True Feelings

Sam sat on the front patio of his house. There was a chill in the air that caused the blonde to put on the biggest sweater he's got. No matter how much Alex insisted that he wear a jacket, Sam always preferred hoodies, sweaters.

Sam checked his phone for the fourth time now, anxiously waiting for some kind of update from Colby. The brunette said he'd be there in 10 minutes, that was eight minutes ago.

The early night air was filled with the sound of Sam anxiously tapping his foot against the bottom stair of his patio. "What am I going to tell him..." His words were quiet.

The loud text tone from his phone caused him to jump, the sudden sound startling him.

Colby: Close by

Sam let out a sigh of relief as he pocketed his phone once again.

About three minutes later the familiar sound of a skateboard skating up the road sent Sam's heart rate up. The blonde stood up from where he was sitting on the patio, taking a step down to be on the ground level. He reached out and leaned against the wall beside him for support.

He watched as Colby appeared at the end of his street, casually boarding down the road in the light of the street lamps. He turned into Sam's driveway, he kicked his board up and grab it with his hand. "Hello Samuel" Colby tried to act serious but he cracked up before he could even each the blonde. "I don't know what the was... heh, anyway, what's up? Is everything okay?" His mind started to race, he hadn't even begun to think about what if there was an emergency. Colby just assumed Sam wanted to talk.

"What? No, everything is okay! Well -uh, kinda... We need to talk" Sam knew those words were usually used for a couple on the verge of a breakup, but those were the only words that surfaced in his head.

"Oh... Okay. Well... What's going on?" Sam sat down on the first step, Colby quickly sat beside him. They sat with space in between them, but if Sam moved his knee just far enough it would hit Colby's knee.

Now isn't the time...

Sam thought to himself before he realized Colby was waiting for him to start talking.

"So... I've been wanting to tell you this for a long while now" He started without meeting Colby's eyes. "Colby, ever since the day you saved me back at the beach- I, um... I've liked you." Sam finally met Colby's eyes, they stayed emotionless until they changed to match the smile over his lips.

"Yeah man. I like you too" Colby smiles happily before Sam shakes his head.
"No, Colby... I like you, like you" His voice was nervous.

In response, Colby just blinked, letting the news settle over him. "Oh..." Now it was the brunette who was staring off into the distance.

"I-I just thought you should know" Sam turned to look the merman.

Colby let out a small nervous laugh, shaking his head. "Sam, that's cool and all... But you know I'm dating Jessie right?" His voice quickly became serious. He stood up and off the step, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Colby, please, I just wanted to tell you. It's been eating away at me since the day we met" Sam's voice became shaky, he slowly stood up beside Colby.

"What's the difference? Now it's going to be eating away at me!" Colby tossed his hands down by his side.

There was a sudden buzz that came from Colby's pocket, he immediately checked it. "I've gotta go..." Were the last things he said before grabbing his board and leaving Sam alone with his thoughts.

The blonde simply watched as Colby left. Once his crush was out of sight he sat back down on the step, raked his hand through his hair then let out a heavy sigh.

Sam's eyes grew teary as he thought about what he just did.

Alex looked out from her bedroom window, she watched as Colby left their property. He'd only been here for maybe 10 minutes, which can only mean one thing. "Shit" She cursed as she ran out of her room.

The older sister sprinted down the stairs, missing the last 2 and landing with a thump as she ran out the door. The first thing she saw was her only brother sitting on the patio. His eyes looked like they were glazed over, no tears had fallen yet, but it looks like they might.
"Hey... Sam, what happened?" She questioned when she sat beside him.

His voice was shaky but serious, "It's just like I told you... He's dating Jessie".

"Hey can we talk?" his voice blurted before his girlfriend even got the chance to say hello.

"Isn't that what we're doing right now?" Jessie's voice rang out through Colby's earbuds as he stopped to let a car go by.

"No... No, I mean like face to face. I need to talk to you. Are you free right now?". The merman's mind was racing.

Sam, my best friend... Has a crush on me?

Since when was Sam gay?

Jessie said something, but he didn't hear "Sorry what?".

"I said, where do you wanna meet?"

"The Moon Pool"

"Sam? Really? If anything I would've thought it'd be Corey, just cause he has a girlfriend doesn't mean he still can't swing for the other team" Jessie's tail swayed slowly behind her in the blue water of the magical Moon Pool.

Colby, on the other hand, had just removed his shirt and was joining Jessie in the water. "Yeah, I know. I mean I knew we were close, but I had no clue he thought of me like that". The merman stepped off the dry ground and onto the ledge that lined the pool, the water tingled his toes as he sat down on the edge. He looked down at Jessie as his legs turned into a blue scaled tail."I don't know what I'm going to do about this... about him".

Jessie turned around to face him, putting her elbows on the edge to keep her up. "I don't know how much I like you hanging out with someone else who has a thing for you". Her voice was shy as if she was scared to voice her opinion.

"What? Why? He's my best friend?" Colby's brow ruffled as he looked down at his girlfriend from the place he was sitting on the edge. He watched as her hand moved up and rested on top of his.

"Because I don't want anyone else getting thoughts while I'm not there". Her hand moved up his arm.

"Oh come on, you know nothing will happen right?" Colby looks at her with a look as she retracts her hand, suddenly getting defensive.

"What? Colby if you haven't noticed, you're stupid hot. I'm surprised no one else has tried to make a move" Her voice grew shy as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Colby let out a little huff through his nose as he slipped off the ledge and floated towards Jessie.

"Babe..." He gave her the puppy dog eyes as she rolled her pink ones. Colby put his hands on her shoulders and waited until her eyes met his.

"You know you don't have to worry right? I'm yours baby". She slowly moved her hands to Colby's hips as he closed the gap between the two. His lips brushed against hers as his magically coloured ocean eyes met her dark pink ones.

"How did I ever get so lucky? It's almost too good to be true" With that Jessie could help it when the edge of her lip twitched, begging to curl into a smirk, but she had to keep going, had to keep kissing him.

Soon...

~

"So the full moon is next Friday" Jessie started the conversation while she sat down by the water's edge, wrapping Colby's sweater over her shoulders.

"Yeah... Why?" Colby asked curiously as he pulled his shirt back over his head.

"Well I was hoping I could help you" The mermaid started as her boyfriend took a seat beside her.

"Help me with what?" He questioned.

"The full moon! How do you think I navigate it so well, I've learned to block out its power, now it's no longer a threat to me" She takes his hand in her and begins playing with the various rings he has displayed on his fingers.

"Really? That'd be great! Oh my god, the full moon has been such a pain in my ass. How did you do it?" Colby raises an eyebrow.

"Don't worry about it, I'll show you. You don't have any plans on Friday right? You shouldn't since it's the full moon".

Colby took out his mental calendar and looked at what he had planned on Friday.

He's always spent the full moons with the boys, with Sam.

No, I don't need their help.

They don't even know what it's like!

"Nope! No plans" Colby informed Jessie while he slowly slid his hand out of her grasp and began fidgeting with the ring on his index finger. It was a ring that had a chain in the middle that would spin, it was first ring, one of his favourites.

"Good, it feels so good knowing that damned moon doesn't hold so much power over you," She says as she shakes her fist at the almost full moon above them.

"I bet" Colby leaned in and planted a kiss on her forehead before taking her hand once again, but this time gently pulling his chainring onto her middle finger.

The metal was warm against the mermaids' skin. Seeing the ring shin on her finger caused her lips to curve into a smile. "Awe, thank you" She kissed her boyfriend as he ran his hand through her hair which only had a quarter of its pink magical colour left.
