Where women do not belong

I could feel the elders fierce gaze pierce through me as I entered the hut. "My king you called for me?" I asked with my eyes lowered to my feet which shuffled awkwardly beneath me.

"My queen, come sit beside me." Makhosi beckoned me towards his throne. I had to bite my tongue and swallow my pride as I headed over and took my seat beside him. The elders scowled at me the faces etched with disdain. They didn't want me here.

"My king if I may," began one of the elders."A woman does not belong on the council, as beautiful as she is this does not reflects her smarts when it comes to ruling a tribe." He proclaimed earning a chorus of agreements.

I kept my head lowered as my nails sunk into hands causing beads of blood to seep from them. "She will continue to be present in all the meetings and will serve as my advisor." Makhosi's baritone voice boomed silencing the hut.

A small smile tugged at my lips as I realised what he had just done. As the kings advisor I had a say in the way he ruled the tribe. The elders although displeased were silent as Makhosi formally began the meeting.

"The Karanga tribe has sent a messenger they wish to be protected from the Tonga tribe as they recover." Hushed whisperes spread through the group of elders.

"My king we must use this chance to attack them whilst they're weak. They could be using it as a diversion to attack us when we least expect them to." Another elder spoke.

Makhosi turned towards me his hard eyes softned as he asked me, "What do you think?" A thick silence engulfed the hut as I felt pairs of eyes burn through me.

"The karanga tribe are known for their honesty and if they seek refuge they're tribe has fallen in numbers meaning they cannot cause a suprise attack. My king, it is better to make an alliance with them than to engage in a war." I explained emphasising the last statement. Most of the elders seemed to agree as they nodded their heads.

"Then we agree. We shall provide refuge for the Karanga tribe. Send a messenger to inform them of the arrangement." Makhosi instructed before he laced his hand in mine leading me out of the hut towards the kitchen.

The cool air kissed my skin as the stars twinkled above us. We slowly walked towards the kitchen which was brightly lit with a crackling fire.

"I requested that Azile cook our dinner tonight as we have things to discuss" he informed me as we took our plates.

"My wife I know that I'm not your favourite person and I'm hoping we can change that for the better." He said nervously whilst rubbing the back of his neck.

"You killed my father." I spat at him causing him to slightly flinch at my tone. I could feel the anger crawling beneath my skin. "You took away my father." I choked up as the tears began blurring my vision.

"Your father threatened to kill everyone in this village. Your father killed so many people who had families in this village. He killed my mother and yet you dont see me pinning his sins against you. Your father wasn't the innocent man you thought him to be." He defended himself, tears brimming in his own eyes.

Denial coursed through my veins as the clay plate shattered beneath me. 'My father would never harm a woman, would he?' My mind began to wander. "My father would never..."

"I begin to question if you truly knew your father. You call me a beast but atleast I do not hide behind the facade of a righteous man." He interupted his voice hoarse with anguish.

I rushed towards our hut as the tears streamed down my face. He had revealed a side of my father I could have never imagined and yet I couldn't help question myself. 'Did I really know my father?'
