who you'll become. Whatever you decide, be confident enough in it that you don't have to lie." Dad said grabbing his beer kissing my forehead before walking inside.

"Don't start, Dria." Archie said "Oh I'm going to because Archie, we need to talk. I don't care if you say anything but you're going to listen to what the hell I have to say." I say walking over to him. "Fine, whatever." Archie said sitting back down on his stool. "Arch, you've changed after last summer." I say and he cuts me off. "Like you haven't? You don't think I've not noticed how you've changed since July 4th?" Archie asked "Actually I'm shocked you noticed that. Archie, my best friend died!" Tears start clouding my eyes so I blink them away. "Jason died, Archie. So I'm sorry if me grieving has changed me." I take a second to collect myself and make the tears go away. I look up at Archie over I do. "You not talking to me as much as you did doesn't bother me. But you not talking to dad? That pisses me off more than you could ever imagine. Dad is trying his best to raise us and owning the company. So basically what I'm trying to say is Dad didn't do anything to deserve what just happened." I walk into the house. "Dad, I'm leaving." I say

"You didn't have to do that." Dad said "Yes I did, Dad. He had no reason to say anything he did to you. I'll be back later, okay?" I ask and he nods. "Don't be too late." Dad said and I nod. I pull up to the Whyte Wyrm and walk in. I see Sweets, Toni and Fangs at the pool table and walk over to them. "I'm so done with younger siblings." I say leaning against the pool table. "What did he do this time?" Toni asked "He was being a dick to my dad. So I ended up yelling at him and then left to come here." I say

I walk in the dance with Kevin by my side. I see multiple posters of Jason everywhere making me inhale sharply. "You okay?" Kevin asked "Yeah. I knew there would be pictures but I wasn't expecting this." I say and Archie, Betty and Veronica walks in behind us. "Well, it's not the Met Ball." Veronica said "Hey. When do you have to let Coach Clayton know about football?" Betty asked "This weekend." Archie said "Guys, can't we just liberate ourselves from the tired dichotomy of jock/artist? Can't we, in this post James Franco world, be all things at once?" Veronica asked "I've been working on it, Veronica." Archie said "Work faster. I'm getting punch." Veronica said "Ronnie." I say "Dria. Hey! You look beautiful." Veronica said "You as well. Going to get punch?" I ask "Yeah. You want to go with?" Veronica asked and I see Kev waving me over.  "I would but Kev is waving me over like an absolute madman." I say and she laughs. "Well you should go handle that." Veronica said smiling and I walk over to Kev and B.

"What, Kev? What is so important that you waved me over like a mad man?" I ask "You will never believe who just propositioned me in the bathroom." I raise my eyebrow at him. "Give you a hint... His name may be Moose, but I'd describe a certain appendage of his as horse-like." Kev said and I look at him in shock. "Moose? Like jock football Moose?" I ask "Yes. The exact same one." Kev said "Oh my god." I say laughing and Cheryl walks over to me. "Need you." Cheryl said grabbing my arm dragging me over to the stage with her. "Cheryl, what is going on?" I ask "You're standing on stage with me." Cheryl said "Okay, great." I say and she stands at the microphone and I stand beside her as she loops her arm through mine. "Good evening, friends. Are you all having a good time?" People cheer. "As honorary chairperson and de facto queen of tonight's semi formal, it is my great pleasure to introduce this evening's main entertainment. To know them is to be obsessed with them. Though they usually perform their own material, tonight, they're making an exception and debuting a cover of the song my parents claim they were listening to the night Jason and I were conceived." I force myself to not make a face. "This one's for you, JJ. I give you Josie and the Pussycats." Cheryl said and we go off stage.

Kev walks over to me once I walk away from Cheryl. "Wanna dance? Since I am technically your date." Kev said and I laugh. "Sure." I say and we walk to the dance floor. Betty looks over at us while she's dancing with Archie. "Do it." Kev and I mouth to her. "Oh my god." Kev mumbled to me. "I know." I say looking back at him. "So why didn't you bring one of the mystery guys you told me about?" Kev asked "Well one, I kinda couldn't unless you count the millions of posters in this place as me actually bringing him." I say and Kev gasped. "Jason was one of the mystery guys? Which one?" Kev asked "The first one." I say smiling a little. "The ring one?" Kev asked "Yeah. But you can't say a word to anybody, especially Betty." I say "I won't. You know I don't tell anyone of what we talk about. What about the second one?" Kev asked "The second one isn't really welcome on this side of town. Not that it stops him. Plus his way of dressing up is either a flannel or a different leather jacket." I say "He's a Southside Serpent?" Kev asked quietly to make sure no one hears him. "Yes. He is. Now I think I'm going to head out. I can't be in here anymore with the amount of Jason posters there are and a milkshake from Pops is calling my name." I say and he laughs. "Alright. Have fun and be careful." Kev said "You too. Have fun with Moose." I say smirking. "Dria." Kev said "What? I figure that's who you're gonna go talk to once I leave anyways." I say

I walk into Pops and see Jug in our normal booth. "You left the dance early." Jug said when he sees me and gets up to let me sit in my spot when it's just the two of us. I put my feet across his lap leaning against the wall. "There was too many pictures of Jason. So I had to leave." I say and Pop walks up to us. "Alex, your usual?" Pop asked and I nod smiling at him. "Please. Thanks Pop." I say "Coming right up." Pop said smiling. Jug and I sit in the booth for awhile. At midnight Archie walks into Pops and speaks to Pop who motions over to us.

"It was midnight, and my old friend Archie Andrews arrived at the one place in town that will still open. He was looking for the girl next door. Instead, he found me and Dria."

"Uh, can I sit, Jughead?" Archie asked "If you want." Jug said and Archie sits down. "What are you working on?" Archie asked "My novel. It's about this summer, and Jason Blossom." Jug said "Seventeen years old and how will he be remembered? As captain of the water polo team?" Archie asked "The Aquaholics? Considering how he died, probably not." Jug said and I flinch as flashes of Clifford shooting Jason run through my head. "No, what I mean is... was he doing everything he was supposed to do, everything he wanted. I mean, did he even know what that was?" Archie asked "Coach Clayton was in here talking to Pop Tate. Varsity. Does that make you, what, Mr. Popular Football God now?" Jug asked "No. In fact, I'm kind of terrified I lost my best friend tonight." Archie said and I scoff. "If you mean Betty, whatever happened just talk to her. You know, it'd go a long way. Would've gone a long way with me." Jug said and Archie nods before leaving.

"And so, it wasn't one heart that broke that night. It was two. And the night was far from over. By morning, everyone would be talking, texting, and posting about it. We'd all be feeling it. That world around us had changed, maybe forever. That Riverdale wasn't the same town as before. That it was a town of shadows and secrets now. On Monday, the autopsy on Jason's body would take place. And on Tuesday halfway through fifth period, the first arrest would be made."

My phone rings so I answer it. "Hello?" I ask "Jason was shot. I found his body at Sweetwater with Moose." Kev said "Wait, what? Kev slow down." I say "I was at Sweetwater with Moose and we found Jason's body at the edge of the river. He had a bullet wound in his head." Kev said and I push Jug to get up and I quickly get up. "I'm on my way." I say handing up. "Dria? What's wrong?" Jug asked and I walk out of Pops not even answering Jug as I get on my bike and drive towards Sweetwater with tears clouding my vision. I see everyone standing by the water and immediately go straight towards Cheryl. "Cheryl." I say wrapping my arms around her. Tears are running down my face as I see the police pulling Jason's body wrapped up in a body bag. She wraps her arms around me. "This isn't good. They're going to come for us." Cheryl whispered "I know." I whisper

After leaving Sweetwater, I go straight to the Whyte Wyrm. Toni, Sweet Pea, and Fangs were at the pool table. "Hey, Lexi. You look beautiful." Toni said "Thanks. Where's the boss?" I ask "In his office. Everything okay, Darlin?" Sweet Pea asked "Everything's fine. I'll be down in a few." I make my way upstairs. "FP! Open this fucking door!" I yell pounding on the door. He opens the door. "What's wrong?" FP asked letting me into his office. "What's wrong?" I laugh. "What's wrong? Why didn't you tell me you were dumping Jason's body?" I ask and he looks down. "You know." FP said

"Yes I know. Keller's son found his body and called me while I was with Jug at Pops. So why the fuck did you not tell me?" I ask "I didn't want to ruin your time at the semi formal." FP said "Well that was ruined anyways. There was posters of my dead best friend all over the place and I couldn't bring the one person I wanted to because, well he's a serpent." I say "You mean Sweet Pea?" FP asked "Yeah. Who else would I mean?" I ask "I don't know. Just needed clarification." FP said and I roll my eyes. "I'm going back downstairs. After seeing Jason's body again, I need a drink." I say "Don't drink too much." FP said "I don't make any promises." I say walking out of his office and he follows me. He steps to the railing. "Sweet Pea don't let her drink too much." FP said and I scoff. "Okay, FP." Sweets said

Hope y'all like this chapter. It may be a little bit before I get the second chapter published because of college but I'm on break at the moment so I'm hoping that I get some updates done.
