Umair took a deep breath, immediately turning the heat in the car on.
"I don't understand how you eat ice cream in this weather?" he rubbed his large hands together as he glanced at the woman sitting beside him.
Her eyes sparkled, as she held her cup of chocolate hazelnut chunked ice cream in her her left hand, her diamond rings sparkling in the moonlight. She turned to look at him.
"You're so boring" she rolled her eyes, "I don't know why I married you" Naina scooped a spoon full of ice cream, studding it into her mouth, almost moaning as the rich taste of hazelnut and chocolate filled her taste buds.
Reversing his car out of the parking lot of LULU'S ICE CREAM, Umair chuckled "you love me, honey" he took her right hand d into his, causing the spook in her hand to fall on to her white pajama pants. She glares at the man beside her as she grabbed a tissue from the dashboard, wiping away the brown treat before it stained her silk pants.
"I don't know why I do." Naina smiled at her husband as he places his hand on her stomach, feeling her child kick under its father's warm hand. "I love you guys." Umair snuck a glance at his wife as he drove. "you do that is why you took me out for ice cream at," Naina looked "11:47 at night" she scooped up another spook of ice cream that has melted and offered a bite to her husband. She shrugged her shoulders and ate the sweet treat when her husband denied the bite, smiling as she felt the baby kick in enjoyment.
The black car zoomed through the dark night. The voice of Ed Shreen filled the car as Naina hummed along to the tune of the song as she looked out the window. Her eyes widened and an excited gasp left her lips as she turned her body towards Umair. "Can we please go to to park?" Umair glanced at his wife with wide as to make sure she hadn't gone crazy, "it's -3⁰ outside and you want to give to the park?" Umair spoke, as she made a U turn as they passed the park. Naina's eyes sparked as she noticed her husband turning their car towards the park. Umair parked his black Audi next to curb by the park. The car stopped, and the engine was turned off. He reached his hands towards the back of the car, grabbing the brown blanket from the seat. He got out the car and walked swiftly to the passenger side of the car. The door opened and Umair reached out to take his wife's hands into his as he helped her out of the car. The chilly air caused Naina to shiver, but soon she was wrapped in warmth as Umair wrapped the blanket around her body. He walked her to the park bench and sat down with her. His wife laid her head on his shoulder.
Umair looked out to the swings. The image of a face flashed through his mind. His heart clenched as he remembered the brown eyes that would sparkle each time he'd pushed her on the swings, the sweet laugh that echoed in his ears as he remembered how she would laugh when he would chase her. Then the image of her redden eyes filled his mind, he remembered the rage he felt as the man he trusted her with send a slap to her face.
Naina winced as Umair's grip slightly tightened on her waist. She glanced up at his face, watching raw emotions flash through his eyes as they stared at the swings of the park.
"Umair?" She reached out towards him, Umair glanced at his wife as he blinked his eyes. He hummed in response. "what happened?" She rested her hand on his cheeks, feeling the light beard that had grown there. Umair took a deep breath as he whispered one word, "Hoorain."
Naina stared at her husband, wiping away the single tear that fell from his honey eyes, "I don't know if she's alive or not, I don't know what more torture they put her through." He sighed. Naina took her husband hands into hers, rubbing small circles on his hands with her thumb. "Have faith in Allah," she gripped his hands, "Allah always helps the oppressed." She closed her eyes as she cuddled into her husband's side.
She didn't know much about Hoorain, just from what her brother and husband had mentioned to her. She knew that was beautiful from how Umair described her. She remembered the day when Umair came crashing into her brother's apartment, all bruised and battered. He cried out to her brother.
A few moments later, Naina felt Umair pick her up. She opened her eyes as she stared up at her husband. Truly, she was blessed. Allah had given her someone who treated her right, respected her, gave her her rights, and most of all, loved her.
He slowly placed her on the ground by the car as he noticed she was awake. He quickly opened her door, helping his wife in. He pulled the belt across her bump, buckling her up. He wrapped the blanket around her once again. Getting into the already warm car, he started the engine and began the 26 minute drive back home.
Nania reached out and turned the radio on. The tune of one on the Jonas Brothers song filled the car. Umair smiled as he watched his wife mumble the words to the song to herself as she tapped her bump as they drove up the bridge that led them home. Rain had now fallen rapidly.
"Umair, stop the car!" The car abruptly stopped at the curb of the road as Naina's panicked voice filled his ears, "what happened!? Is the baby okay?" Umair's eyes searched his wife to see of she was hurt. Her eyes stared out the window. His gaze followed hers at they fell upon a woman who stood at the edge of the bridge, her feet balancing on the railing. There was a pool of blood underneath her as her body shook.
Alarmed, Umair rushed out his car. He turned to look at his wife who had also gotten out of the car and was staring up at him with wide eyes. He looked back at the woman, who looked as if she would jump, so he called out,
"Stop!" He screamed, and he ran towards her. "don't do it! Nothing is worth dying." As the woman came to a reaching distance, Umair reached his hands out to grab right when her legs left the railing. A scream escaped Naina's mouth as she watched as the woman let go, almost fall.
Umair pulled her away from the bridge. He stared at the back of the woman as a familiar scream and a familiar cry filled the air.
"Let me go!" The familiar voice cried, "I don't want to live" Umair slowly turned the weeping woman to face him. He stared at her tiny nose, the almond-shaped eyes, the pink trembling lips as he pulled her into his chest, breathing out one name, "Hoorain"
Hoorain's cries quiet down as her wide eyes gazed at the man who's arms were wrapped around her, the eyes she remembered so well searched her face as familiarity filled both of them. "Bhai" she whispered the nickname and placed her head on her big brother's chest, feeling her lose control of her body and senses. Her tears had stopped falling as rain continued to pour. "Ya Allah," he breathed out "what have they done to you?" He whispered as he stroked his baby sister head.
Naina took small steps towards her husband, wrapping her jacket tighter as the droplets of cold water fell off the hood, unknown to why her husband clutched the woman close to him. As she got closer, she watched as her husband shook the woman's body and cried out her name.
Umair's eyes widened as he saw Hoorain's eyes roll back as she lost consciousness. "Hoorain?" He patted her cheeks, trying to wake her up.
Naina watched on horrified as she cried out his sister's name while shaking her limp body to wake her up. "Umair we need to take her to the hospital." She spoke with urgency.
Umair wiped his tears and picked his sister up and carried her towards the car. Opening the back door, she played her down, wrapping her up with the blue blanket that was placed there. He closed the door of his Audi. He turned around and saw that his wife was making her way to the car. Umair walked towards her, wrapping his arms around her. He helped his 7 month wife to the car. Helping her in, he ran to the passenger side of the car and drove.
"she will be okay" Naina whispered' "have hope in Allah."
All Umair could do was nod his head as a drove. Hoping and praying to Allah that his sister was fine.
