Chapter Three: The Not-Quiet Game
"So, this is all real?" Theresa asked to make sure she was understanding the situation.
"Yes," Nick said, trying to analyze Theresa's expression. Was she okay? Was she going to go into shock?
"Then, I'm not really crazy?" she clarified.
"Yeah," Nick said.
Theresa leaned back in her chair and sighed.
"Are you okay?" Nick asked.
"I think so," she answered. "But, this is so weird."
"It definitely takes some getting used to," Nick said.
"And how long did it take you? To get used to it, I mean." Theresa asked.
"It's hard to explain," Nick said. "I've only been able to see these," Nick pointed to a picture of a Blutbad. "Wesen is what they're called, for almost four years. Some days everything makes sense and other days I wonder how I haven't gotten killed or lost my mind. I guess, what I'm trying to say is that it takes a while. I don't know that this ever really feels completely normal."
"You've only seen Wes- Wesen? Right?" Theresa asked. Nick nodded in affirmation, and Theresa finished her question. "Wesen for four years?"
"Uh-huh," Nick said.
"I've seen them for eight," Theresa said. "Is that normal?"
"Women usually find out before men," Nick said. "My mom was ten, I think, when she saw her first."
Trubel nodded. "So how does it all work? When can normal people see Wesen?"
"Wesen can only be seen by normal humans when the Wesen want to be seen. So typically when they are angry or trying to scare people or something like that. It's a choice they make."
"And, when we see them?" Theresa asked.
"We see them whenever they woge, not just when they want to be seen," Nick explained.
"What's a woge?" Theresa questioned.
"That's what it's called when they transform. They woge from one physical state to another. When they woge unintentionally from some emotional reaction, we can see them."
"And that's why they are afraid of me? Or us, I guess? Because we can see them?" Theresa asked.
"Let me show you something," Nick said. He and Theresa had been sitting at the desk with Grimm books spread out in front of them. Nick picked a book at random and started turning pages. "I cut off his head with a single swing of my sword," Nick read. "Had him drawn and quartered." Nick kept flipping through the pages. "Used my sharp blade to slice him open, exposing the contents of his stomach, set the entire house on fire with the monsters inside, cut off his head, cut off his head, cut off her head," Nick read, still flipping the pages of the single book. "Ooh," he cringed. "Cut off his hands and feet... before cutting off his head."
Nick looked up at Theresa. "That's why they are afraid of us. We've been slaughtering them for centuries."
Theresa, rather than looking disgusted or horrified like she should have, was making a face that betrayed deep though. "So..." she paused, trying to think of a way to frame the question. "Are we bad?" she finally asked.
"It's complicated," Nick said. "Our ancestors were sort of like guns for hire. Or swords for hire. Villages of people or specific individuals would hire Grimms to go after Wesen, usually after some crime was committed. For example, if people were going missing or dying under mysterious circumstances. Like this Wesen here," Nick said, pointing to the picture of the Mauvais Dentes. "Is known for killing entire villages in one night. Grimms would usually seek out these Wesen after an incident to prevent it from happening again. However, if they had run into a Wesen like this, even before a crime, they would probably kill first and ask questions later. That was and still is the traditional Grimm way. If Grimms see Wesen, especially ones that are decided to be dangerous like Blutbaden, Balam, Mauvais Dentes, the Grimms will typically just kill them."
Nick sighed to himself before continuing. "Grimms did this in the past to protect humans from Wesen violence, but also to make some money. They were like assassins/cops. The problem is that even 'dangerous' Wesen can be good. Our ancestors and many Grimms to this day make the mistake of assuming that Wesen are bad simply because they are Wesen. Even my mom doesn't really view Wesen as people, and that's very common. In fact, I've never even heard of another Grimm who befriends Wesen and treats them the same way as any other person. I try not to judge people by what they are because it's more important who they are."
Theresa nodded because Nick's ideas, in some ways, made sense to her.
Nick was going to say something, but his phone rang. It was Juliette.
"Hold on, I've got to take this," Nick said. He picked up his phone and tapped the screen.
"Juliette," Nick said.
"Hey, I just got home," she said. "Where are you?"
"I got stuck at work," Nick said. "The case I'm working on is a little different," he tried to explain.
"Is it Wesen related?" Juliette asked.
Nick and Theresa exchanged a look. "Yeah, sort of," Nick said. "Anyway, I'll be on my way home in a minute."
"Okay, see you soon," Juliette answered. "Love you."
"Love you, too," Nick said before hanging up the phone.
Theresa looked at Nick and couldn't help feeling like an idiot. He was going home to his girlfriend. Of course, he was leaving. Theresa now understood that she was going to have to leave with the information she had been given and try to make it work for her as she went back out on the streets. She felt disappointed but also frustrated for letting herself get so attached to this new world so quickly.
Nick looked at Theresa, and Theresa waited for the, "I'm leaving now. You should do the same. Good luck," speech.
"Here's the deal," Nick began.
Here it comes, Theresa thought.
"My girlfriend, Juliette is waiting for me at home," Nick continued.
Just get on with it, she thought.
"So you and I need to talk about a few things before I introduce you to her," Nick said.
"What?" Theresa asked. Introduce her to his girlfriend?
"Look," Nick said. "It will take some convincing, but I'm sure I can get Juliette to let you stay with us for a while. At least until you know what you need to."
"You're taking me to your house? But you don't even know me?" Theresa said.
Suddenly the trailer door opened.
Nick's hand immediately moved to his gun, but he relaxed when he saw it was just Hank.
"Sorry," Hank said. "I had no idea that many people got coffee this late at night." Hank set the tray down on the table with the books on it. He took a coffee out and handed it to Nick. Then, he removed another coffee and handed it to Theresa.
"I didn't know what you'd want, so I just got you the same thing Nick always gets," Hank said.
Theresa hesitated before taking the coffee from Hank. "Thanks," she said.
"So, are we getting everything figured out?" Hank asked.
"Sort of," Nick said. "I was just about to ask some questions before I take her to my house."
"Your house?" Hank asked incredulously.
Theresa felt assured that she wasn't the only person confused by Nick's behavior.
"Juliette is going to be mad," Hank said.
"She hasn't kicked me out yet," Nick said. "Anyway," Nick added, looking at Theresa. "If you're going to be staying with me, you need to understand that Wesen can be good or bad just like anyone else. It might be weird to adjust to that, but it's your responsibility, as a Grimm, to avoid making snap judgments. Like we talked about, Wesen are going to be scared of you. The best thing you can do is make it clear that you aren't the kind of Grimm they think you are."
"Got it," Theresa said.
"Just a few more things," Nick said. "No killing anyone unless you have absolutely no other choice. There are usually other options that don't involve murder, and you shouldn't be getting into that much trouble, anyway. So, basically, don't kill anyone."
This is so weird, Hank thought. Nick has to tell a 21-year-old girl not to murder anyone while she's staying with him.
"Don't steal," Nick said. "I know you needed to before, but you don't need to now, so if you want something, just ask."
"Okay," Theresa agreed.
"And I probably don't need to tell you this, but be nice to Juliette. She's the one that's deciding how long you're staying with us."
Theresa nodded.
"Okay, we're good to go," Nick said, looking at Hank.
"Right now?" Hank asked. "But I just got here."
"Juliette is waiting, and we need her to be in a good mood," Nick said.
"Let's go," Hank agreed.
They piled into the Charger and began driving to Nick's house.
Somewhere along the way, Hank asked, "Did you guys already talk about what actually happened?"
"You mean the case?" Nick asked. "No, we didn't really get to that. But maybe while we're all here..." Nick suggested, looking behind himself at Theresa.
"You want me to tell you about what I did?" Theresa asked uncomfortably.
"I think it's important to know what really happened," Nick said.
Theresa thought about where to start.
"Okay," she sighed. "I was walking down the road, and it was probably like 3:00 in the morning."
"What were you doing there at that time of night?" Nick asked.
"I don't know, just walking. I didn't really have anywhere to go or anything to do. Maybe I was just looking for a place to crash or for something," Theresa tried to explain. "I didn't really have a goal in mind if that's what you're wondering. I just go from place to place." She decided to continue her story. "While I was walking, I saw headlights behind me, so I moved to the side of the road and waited for the truck to pass."
"2004 Chevy Silverado Pickup?" Hank asked.
"I don't know. It was a truck," Theresa said, sounding a little snappy. She had a tendency to be a little too blunt and Nick worried how that would go over with Juliette.
"But it didn't go far," Theresa said. "It pulled over and stopped in front of me. I kept walking past it and tried to ignore the guys that were offering me a ride or something. It all happened really fast. They grabbed me and dragged me off the road. They threw me on the ground and I saw their faces change. One was a cat and one was a snake. Anyway, I had a knife and stabbed them a bunch of times."
"Then what?" Nick asked.
"I took their wallets and their truck and grabbed something to eat at a fast food place-"
"Wait, wait, wait," Hank said quickly. "You stabbed two people to death and went to get food."
That was odd to hear. She murdered two people who attacked her and then casually left to grab a bite to eat.
"Yeah?" Theresa said. She didn't get what was so hard to understand. "I was hungry."
"After killing two people? That made you hungry?" Hank asked.
"No," Theresa said. "I'm always hungry, but they had the cash I needed to buy something."
"Okay," Hank said, giving up trying to explain that being hungry after killing someone was odd behavior.
"Then what?" Nick asked. He was weirded out like Hank but couldn't help thinking that, though her point of view was strange, it was still self-defense.
"Then I dumped the truck and used the money I stole to get a room at the hotel you found me at."
"But you killed someone else before we picked you up," Hank said.
"Yeah, that girl in the park," Theresa admitted.
"What happened?" Nick asked.
"I stole a pair of boots from the store and she followed me and told me to give them to her," Theresa said. "I couldn't just give them to her. I only stole the boots in the first place because my other shoes had giant holes in them. I told her to leave me alone and I pulled out a knife, but she still attacked me anyway. She was some kind of lizard person."
"So, in all cases, it was self-defense," Nick pointed out.
"Yeah," Theresa said. "I didn't want to kill anyone. I tried to walk away from them, and they all came after me anyway." Theresa sounded like she was frustrated, but also sad.
"Okay, well it's good to finally know what happened," Nick said. He paused before saying, " You shouldn't have to deal with this stuff, especially at your age. It's not your fault."
He figured Theresa must be having a rough time with everything even though she was acting like she was fine. He didn't really know what to say to help her.
Theresa didn't say anything. She just looked out the window and tried to pretend that she was okay.
"At least you know the truth," Hank added. Moments later, the Charger pulled up to the curb in front of Nick's house.
"Here goes nothing," Nick said. He got out of the car and walked around to the trunk where Hank had put Theresa's backpack. After they had gone through her stuff they replaced everything that wasn't a weapon.
Nick handed Theresa her things, and they started walking up to the house together with Nick leading the way.
"Good luck," Hank yelled after them just before he drove off into the night.
Nick and Theresa walked up the steps.
Nick shot a nervous, yet excited, look at Theresa before opening the door. He walked inside and heard Juliette yell, "Nick?" from the kitchen.
"Yeah," he answered while Theresa followed behind him.
"Hey, I'm glad you're here. I picked up Chinese for us," Juliette responded.
"Well, I hope you picked up a lot," Nick said. He figured Theresa must be hungry. Especially if the last thing she ate was the fast food that she ordered the night before.
Juliette was confused by Nick's answer and walked out of the kitchen, still holding the spoon that was in her hand.
"Juliette, this is Theresa Rubel," Nick introduced.
"Hi," Juliette greeted kindly. "So Theresa's staying for dinner?" she clarified.
"Nobody calls me Theresa," Theresa interrupted.
"Uh-huh," Juliette said apprehensively. "So what do they call you?"
"They call me Trubel," Trubel replied, sounding more intimidating than Nick would have liked.
He made an uncomfortable face. This is already not going well.
