Third person's pov
"Get out of my room! These maids are so annoying. I don't even know why mum employed them. They are all bunch of illiterates. Poor people." Nawal spat, angrily. "They completely spoilt my mood. Let me go and eat downstairs." She said and hissed.
"Madam! Hajiya sent me to call you." Aisha, one of the maids said, shaking in fear. All the maids are afraid of Nawal. No one wants to get on her bad side.
"Okay." She replied,dismissively.
"Hello mum." She went inside the room and sat on bed.
"Mamana(my mother) how are you?" Her mum inquired.
"I am fine mum." She murmured.
"You don't look fine to me. Are you sure you are okay? Did you have an argument with anyone? Is it one of your friend? Or the maids?" She bombarded her with questions.
"Mum!" She shrieked. I see no reason why she is asking questions. I told her i am fine. What else does she want? "Look i am fine. Nothing is wrong with me." She replied, nonchalantly.
"I was just worried about you my dear. You know i don't like seeing you angry."
"Why did you call me?" She purposely ignored her mother's last words. She see no reason why she should be worried about her.
"Your aunt called." Her mum replied, calmly. Honestly she doesn't like the way her daughter talks to her but she can't do anything to it since she spoiled her right from childhood. Only if she had corrected her when she did something wrong.
"So?" She sneered. What is my fu***** business if my aunt calls my mum?
"You didn't even ask which of your aunt called." I have to do something about nawal's attitude. I can't keep watching her like this.
"Mum! What is my business with that? All of them are not important to me. So why should i ask?"
"How can you say my sisters are not important to you. Do you even know what you are saying?" Her mum asked, angrily. Nawal seriously need to stop behaving like this.
"Fine! Who called and why did she call?" She inquired, insouciantly.
"Falmata called. She said Affan is coming to see you today." Her mum replied, calmly.
"Alright" she muttered and left the room. Her mum shook her head in disappointment. She is paying for her mistakes now. Only if she had corrected Nawal when she did something bad. She was only pampering her. She had no idea she will turn out like this.
"Yes! Yes! Yes! I am so happy! Finally he is coming to see me. I can't wait!" Nawal yelled, immediately she entered her room. I can't believe this. I am so happy. I felt like giving my mum a tight hug when she told me Affan is coming, but of course I didn't. I don't want her to know I love him. "Let me quickly take my bath and do my makeup. "I didn't even ask for the time he is coming." She mumbled and entered the bathroom to take her bath.
...........
"Assalamu'alikum aunty fadeela" Affan muttered, immediately he entered the livingroom.
"Wa'alaikum sallam,Affan. How are you? How is your mum?" Nawal's mother inquired.
"I am fine. My mum is also fine. She sent her regards." Affan replied, smiling.
"Please sit down." She said, smilling broadly. "Let me get you something to eat."
"There is no need ma. I am fasting." He uttered, politely.
"Are you sure you are fasting? Or you don't want to eat in my house? Don't be shy oo. You are going to be my son in law soon." She said, jocularly.
"I will eat some other time." He muttered with a small smile.
"No problem. You are always welcome son inlaw." She said with a wink.
"Thank you." He forced a smile. Only if this woman knows he hates her daughter. I wish I can just run away from this place.
"Let me call Nawal for you. I will be right back." She shasayed away.
"I wish I never came here." Affan mumbled and fixed his gaze on the television.
After 20minutes of waiting for her,she finally catwalked into the livingroom.
"Hey." She waved.
"Hello." He replied without looking up from his phone. I can't believe I will be getting married to this girl.
"Maimuna! Maimuna! Maimuna!" Nawal yelled,angrily.
An older woman in her late sixties rushed inside the livingroom, shaking in fear. "You..you..called..me." The woman stuttered.
"Yes I called you. What took you so long. Why didn't you answer me quickly?" Nawal asked, angrily.
"Am sorry. I...I...was cleaning the kitchen. Please forgive me." The woman apologised. Affan watched in shock how the woman was shaking in fear. He knows Nawal has no respect for anyone, but he never knew she was so disrespectful towards elders.
"Anyways, why didn't you serve my guest." She asked, looking at the woman in a disgusting way.
"I told her I don't need anything." Affan replied on behalf of the woman. "You can go back to your room and rest." He said, dismissively to the woman.
She hesitated, but left after Affan assured her he will take care of everything.
"Who gave you the right to do that?" Nawal asked, booming with anger.
"I gave myself the right to do that." He replied her, calmly.
"Who the hell do you think you are? How dare you?" She can't believe the nerve of this guy.
"Do not ever talk to me like that."
"And who are you? I will talk to you anyhow I like. Get that into your thick skull." She said with an eye roll.
"What sort of human being are you? Why are you so arrogant? Do you realise that woman you talked to anyhow is old enough to be your mother? Do you know the implication of your actions. Why are you like this?" He asked, giving her a scornful look.
Nawal was taken aback by his outburst. No one. Absolutely no one has ever talked to her like that. For the past 26years of her existence,no one has ever talked to her like that.
"What is happening? I heard your voices from upstairs. What's the problem?" Mrs fadeela asked, immediately she entered the livingroom.
"It nothing serious. We were just arguing abou..."
"Why are you lying. Tell her the truth you liar." Nawal spat, angrily.
"Nawal! How dare you call him a liar. He is your future husband for God's sake. Is this how you talk to someone you will spend the rest of your life with?" Her mum asked, angrily.
"Wow! Wow! We aren't even married, but you are supporting him already. What sort of a mother are you. A mother that can't support her daughter."
"Nawal!" Her mum bellowed and slapped her hard across the face.
"Mum! Did you just slap me because of your nephew?" She asked with teary eyes. My mum has never raised her hand on me since the day I was born. How can she do that now. Just for her nephew? Is there more to this than I know?
"Yes i slapped you and I will slap you again and again if you keep behaving like this." Her mum replied, angrily.
"I can't believe this." She murmured and left the livingroom angrily.
"Nawal! Nawal! Nawal! Come back here. How dare you walk out on me."
"I will get going ma." Affan muttered, politely.
"Am so sorry. I don't know what got into her. I am so sorry." Mrs fadeela apologised.
"It okay." He gave her a small smile and left the house.
"This is hard than I thought. I have failed as a mother. I have failed." Mrs fadeela sobbed.
"Please stop crying hajiya. You didn't fail as a mother. Nawal is just being childish. Please stop crying." Maimuna,Nawal's nanny consoled.
"No! I have failed terribly. If you are telling me the truth, why is your daughter not like mine. Why is your daughter not mannerless like mine. I have failed.I have failed. I am so ashamed of myself." She sobbed harder.
"Please don't say that. Nawal is not mannerless. She just needs someone to guide her through the right path. Please do not blame yourself. She will changed." Maimuna, assured.
"When will she change? When exactly will she change? When it too late? I have failed,Goggo. I have failed. I have failed as a mother,Goggo." She said, shaking her head. "I have never for once disrespected you in this house. Why does Nawal disrespect you so much? You carried her when she was a baby. You bathed her when she was still a baby. Why does she disrespect you so much? I heard everything that happened between her and Affan here. I am tired of her attitude. I am tired."
"Please getup and clean your face. Nawal will change. I believe she will. You don't want Nawal's dad to see you like this,or do you? So please clean your tears. I will talk to her. I believe she will change. It might take time, but she will eventually change."
"Are you sure she will?" She inquired, worriedly.
"She will change." Maimuna insisted.
"Thank you so much." Mrs fadeela gave her a tight hug. The woman has always helped her. She is like a sister to her,not her daughter's nanny.
"I will also make sure she changes her way." Her mum said with determination.
What do you think about Nawal?
Is her mother at fault or not?
