"Jeno?" Haechan called as he strode his way into the tavern, his near-high-heeled boots clicking on the rough wood planks of the floor.
"Is that any way to address me?" Jeno spoke lowly, not looking up from his drink. Haechan swallowed and took off his hat, the feather swishing at the movement and his many accessories jingling merrily.
"Captain," Haechan addressed and Jeno finally lifted his gaze. "we think we found the boy who's been leaching treasure off of us whenever we dock at the north port." He stated as he set his hat securely on his head again. Jeno hummed in interest as he took another swig of his Guinness, setting down the cup and setting a single gold coin beside it before standing, leaning a bit on his favored leg and motioning for Haechan to lead the way.
The walk to where the rest of the crew had caught the thief wasn't too far, but Jeno could still feel the way his metallic leg clicked and buckled on the uneven cobble of the old seaside town. It wasn't the most pleasant thing- to have a metal leg with their jobs and all- as the sea-salted air showed no mercy on the prosthetic -but it was much better and more efficient than the classic peg leg he was offered by his boss after the injury.
Haechan swung the door to the old market supply room open, the rank smell of seafood and a frantic-looking Jisung greeting him right off the bat. The youngest of his crew rushed forward at the sight of him, practically tripping over the uneven floorboards, his thin tail swishing to find balance.
"Careful now," Jeno warned gently as he helped the mouse hybrid steady himself. It was no secret to the others that he had a soft spot for the boy, but they refrained from teasing their Captain about it out of fear of becoming fish food once they set out again. "Where is this thief?" Jeno asked as he looked further into the room. It was poorly lit, and the roof was leaking still from the rain early that morning, the entire place being damp and muggy, but it was nothing they couldn't handle. Jisung lifted a careful finger and pointed to a certain spot where the back of a chair could be seen, seated directly under a stray bulb that dangled precariously from the ceiling.
Jeno could see Renjun standing in front of the boy in the chair with his hands on his hips, watching Jeno with pointed expectancy, and he could make out Mark sitting on one of the crates in the corner, presumably sharpening one of their daggers from the look of it, with Chenle seated on the floor beside the eldest, flipping a coin he must've snagged from one of their chests of riches.
Jeno took measured, confident steps towards the chair, grabbing onto the back of it and listening to the way the boy in the chair's breath hitched.
"So then, you're the cheating filthy rat who's been stealing from me and my crew, hmm?" Jeno hummed as he finally stood in front of the boy, who looked up at him with big eyes- or, a big eye. Only one of his eyes showed, the other covered by an eye patch that Jeno found to be fitting for some reason. He watched the boy blink up slowly at him as he observed his figure, trying to read every detail. He wasn't well dressed, nor was he flaunting copious bracelets, rings, and other jewelry. His clothing was lackluster as well, a simple long sleeve white blouse, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and the first three buttons opened to reveal his unmarked chest, with black pants to match that clung to his thighs alluringly. Jeno had to admit he was stunning, but then he noticed the bandana cap that sat unevenly atop the boy's head and he frowned, reaching out and pulling the knot undone easily. The boy opened his mouth to protest, hands instinctively struggling against the rope restraints, but it was too late, and Jeno tilted his head.
Two soft-looking bunny ears stood upright on the boy's head, and Jeno hummed.
"A bunny hybrid?" He questioned, crouching down to meet the boy's gaze. "Cute." He said simply. The hybrid swallowed. "What's your name kid?"
"Jaemin." The boy said, his voice clear and unwavering despite his slightly shaken appearance. Jeno smiled at the younger to try and help steady him, taking his hat off in an attempt to soften his appearance. He wasn't sure why, but he felt this underlying feeling of responsibility towards Jaemin, felt the need to keep him safe from harm- maybe it was his tiny stature and the implications of his theft given how little he seemed to have. Or maybe he was just whipped.
Maybe both.
"So what brought a little bunny like you down to theivin' at the docks then?" Jeno questioned gently.
"Yea, just cuz this is the first time we caught yah doesn't mean its the first time we seen you theiven' round our docks!" Renjun snapped, his accent getting thicker in his anger. Haechan gave him a look and he crossed his arms with a huff.
"I just needed some money for bread sir, I didn't mean any harm." Jaemin said, his voice daring and his eye flickering with mischief. The use of the word 'sir' despite the obvious closeness of their ages did things to Jeno that he would never admit, but he just brushed it off and smiled down at the boy.
"Well, you caused more harm than you think Jaemin," Mark said, standing from his spot and slowly walking towards the chair, freshly sharpened dagger in hand. "the gold we had was just the perfect amount we needed to meet our quota for the month, and now cuz of your little stunt we'll have to be back on the sea for another god knows how long!" Mark exclaimed, pointing the blade at Jaemin's throat as he spoke. The younger swallowed and Jeno frowned.
"But don't you like it?" Jaemin asked and all of them looked at him now. Jaemin just looked around before continuing. "Sailing, I mean? Isn't it nice? To be free, go wherever you wanna go, sail the seven seas freely with the wind in your sails and the sun as your guide, danger at every turn, enemies lurking every city," Jaemin paused his rant when he noticed the way each of them seemed to be judging him and he shut his mouth.
Jeno raised a brow, gesturing for Mark to hand him the dagger, to which the older complied. He looked at Jaemin deeply as he stood up straight and began pacing slowly in front of him.
"You know, being a pirate isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's tedious, tiring, and dangerous almost seems too weak a word to describe the peril it could put you in." Jeno paused his pacing in front of Jaemin and put his hands on the armrests of the chair as he loomed over the younger. "How do you think I lost my leg?" He said, pulling his long coat out of the way to show the shining metal that disappeared into his boot. "I can tell you it wasn't just some unloading accident." He dropped his coat and took a couple of steps away from the chair, his back facing the boy as he thought, the only sounds being the slight creak of the old rotting wood holding up the small building, and the harsh call of seagulls outside, likely pestering a crew of fishermen coming in from the sea. "Boys, let's go. I'm sure he can figure his own way out. We need to report to the boss before he gets any more peeved by our absence." Mark scoffed at Jeno's words as he walked over, taking his dagger back with a fierce grip.
"For the first time since we anchored, I agree with you Jeno." Mark said with a feigned sweetness. "After all, there's only 'nough room for one cripple on my ship." The eldest sneered before he began storming out the front door that would lead out to the market. Jeno held his tongue at the remark, wanting to tell Mark off for 'disrespecting his captain', but he thought better of it since he didn't want to cost the crew their only ship. Jeno watched as the others followed Mark out into the market, all leaving without a word until finally, Haechan stood in the door. He turned to look at the older who remained unmoving in the storage room.
"You comin' captain?" Haechan asked from where he stood and Jeno just nodded.
"I'll be out in a bit, you guys go on ahead and look around the market for a bit, I'll come and get you in a second." Haechan hesitated, glancing between Jeno and then Jaemin who sat in the chair watching the ordeal, before he gave Jeno a warning look and left the small shack, the door creaking closed behind him.
As soon as the door was completely shut, Jeno let out a small sigh, turning around and going back over to where Jaemin sat. He crouched down behind the chair and pulled out his own dagger, beginning to saw away at the rope restraints the others had put him in.
"What are you doing?" Jaemin asked. Jeno remained silent a minute longer until the restraints were cut and Jaemin shook his hands out.
"Helping you out idiot- you told me you wouldn't let them catch you." Jeno said lowly and Jaemin hummed.
"Felt like having a little fun. It's so boring here when you leave, nothing but a town of touchy drunks and thieves." The younger pouted and Jeno scoffed playfully as he put away his dagger.
"Your one to talk." Jaemin hummed at that with a smile.
"Oh, but I just steal for bread, sir."
"Bullshit, I know where you spend your free days and it sure isn't by the bakers stall I can tell that much," Jeno said as he dug into one of his coat pockets. He pulled out a small cloth sack that jingled as he set it gently in Jaemin's lap. "That should hopefully keep you tied over until we're home again." Jaemin stared down at the bag of money, a frown overtaking his face as he avoided Jeno's gaze. The older crouched down and reached out to gently hold Jaemin's chin with his hand. "I'm sorry we were home so late bun, we got caught up off the bay of east island in some rocky weather that we weren't expecting, it set us off course more than we thought," Jeno explained, a new softness in his voice as he gazed gently into the hybrids dark eye. He held the others face and gently caressed his cheek with his thumb, watching the way the younger leaned into the touch. "but, I have news that might cheer you up?" Jaemin shook his head.
"Why can't I come with you. I'd listen, I'd be good, you and your crew would be able to help keep me safe, but I really can hold my own!" Jeno sighed and let his hand drop away from his face, standing up straight and looking down at the boy.
"You know why Jaem, it's too dangerous, and lord knows what the boss would think of another hybrid on our crew, Jisung and Renjun are already on thin ice just because of something they can't control," Jeno explained again, referring to the fox and mouse hybrids in the crew. Being a hybrid wasn't exactly seen as something very good in Sanlow, especially not downtown. In most countries in the world, hybrids were seen as something of royalty and high status, but in downtown slum areas like Sanlow, they were considered quite the opposite due to the snobbish stereotype, and it made finding work for these folk to be rather difficult. What work they did find was normally dirty and underpaid, hence why Jeno tried to stay on the downlow about his relationship with Jaemin. It was one thing to have hybrid crewmates because if push came to shove he could just call them his colleagues, but if everyone knew he was in a relationship with a hybrid, he feared what it may mean for his job- and for the rest of his crew. Jeno shook his head.
"Anyway, it sounds like we'll be here for a couple of days while the ship is being worked on a bit," Jeno began as he straightened his jacket and walked back towards the door. "Lay low and meet me in the tavern at 9? My treat. I'll get us a room at the inn across the street too." He offered. Jaemin titled his head.
"Won't the others get suspicious?" Jeno shrugged.
"If a guy like me said I was just sleeping around for fun with some of the girls from uptown who lost their way, I don't think there would be anything to suspect." Jaemin chuckled as he stood up and walked over to Jeno, reaching out and tracing a finger across one of the seems of Jeno's jacket.
"Then I get you all to myself tonight?" Jeno smiled and leaned down, giving Jaemin a light kiss on the nose.
"I'm all yours, bun." Jaemin's smile brightened as he stepped away, walking over with a new pep in his step and picking up the bandana from the floor. He wrapped it atop his head again like before to hide his ears and gave Jeno a small wink and a wave. Jeno nodded and finally swung open the door to head out into the market.
As he left though, Jaemin noticed something come fluttering out of one of Jeno's pockets. He walked over and picked it up. On the tattered looking yellowed paper in nicely inked handwriting that didn't look like Jeno's, was an offer that made Jaemin groan.
"If you can cash me 40% of your find, and somehow get away with it unscathed, I'll double whatever that 40% may be and it'll all be yours. Teach that greedy cheating son of a bitch that he isn't hot shit, and you'll be rewarded"
The note was signed by a man named 'Ten' and an address was scrawled on underneath it that made Jaemin sigh. Knowing his idiot boyfriend, he was gonna try and make this work, and he probably wasn't going to get away with it.
Jaemin rolled his eyes with a smile and shoved the paper into his pocket, feeling to be sure his pistols were still in their holsters before he ran out the back door of the supply room and into the alleys of the city.
...
"So you're gonna go talk to him on your own this time?" Chenle questioned in disbelief as he took a hungry bite of whatever meat skewer Jisung had just snatched for him. He let out a delighted sound and nodded at the hybrid, obviously pleased with the food. Jisung just gave a thumbs up and tried to act cool, but as per usual his tail gave away his excitement with a happy flick.
"Yeah, I just thought it would be easier if I went on my own, that way he won't try anything with you two or Haechan, and you'll have Chenle and Mark to protect you." Haechan raised a brow at that as he clipped a new earring he had gotten- correction: a new earring Mark had gotten for him -on.
"And how do we know you won't just pack up the cash for yourself and hit the road?" Haechan questioned, his hands finding his hips with sass in his tone. Jeno smiled.
"Don't worry pretty thing, I wouldn't do something like that. Do you think I plan on losing my other leg anytime soon?" He teased and Haechan grinned with a shrug. Mark scoffed a bit.
"Just be careful idiot, or else you might. Don't do anything you'll regret." Jeno turned and began walking away down the cobbled road with a wave.
"Yea yea, you too Mark." The eldest shook his head and hopped off of the stand he had sat on, spinning his dagger a couple of times before he began to walk. The rest followed on instinct, but Renjun spoke up.
"Well where to now?" He asked, his bushy tail brushing across the ground as he looked into the various booths and stalls at whatever they were selling. He watched Jisung artfully steal a lollipop from one of the stands when the shopkeep had their back turned and grinned thankfully when the sweet was handed to him.
"The boat." Mark said simply. "Something tells me we might need to make a quick escape."
...
"Well, here's the money." Jeno said with a smile as he set down three heavy bags on the ground in front of the man. "we'll continue on our endeavors to pay off our ever-growing debt in three days or so after the boat is fixed. Now, if you'll excuse me," Jeno began, giving a small bow and backing up towards the door of the room. He bumped into something and turned to see the two men who had escorted him standing in his way, both wearing stoic expressions. The man in the chair cleared his throat.
"Open the bags." He commanded one of his men. The man did as told, opening one of the bags and being greeted by shining pieces of gold and glimmering jewels of all sorts. The man only spared them a quick glance until he noticed his guard stepping away. "All of them." He clarified. The guard gave a small 'yes sir' and went to open the next bag, this one also full of gold. He looked up at his boss with a raised brow and the man gave a nod towards the last bag. The guard rolled his eyes, pulling his cutlass from its holster. He gave a swing at the bag, listening to it tear open and watching in dismay as nothing but rice came pouring out. Jeno's boss looked up at him slowly and the younger shrunk a bit from where he stood, watching as the man pulled out his gun. He shot at each of the remaining bags on the cart, rice pouring from each of them and spilling messily onto the floor like sand in an hourglass. Silence rang clear through the hall after that, everyone watching Jeno expectantly. Jeno just pressed his lips together and pointed at the rice as he bounced on his heels.
"You know your gonna have to clean that up, right?" He asked cheekily. The man growled and fired his gun towards Jeno who rolled towards one of the windows, pausing to look around for something heavy he could break it with. The guards in the room were surging towards him, and just when he was preparing to meet his demise, he heard a loud crash from behind him, glass flying around him in uneven shards and gunfire sounding beside him. He turned with surprise.
"Jaemin?" The younger kept shooting.
"You gonna jump or what?!" Jaemin asked, glancing back at the older who smiled, taking one of Jaemin's wrists and running towards the window. They jumped out into the pool that lay below, swimming across it and climbing out with ease. Jeno dismissed the slight discomfort in his prosthetic at the sudden coolness and ignored the ache it brought as he followed Jaemin, jumping over the nice hedges and climbing the white fence until they could run free in the grass.
They ran down the grassy hill quickly, Jaemin redirecting them somewhere that Jeno didn't recognize.
"Where are we-"
"Your legs gonna buckle up if we run all that way," Jaemin explained between pants as they ran up to one of the many horses that were stood outside of some venue. "Besides, horseback will be faster." Jeno smiled as he helped to hoist Jaemin onto the horse, following the younger up and sitting behind him.
"Shouldn't I lead the way?" Jaemin turned to him and raised a brow as he brought the reins down on the uneasy animal.
"Do you know how to ride a horse?" Jeno opened his mouth to answer before closing it again and Jaemin smiled. "Didn't think so." He remarked, guiding the horse onto the cobble path that led down the hill.
Jeno turned and saw the fast-approaching group of guards that were also on horseback. He gripped onto Jaemin a bit tighter as he watched them.
"You scared babe?" Jaemin teased. Jeno scoffed.
"No. Just wondering if you could ride this thing any faster." The younger hummed.
"Yeah, I thought you'd be saying that a bit later in the night, but looks like we'll be having a change of plans." He quipped back. Jeno grinned at the other, Jaemin just smiling proudly. "Where are we going anyway?" Jeno bit his lip in thought for a moment.
"The docks. We can probably hijack ourselves a boat to get away to north shore until I can get word of what happened to the others." Jaemin nodded, trying to hide his excitement as he raced towards the marketplace.
The horse galloped without care through the crowds of people, splitting the seas of men and woman, spilling carts and crates, making a mess of the whole marketplace that they were sure to remember, but they knew the guards would leave the place worse off with how many there were.
The horse reared up and Jaemin's eyes widened as they almost trampled a little boy picking an apple off the ground, his mother rushing over and snatching him out of the way before the horse could bring its hooves back down, shaking its head violently when Jaemin tried to guide it forward again.
"Shit, come on follow me." Jeno cursed, standing on the horse's back and mumbling an apology to the animal before he jumped onto the roof of one of the shops. Jaemin followed skillfully, his balance precise as he continued after Jeno, jumping from stall to stall towards the docks. Once they were closer, Jeno jumped down, making sure the younger followed safely as he leaped from post to post on the edge of the dock for a moment before landing on steady ground again.
"HEY! OVER HERE!" Jeno looked up at the call to see Haechan and Renjun waving from the ship, the large boat already pulling away from the dock a bit. Jeno looked at Jaemin.
"You first." He offered. Jaemin shook his head.
"No, you first. I don't want something to happen to you."
"Jaemin I won't-"
"Jeno, you and I both know you haven't been taking care of your leg lately, and the water earlier will make it buckle up easier, we're not risking it, just go." Jeno pressed his lips together and nodded before he ran towards the edge of the dock, leaping with full force until he landed with a secure grip on the ladder that had been tossed over the side. He climbed up enough and turned to watch as Jaemin did the same, successfully making it onto the ladder. They climbed up and Jeno helped Jaemin over onto the boat, both of them looking back at the guards on their horses rearing and neighing in displeasure as the two escaped them.
"Woooo we did it!" Jaemin said excitedly, not thinking as he hugged Jeno tightly. The older pulled away, cupping his face.
"Are you okay? Did the glass get you? Are you hurt?" Jaemin shook his head with a smile and Jeno let out a relieved sigh, kissing the youngers nose and holding him close again. "Idiot, you could've gotten hurt."
"You would've died if I weren't there, don't even." Jaemin mumbled against Jeno's chest.
"So then, care to explain what's going on?" Jeno's eyes shot open at the sound of Mark's voice, but he didn't let go of Jaemin, swallowing nervously as he thought of what to say.
"And don't try to make up excuses captain, cuz we've had enough of that." Haechan said teasingly. His voice seemed more curious and accepting than Mark's, and he could practically feel Renjun's glare on his back. He finally sighed and let go of Jaemin, turning and keeping hold of the youngers waist with one of his arms as he faced them.
"I'm sorry I haven't been transparent with you guys, but this is my boyfriend Jaemin."
"Boyfriend??!?! Not four hours ago you were questioning him like he was some high-end criminal!" Chenle exclaimed. Jeno nodded.
"That was all a lie. I've known Jaemin for a long time- almost eight years now I think. It's part of what always kept me tied to Sanlow, what kept me from freelancing with you guys." Jeno explained. "As you saw earlier, he's a bunny hybrid," Jeno explained, letting Jaemin take off the bandana cap and free his ears again. He winced internally at how badly that must hurt to wear all the time. "and because of that, I always kept him hidden away in Sanlow. I didn't want him to get hurt. Selfishly too, I didn't want to lose my job- or my crew." Jeno mumbled the last part and Haechan cooed.
"Aww we know you love us baby it's alright." Haechan teased. Jaemin looked shocked at the pet name and the older gave a small nod. "It's platonic hun, don't worry."
"Yeah, he says that to everyone." Mark added with an eye roll. Haechan cooed and walked over to pinch his cheeks, keeping the eldest distracted for a moment. Jeno looked at the other three. Jisung was just watching Jaemin carefully, and Renjun's stern expression softened to something of hurt.
"You didn't have to hide him from us Jeno." Renjun said gently. "There's multiple hybrids among the crew, we would never have hurt you or him- and we wouldn'tve let anything happen to him either. You should've just told us." He said, his fluffy fox tail curling around his leg and his ears folding a bit. Jeno looked at the ground and nodded a bit.
"He had good intentions at heart," Jaemin said, speaking for the first time to the others since they had gotten on the ship, and Jeno looked up at him, the younger's attention directed to Renjun. "always tried to keep me safe and happy." Renjun smiled and nodded.
"I'm glad he's treating you well. You two seem to deserve each other." Jaemin smiled sweetly and Jeno flashed an eye smile- the first one Renjun had seen in a long time. He remembered bitterly for a moment the days when he and Haechan used to work out elaborate pranks to coax that smile out of him, and he realized with a sense of jealousy that now Jaemin was the special boy who got the privilege of making him smile that way.
At least Jeno was happy.
"Well then, I guess we have another hybrid in the group," Mark mumbled grumpily, and the others smiled. "So then, captain Jeno, where to?" Jeno thought for a moment before he felt around in his pocket, eyes widening when he didn't find what he was looking for. Jaemin cleared his throat from beside him and Jeno turned to see the younger handing him a piece of paper- the paper he had been looking for. He smiled and muttered a 'thank you' before looking at the note.
"To Aria," Renjun gasped.
"Aria? As in the crown city off the shore of the black sea?" Jeno nodded and Renjun smiled, turning to Jisung with excitement. "Hear that Ji? For once we get to go somewhere that hybrids are respected!"Jeno smiled at the two who went back and forth after that, chatting happily about what they would do in the city and dragging an all-knowing well-traveled Chenle into the conversation. Mark was leading Haechan by the had to the upper deck to help steer the ship, which left Jaemin and Jeno on their own. Jeno turned to Jaemin with a smile before he leaned down and kissed the younger, a bit longer than they normally got to unless they were spending the night, but just as soft and gentle and loving as anything else Jeno would do for him. When they pulled away Jaemin smiled warmly before gently tapping the older's boot with his own.
"Let's go take a look at your prosthetic, shall we? I still know how to make that cream you liked if you have the proper ingredients around." Jeno smiled softly and nodded, taking Jaemin's hand and leading him towards the captain cabin.
"Hey, lovebirds," Renjun called "Don't be too loud, there are kids on board!" He teased and Jeno just shut the door softly behind them, ignoring the cries of protest from Jisung and Chenle trying to plead that they weren't kids anymore.
"So this is where you spend most of your days?" Jaemin asked. Jeno hummed and took off his coat and hat, hanging them on the coat hanger in the corner as he watched the younger look around. It was a cozy little room with bookshelves full of an assortment of filled journals and random books he had either snatched or written, a desk at one end covered messily in papers, maps, and opened ink, a chair sat behind it, other comfy looking chairs elsewhere in the room and a little seat under a window at the far end where you could look out at the sky and the sea. Jaemin grinned as he walked over, sitting down on the small bench and patting the spot beside him. Jeno came over happily, sitting down with a drawn-out sigh and hosting his prosthetic leg up for Jaemin to observe.
"Off." Jaemin said simply, tapping the metal and Jeno complied easily, unbuckling the leg from its place and handing the limp metal limb to the younger. Jaemin hummed as he looked it over. "You really haven't been taking very good care of this, have you?" He remarked. Jeno just sighed and leaned over into Jaemin.
"Never get the time." He explained. Jaemin nodded slowly at the excuse.
"You should make the time." He muttered lowly, using that baby voice that he liked to use when it was just the two of them. Jeno had to admit this was the most relaxed he had felt on this boat in a long time, even with the fact that his old boss would be after them anytime they sailed near Sanlow, and he felt better knowing that Jaemin was here beside him instead of stuck doing god knows what in the middle of the old town just trying to get by.
Jeno closed his eyes as he listened to the soothing hums from Jaemin, the rocking of the boat on the water being another thing familiar to him that brought him a sense of safety.
Maybe Aria would promise a newer, safer beginning for all of them- and maybe whoever this Ten guy was would end up being their ticket to that life.
As he listened to the clicks and squeaks of Jaemin working his prosthetic around, he began to drift off a bit- he couldn't wait to get to Aria and see what was waiting for them.
