" I haven't seen you since that night, brother, " the grey marbled tom spat the word like it was poison on his tongue, glowing green eyes flashing spitefully.

Storm peered at the red marbled tom who stood at his shoulder with quiet curiosity. Ibis appeared to be frozen in time, his own face conflicted with emotions and memories that Storm didn't have the right context to understand. He wasn't quite sure that he wanted to anyway.

But, it was glaringly obvious that the two massive toms were kin.

" Did you come here just to gloat? " Pip sorely asked, quickly hoping that Jax was alive and well. They would rescue him soon.

Storm cleared his throat and stood at attention, " Regardless. Basileus Xerxes, please move. We are occupied with a task of great importance. "

The fluffy spotted molly at Xerxes' side rolled her eyes and raised her tail aggressively, "Important enough to trespass on our territory with what is clearly a battle patrol? All of the gardens belong to the Empire. "

" The gardens have always been free territory, " Bruno hissed as his raised hackles, " We will not bow to your stupid rules! "

The tension in the air grew as the clouds overhead began to release their rainfall. The gardens plunged into darkness as lightning flashed rapidly.

Only glowing green and gold orbs were visible in the blackness.

Storm watched as Xerxes began to lean forward ever so slightly and felt his own muscles begin to tense as his mind raced with possible counters to an inevitable attack. They outnumbered Xerxes and his lackey by two to four. They wouldn't walk away unscathed, but he was sure they could win this.

There was hissing and threats thrown as the tension began to reach its boiling point like a height of a bird's orchestral song.

Then.

" Enough. "

The voice was raspy and clipped, like a clumsy imitation of catspeak. The figure slunked out from the darkness as a rancid, decaying scent formed in tangent with sweet blooms of the gardens.

The feline was monstrously tall with ragged grey-and-brown fur that dragged underneath him, a long muzzle, and beady, glowing red eyes that stared emptily at the scene in front of him.

But, the felidae were more concerned with what had followed him.

" Is that a...rat? " Arizona hesitantly growled.

It had to be as big as a dog with a scarred and filthy pelt and a long pink tail. It's milky pupil-less eyes slicked over everyone and left Storm feeling sick in its wake.

" Do not be foolish, " the stranger spoke, " This is no common rat. None of my thralls that you all slaughtered were. "

" Rat King, " Xerxes curtly greeted, " I see you failed as Ibis is still in front of me alive and breathing. "

" I serve no false king. You are a murderer, " The Rat King growled in his grating tone of voice.

" ...Is that so? Did Ibis tell you what really happened? Did he tell you how he watched helplessly as I tore Father apart? Did he tell you how he ran away? " Xerxes taunted, lip curling as he relived the memories, " I saved Father's alliance from turning weak. We were always meant for more. I was always meant for more. "

The monstrous rat at his side howled as if reacting to its master's pain and raised to it's taloned feet, preparing to fight.

" Trusting you was my only regret, Despot. Tonight, I finally remedy that regret."

Storm felt terror rush down his spine.

" I won't stop until I kill you. Then, I will cleanse this city. I won't let Thresk's death be in vain. "
