Part 7

I stop and take a few steps backwards to see Charles stop leaning on the post and stand up tall. It looked as though he had been waiting for me for a while. I then replied with, "I'm not in the mood to talk about it."

"Did you forget to avoid the hole?"

"I said, I don't want to talk about it."

"Come on, it can't be that bad that he found you."

"Yes, it could be. I don't want to marry him."

"So why did you say yes?"

"I don't know, he didn't even ask me."

"Wait, what?!"

"Well he was holding a ring and on one knee, so I figured that he was just going to ask me to marry him, and I just said yes."

"You could have waited for him to actually ask and then said no."

"Even if I did wait, it isn't like I had a choice. I am betrothed to him. He didn't even have to ask me to marry him," I said and then realized and said with a sigh, "And I didn't have to say yes."

"You really didn't," Charles replied with a smile on his face.

"So why didn't you inform me of this? The whole issue could have been solved before it even began."

"I wanted to see you in distress."

"Really, Charles, I thought you were my friend, who wanted to help me!" I say as I try to walk away. Charles grabs my arm and says, "Wait."

"Why would I? You knew I didn't want to marry him, you knew I could have said no, but chose not to tell me. You knew I was going to run and told Edward to dig a hole. You probably even knew he was going to follow me, that's why you were waiting for me. I wouldn't have to deal with this mess if it wasn't for you!"

"Okay, I'm sorry. Just come with me."

"No," I say as I try to walk away, but his grip on my arm is so tight as he pulls me away, forcing me to go with him. As we walked I didn't talk, I was too angry. So he was the only one talking while I tried to free my arm. The more I resisted, the tighter his grip became. We stopped and he said, "Okay, we're here."

"Can you let go of my arm then?"

"Do you promise not to run?"

"I don't have to promise you anything."

"True, you don't, even though I'm still higher in rank than you. You may be engaged to the king, but you aren't queen yet."

"If you would have been a good friend, I wouldn't even be engaged. So let go of my arm Charles!"

''So from a different perspective, I was a good friend by helping you move up in class."

He can see from my face that by now I've gotten really annoyed and started to laugh.

"It's not funny, Charles, I'm serious."

"I know, but it's just the fact that this has happened before with the two of us here that makes this funny."

I was so mad at him, I didn't even realize where we were. The place is a beautiful river with luscious plants surrounding it. The water is almost clear as glass. The best part is that it's hidden from everyone else. Charles and I found it when we were wandering the castle grounds, when I was visiting for the first time. The last time I came here was two or three years ago, but nothing has really changed. Except for a swing being added to my favorite tree. I turn back to Charles and say, "Such a sweet gesture adding the swing. Unfortunately it could potentially kill my favorite tree."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know."

"Don't worry about it. So why did you bring me here?"

"Do you notice anything else different about this place?"

"What?"

"Look around."

I start looking around and then suddenly see something shining in a tree across the river. I carefully made my way across the river and went to see what it was. When I got there, I saw that it was a ring. I turned back to look at Charles who shouted, "what do you say? I know you're engaged, but will you marry me?"

"Yes," I say and then cross the river back to him. When I get to him, I hug him so tight and he lifts up and spins me around. I say, "We should probably head back to the castle now. we wouldn't want to be caught. How am I supposed to hide the ring?"

"Oh, right, I almost forgot, here use this," he says handing me a chain to put the ring on.I put the ring on the chain and put the chain around my neck and hide it in my dress. He grabs my hand and we start to walk back.

"Charles, how am I supposed to get out of the engagement with Edward without hurting him?"

"Just tell him when you next see him. He would much rather have you tell him instead of stringing him along."

"Okay, as long as it doesn't hurt him, I will," I say just as we get back and Charles drops my hand. We say goodbye and then go our separate ways.
