Count the Deceased
(DUSK POV)
"Nadwe?"
I stood behind Nadwe, who was turned away from me. His arms were crossed, and he refused to utter a word to me.
"Nadwe, I'm sorry-"
"You're sorry?" Nadwe said, "A bit too late for that. You've been lying to me. You've killed people. You're a demon for crying out loud!"
"If I told you-" I started to say, but Nadwe held his hand up.
"What? If you told me your cover would be blown? You wouldn't be able to walk among us as human and kill us off one by one?" Nadwe sighed, "Muffin- or, should I say, Dusk- you and I can never be friends. I'm sorry if that disappoints you, but I don't care. Leave me alone."
And at that he trudged off, leaving me and my broken heart behind.
No. Not Nadwe. He's been my best friend ever since I came. Sure, he had thought I was his friend, Muffin, but it really felt like we were friends.
How could that end this way?
I leaned against the siding of Meme's house and looked up depressingly. What a crappy day. At least Socks didn't kick me out as soon as he found out who I was.
"Dusk? You okay?"
I turned to see Meme walking towards me. I turned away.
Leave me alone, I told him telepathically.
Meme sat down beside me. "Dusk, we're on the same side here. Tell me what's wrong."
I wrapped my wings around me, blocking my face from Meme's view. After about fifteen minutes of Meme trying to get me to talk, he just gave up and left. I sighed in relief.
I stood up and flew to the roof, sitting down up there. Not even the warm sunshine brightened my mood. And usually it does.
I laid down and looked up at the blue sky. No clouds penetrated the blue void above me. Sometimes I wished Xero were a bit closer so that I could actually see it. When Vizor and I left, I was only about five. I don't remember my home planet all that much, and wish I did. Vizor refused to talk about it, too, making it even more frustrating.
Wait a minute. I could ask Socks now.
I sat up and glided down to the ground. When I didn't see Socks anywhere, I flew back up to look around. That's when I saw him. He was standing with Dino on the dirt path connecting Meme's house with the rest of the small collection of houses in the clearing. I glided down and landed nearby, startling Dino.
"Dusk? You scared me!" Dino said. Socks patted his shoulder.
"You get used to it when it happens all the time," Socks said, chuckling, "What do you need, Dusk?"
"I..." I sighed, "I want you to tell me about Xero."
"Are you not... From Xero?" He questioned, "I mean, there are other planets, of course, like Sahyron, Firos, Etherioum, Deoxyribon..."
"No, I'm from Xero," I said, "But... When I left, I was too young to remember."
"Oh," Socks said, a flicker of remorse in his eyes, "I know how that feels."
"You do?" I questioned.
"That's a long story," Socks said.
"Ah, got it," I said.
"Anyway," Socks continued, "I'll tell you about Xero."
"Mind if I listen?" Dino asked, "I'm curious to know what life is like on another planet."
"Sure," Socks said.
Dino steppes forward a little bit, intrigued as to what Socks had to say.
"Anyway," Socks continued, "Imaging these trees around you. Now imaging them about fifty feet higher, with light gray bark and sea greenish-blue leaves. And a lot more lush. On the ground, the grass is the same as the leaves, but more blue. There are some bushes sometimes, with glow berries of various colors. In the sky are five moons - Quoian, Wronix, Bernial, Nedorous, and Keinus.
"As for cities and civilization, there are many. But for now we'll stick with the main capital of the Angel's land, Solaris. In the middle is a tall, sleek cone-shaped tower, shining white and gold in the light of the moon Wronix. Around it are smaller, yet grand buildings, shining with the same beauty and luster."
He stopped for a moment and stared off into space. He's probably thinking about Xero. I'd bet he misses it as much as I wish I did.
"But, behind the beauty is the war. The Hybrid Civil War. Everyone is so divided... I hardly remember a time when we were all united," Socks sighed sadly.
I walked up and wrapped my wing around him. He looked down and smiled softly.
"Augh!" He said suddenly. His held his hand up to his forehead as if in pain.
"You okay?" Dino asked.
"I'm... Fine," Socks said, but another sharp cringe told otherwise.
"Socks, is something wrong?"
"All good!" He said, but cringed again.
"Dusk, maybe you should go get Meme!" Dino said. I nodded, and flew away towards Meme's house.
----------
(DINO POV)
I stood beside Socks as he tried to hold back his pain. What was happening? I'm no doctor, but I know this probably isn't normal. Even for an alien species, most likely.
Socks collapsed to his knees, still holding his forehead. I knelt down beside him quickly. His tentacles came out again, scaring the crap outta me.
Suddenly, Socks remained still. He was still on his knees, he hadn't collapsed further, but he had frozen up for some reason.
That's when I noticed his wing.
His feathery, angelic wing was now encased in shadow. I stood up and stepped back a bit.
"Socks...?"
Socks slowly stood up. His tentacles seemed to twitch with excitement. He looked up at me, and I gasped.
His right eye, usually a pale yellow with a darker yellow X, was now black. The X was glowing red. It looked similar to the left eye, except, of course, the pupil.
"Miss me?"
Suddenly, Sock's tentacle shot forward and wrapped around my neck. I felt myself being lifted off of the ground. "Socks... What are you..."
I stopped abruptly when Socks tightened his grip on my neck. "You really think Socks is in his right mind at the moment?" He said. I noticed his voice sounded more demonic than it should.
"V-Vizor?"
Socks smiled. "You catch on quick, lizard. Yes, it's me."
"How-" I started, but was cut off once again.
"Fool," he said, "You really think I would just disappear without a trace? You humans. So naive. Don't even know what's going on within your midst."
Socks/Vizor walked closer to me.
"No matter," he said, "You won't be a problem anymore."
I felt one last squeeze around my neck before everything went black. A few seconds later, I found myself floating over my body. Socks was looking down in shock, his eyes and wing back to normal. I saw him fall to his knees and just stare in horror at what he had done. Poor guy. It wasn't his fault.
"You too?"
I turned to see a bright red ghost standing behind me.
"Tbh?"
"Yup," Tbh said, "Been here the whole time. Ally, too. Ally, get over here!"
Suddenly, a pastel pink ghost appeared. On her forehead was a hole, glowing red. Probably the wound that killed her.
"Dino? You died?" Ally said.
"Unfortunately, yes," I said.
---------------
(SOCKS POV)
I sat there, staring at the body of my former friend.
I did it again. I've killed two of my friends, and its barely been a week since I'd arrived here on Earth.
I heard foot steps behind me. I turned to see Dusk with Blaza, Meme, and Nadwe behind him.
The only people in the group left alive.
Blaza immediately stepped forward and crouched down beside me, wrapping his arm around me as he tried to comfort me.
"Socks, it wasn't your fault..."
I buried my face in my knees. "It feels like it is," I whispered, on the verge of tears.
"Hey, hey, don't cry," Blaza said. He sat down next to me and looked at me. I wrapped my wings around myself to get my own space.
I couldn't stand this any longer.
Is everyone's suffering because I came?
