PIP WAS ABSOLUTELY fed up with Poe's little tasks that always seemed to drag her along for the ride. Yet, this time was different. She had practically begged Leia to let her go with him, secretly relishing the thrill of adventure, even if it meant revisiting painful memories on Jakku. The village of Tuanul was as desolate and dull as she remembered, a place forever tainted in her mind by the loss of her parents.
They were there for one purpose: to retrieve a map leading to Luke Skywalker's location. Pip wasn't entirely sure if Luke was real, but she believed because everyone else did. Standing in a modest hut, she watched as Lor San Tekka, an elderly man with a weathered face, handed Poe the map.
"This will begin to make things right," Tekka said, his voice filled with quiet conviction. Pip couldn't help but roll her eyes, thinking Poe would probably misplace it like he did with everything else.
"I've traveled too far and seen too much to ignore the despair in the galaxy," Tekka continued, his tone grave. "Without the Jedi, there can be no balance in the Force."
Poe's eyes shone with a mix of hope and resolve, a look Pip secretly found reassuring. "Well, because of you, now we have a chance. The General's been after this for a long time."
Tekka nodded thoughtfully. "Oh, the General? To me, she is royalty."
Pip chuckled softly, finding Tekka's reverence for Leia both amusing and accurate. "Well, she certainly is that," Poe replied with a fond smile.
Suddenly, BB-8 rolled in, beeping urgently. Poe's expression shifted instantly to alertness as he deciphered the droid's message. "We got company," he said, a note of urgency creeping into his voice.
Poe grabbed Pip's arm, helping her up. She shot him a glare, annoyed at being treated like a child, but he ignored it, focusing instead on the task at hand. They stepped outside, where Poe scanned the horizon with his binoculars.
"You have to hide," Poe urged, his voice tense.
"You and your daughter need to leave," Tekka insisted, his eyes filled with concern. "Go."
Poe hesitated, a brief flicker of conflict crossing his face before he nodded, grabbing Pip's hand and pulling her along. Pip yanked her hand away in frustration. "Let me go, stupid! I can run on my own."
Poe didn't release her. "Yeah? Well, not fast enough. BB-8, hurry!"
He hoisted Pip onto the X-wing, her small frame making it an easy lift. After clambering up himself, he hastily placed a helmet on her head, then donned his own. As Pip adjusted her helmet, a deafening bang shook the ship. She looked at Poe, alarmed. "Poe! I think we're hit!"
"Really? I didn't notice," Poe muttered dryly, glancing at the rapidly approaching stormtroopers.
BB-8 whirred frantically, alerting them to the encroaching danger. "I see them!" Poe responded, activating the ship's defenses. The blaster cannons fired, but it was clear they were outnumbered.
Poe turned to Pip, his expression resolute. "Come on, we gotta get out of here!" He hopped off the X-wing, helping her down amid the chaos. The scene was a blur of blaster fire and panicked villagers. Pip felt a surge of helplessness as she took in the frantic scene.
"What can I do to help, Poe?" Pip asked, desperate to do something useful.
Poe's expression softened momentarily at her eagerness. "You can help by listening to me. I need you to go with BB-8—"
Pip's frown deepened. "Poe—"
"No, hey, this is where you listen to me," Poe said firmly, his tone brooking no argument. Pip's defiance melted into attentive silence. "You go with BB-8, keep him and this map safe because it's gonna be with him. I'll come back for you."
Pip glared at him, a mix of anger and worry in her eyes. Poe returned her look with a gentle smile, patting her cheek. He knelt beside BB-8, sliding the map into the droid's compartment. "It's safer with you than it is with me."
Poe stood, his gaze intense. "You get as far away from here as you can, do you hear me, kid?"
Pip reluctantly nodded. "Yeah... whatever..." she muttered, avoiding his eyes.
Poe cupped her face, gently forcing her to look at him. "I need to know that you hear me," he insisted.
Pip hated when he did that, but she couldn't ignore the worry in his voice. "Yeah, Poe, I hear you loud and clear."
He pressed a quick kiss to her forehead. "I'll come back for you." With that, he turned and sprinted toward the battle.
As Poe disappeared into the fray, Pip looked down at BB-8. "Come on, BB-8! Let's go!" She took off running, the droid rolling alongside her.
They sprinted through the village, dodging blaster fire and chaos. Pip's heart pounded in her chest, adrenaline fueling her every step. But as they rounded a corner, they skidded to a halt. A squad of stormtroopers blocked their path, blasters at the ready.
Pip's eyes widened in alarm. She quickly made a decision, lightly nudging BB-8 with her foot. "Go, BB-8, go!" she hissed. The droid hesitated for a fraction of a second, then took off, whirring loudly as it sped away.
The stormtroopers, noticing the droid's departure, moved to intercept, but Pip stepped forward, drawing their attention. "Hey, bucketheads!" she shouted, her voice fierce. "What's the matter? Scared of a little girl?"
One of the stormtroopers stepped forward, clearly irritated. "Shut up, kid."
Pip's eyes blazed with defiance. "Or what? You gonna shoot me? Real brave, picking on someone half your size!" Her taunts were laced with venom, her intent clear: keep their focus on her and away from BB-8.
The lead stormtrooper, visibly annoyed, raised his blaster. "I said, shut up!" he barked.
Pip smirked, crossing her arms defiantly. "Make me," she challenged, her voice steady despite the fear churning inside her.
The stormtrooper hesitated, then took a step forward, raising the butt of his blaster. "Enough of this," he growled.
Before Pip could react, the trooper swung the weapon, hitting her sharply across the temple. Pain exploded in her head, and she crumpled to the ground, consciousness slipping away. Then she was engulfed in darkness.
"I hate kids."
WHEN PIP WOKE UP, the world around her was a blur of pain and disorientation. She felt her feet dragging along the cold floor, her head throbbing with a sharp ache. Two stormtroopers gripped her arms, their helmets impassive as they hauled her down a dimly lit corridor. She tried to regain her senses, but the pounding in her skull made it hard to focus. She could only faintly hear the metallic clank of their boots echoing through the long hall.
Back in the interrogation room, Poe Dameron sat strapped to a chair, blood trickling from his split lip. He glared defiantly at Kylo Ren, who loomed over him with an intimidating presence. The dark warrior's voice was a low, resonant growl as he spoke. "We found a girl," Kylo Ren said, his masked face betraying no emotion. "She was seen with you."
Poe's heart skipped a beat, and his eyes widened with alarm. Pip. He tried to maintain a facade of indifference, but the tremor in his voice betrayed his concern. "I don't know what you're talking about," he lied, struggling to keep his voice steady.
Kylo Ren tilted his head, scrutinizing Poe. "Oh? So you do know her."
Before Poe could respond, the door to the room slid open, and the stormtroopers dragged Pip inside. She was barely conscious, her face pale and bruised, her limbs weak from the rough handling. Poe's breath hitched at the sight of her, his eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and anger. He fought against his restraints, desperate to reach her.
"Pip!" he called out, his voice cracking. "She doesn't know anything! Leave her out of this!"
Kylo Ren ignored Poe, focusing instead on the young girl. The stormtroopers roughly forced her to her knees in front of him. Pip's eyes fluttered open, and she looked up at the masked figure towering over her. Despite her pain, she mustered all her courage, her gaze unwavering.
Kylo Ren crouched down to her level, his black robes pooling around him. He tilted his head, studying her intently. "What is your name, girl?" he asked, his voice cold and commanding.
Pip met his gaze without flinching. Her voice was shaky but filled with defiance. "Why do you care?" she retorted, spitting out the words. "You know what? You're just a big coward, hiding behind that mask. I bet you can't even show your face."
Poe's heart swelled with a mixture of fear and pride. That's my girl, he thought, despite the terror of the situation. She was so brave, standing up to this monster even when she was scared out of her mind. But he also knew how dangerous Kylo Ren could be, and he feared for her safety.
Kylo Ren's posture stiffened at her words, a low growl emanating from behind his mask. His gloved hand shot out, and Pip's body jerked as if an invisible force gripped her. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock. The pressure around her chest tightened, and she struggled to breathe.
"Stop!" Poe shouted, his voice breaking with desperation. "Please, stop! She doesn't know anything! She's just a kid!"
Kylo Ren ignored Poe's pleas, focusing on Pip. The pain was evident in her eyes, but she bit her lip, refusing to cry out. Poe's heart ached as he watched her suffer, powerless to help. The sight of her in pain was almost too much to bear, yet he couldn't help but feel a fierce pride at her bravery. She was enduring this torment, refusing to give in, just like he would.
"Where is the map?" Kylo Ren demanded, his voice cold and emotionless. "Tell me, and this will end."
Pip's vision blurred as the pressure increased, spots dancing in front of her eyes. Her head throbbed, and it felt like her chest was being crushed. But even as her strength waned, she mustered the last of her defiance. "Go... to... hell," she managed to gasp out, her voice barely a whisper.
Kylo Ren's eyes flashed with fury behind his mask. For a moment, the pressure intensified, and Pip thought she might black out from the pain. But then, abruptly, the grip released leaving her gasping for air. Her whole body trembled with exhaustion and relief, her limbs too weak to move.
Kylo Ren stood up, looking down at her with disdain. He turned away, addressing the stormtroopers. "She knows nothing," he said dismissively. "Leave her here for now."
The stormtroopers roughly grabbed Pip, dragging her to a wall and leaning her against it. She was too weak to resist, her body limp and unresponsive. They didn't bother restraining her; it was clear she was in no condition to escape. Poe watched helplessly, tears stinging his eyes as he struggled against his restraints.
Kylo Ren spared one last glance at Pip, then turned and left the room, his black cloak billowing behind him. The stormtroopers followed, leaving Poe and Pip alone in the cold, sterile room. Poe's heart ached as he looked at her, slumped against the wall, her breaths shallow and labored.
Pain coursed through her body, and she had to lean heavily against the cold wall for support. Her breaths were shallow, each one a painful effort. As her vision cleared, she saw Poe watching her with a mixture of concern and helplessness. His eyes were red, his face etched with worry, but he managed a small, reassuring smile.
Tears welled up in Pip's eyes, a mix of frustration, fear, and guilt. Her voice was shaky as she spoke, struggling to hold back the sobs threatening to escape. "Poe... I'm so sorry," she choked out, her voice barely above a whisper. "I tried... I tried to get away, but... there were so many of them... I couldn't... BB-8 got away, but I... I couldn't..."
Poe's expression softened, and he shook his head gently. "Hey, hey, it's okay," he murmured, his voice soothing. He strained against his restraints, desperate to reach out to her. "You did great, Pip. You got BB-8 out of there, and that's what matters."
Pip shook her head, her eyes filled with tears. "No, I... I failed. I couldn't escape. I let them catch me..."
Poe leaned forward as far as his restraints would allow, his eyes locked on hers. "Pip, look at me," he said firmly. She hesitated, then met his gaze, her eyes wide and teary. "You were brave," he continued, his voice steady and full of conviction. "You stood up to them. You stood up to him." Poe couldn't help the slight smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Not many people would have the guts to do that."
Pip sniffled, trying to process his words. She felt the sting of failure, but there was something in Poe's eyes—something warm and proud—that made her pause. "But... I couldn't get away," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Poe shook his head again, his gaze unwavering. "You did everything you could. More than anyone could have expected," he said, his voice filled with admiration. "You're one brave kid, Pip."
Pip looked down, her face flushed with a mix of emotions. The praise felt strange, almost undeserved, but there was a comfort in Poe's words. He didn't blame her, didn't see her as a failure. Instead, he saw her strength, her bravery, even when she felt at her weakest.
Poe's eyes softened, and he continued, "You protected BB-8, and that's the most important thing. You did exactly what you were supposed to do."
A faint smile broke through Pip's tears, her lips trembling. She felt a small swell of pride at his words, even though the pain still lingered. "I just... I wanted to help," she murmured, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand.
Poe nodded, his expression gentle. "And you did," he assured her. "You did more than anyone could ask for. You're tough, Pip. You keep surprising me with how strong you are."
Pip looked up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. For a moment, she felt a flicker of warmth amidst the cold, sterile room. Poe's words wrapped around her like a comforting blanket, easing the tight knot of guilt and fear in her chest. She took a deep, shaky breath, trying to steady herself.
"Thanks, Poe," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'm sorry..."
Poe shook his head with a soft chuckle, his eyes glimmering with a mix of amusement and admiration. "You have nothing to apologize for," he said. "You're my brave, stubborn kid. And I'm proud of you."
Then a storm trooper came in, Poe presumed to watch over them.
"No talking." The storm trooper watching them said.
