07. theater kill box

chapter seven,
theater kill box

THE GROUP HAD decided to take Bailey's advice of staying in public. They were headed to the nearest subway station. It was Halloween, so the subway would be even more full than it normally was.

"Is this even a good plan?" Ethan questioned, the only one of the group to voice his doubts.

Tara glanced back at him. "You don't have to come if you don't want to."

"So we just peel off and the killer picks us off one-by-one? No, thank you," the curly-haired boy shook his head and Tara let out a quiet huff.

Carlyn grabbed his hand and paused. "I don't want you to come."

The plan was easier said than done. Trapping Ghostface and killing him would not happen without any damage. Carlyn had sucked at helping the people she cared about, and she was not adding another name to her list. Maybe Ethan was the killer, but if he wasn't, she wasn't gonna let him die. Not when she could to something to save him.

        "What?"

"I don't want you to come," Carlyn repeated.

Even though Ethan had made it clear that he was against the plan, his eyes softened. "Carlyn—"

A lump formed in her throat and tears began to pool in her eyes. "Ethan—"

"The only way I'm not going is if you don't go."

"I don't want anything to happen to you, and if you come and something does, that's gonna be on me," her voice held a mixture of annoyance and desperation. "I don't want you to come."

"If you don't want me to come, then you're not going either," Ethan argued, laying his hands on her shoulders. He leaned down so he was at her height. "And I know you're not going to stay behind, so I'm going."

Carlyn would've argued back, but Chad's voice stopped her before she could. "Guys, come on!" he called out to them as the group stood before the entrance to the subway station.

"Fine," Carlyn sighed. "But stay close, okay? I'm not letting anything happen to you."

She took his hand and led him over to the subway entrance where the others were waiting. Mindy eyed Ethan and Tara rolled her eyes as the group headed down the stairs.

Chad grabbed Carlyn's hand, making sure he kept her close as they pushed through the crowded station. A person bumped into her, making her let go of Ethan's hand. She turned back, catching him at the end of the stairs with Mindy. "Wait—" The loud chatter surrounding them made it so the others couldn't hear her and Chad continued dragging her into the subway. "Chad—"

The boy finally turned around and followed her gaze, noticing his sister wasn't with them. "Mindy—"

Before either of them could go back to get the two that had fallen behind, Danny was pulling them back.

"No," Carlyn breathed out as the subway took off. She groaned as she felt herself get pushed back. Anger flared through her body — they were supposed to stick together, yet two of their friends were left behind.

        "Where's Mindy?" Sam wondered.

"She missed the train," Chad answered. "Car and I were gonna wait for her but Cute Boy here dragged us on."

"I was trying to keep us together," Danny defended himself, looking at Chad incredulously.

"By pulling us apart?" Tara blinked at him.

"It's fine," Chad announced, looking down at his phone. "She's with Ethan. She'll meet us there."

Carlyn crossed her arms and turned, moving closer to Tara while keeping a watchful eye out. She was still annoyed with Sam's boyfriend, if it weren't for him they'd all be together. Deep down, she knew that they were all completely exhausted. None of them had slept for almost 48 hours.

She took in everyone's Halloween costumes. Before Sam had mentioned it, she'd completely forgotten that it was Halloween. Her stomach churned at the sight of how many people were wearing Ghostface costumes. It was completely different than it had been at the party because Ghostface was back, and there was a possibility that it could be any of these fuckers.

"Oh, shit," Chad mumbled, having made the same realization that Carlyn did.

Sam and Tara both moved to see what he was talking about. Carlyn could practically see the panic fill their veins as they took in how many Ghostface possibilities there were.

"How many stops do we have?" Tara asked.

Sam leaned over so she could get a better view of the transit map. Her shoulders slumped as she turned back to her sister. "10."

Carlyn swallowed, wishing she had her knife with her. She didn't even have her taser. It was bad enough being on the subway before, but now a psycho was after her and her friends.

She pulled her phone out and sent Ethan a text asking if he and Mindy were on the next train and waited for him to answer. She'd figure with everything going on, he'd answer quickly, but she was left staring at a blank screen.

Carlyn was more than happy to get off of the subway when they finally made it to their stop. They'd had too many scares. She held onto the sleeve of Chad's hoodie as they walked and shivered slightly at the October temperature.

"Hey!" Kirby called out when she saw them. "I talked to Bailey. I've got everything set up. Where are Mindy and Ethan?"

"They're five minutes behind us," Tara told her.

Kirby nodded. "Let's get you all inside."

"Not you," Sam suddenly turned around to face Danny.

"What?" the man looked taken aback.

"Don't trust anyone, remember?" Sam uttered. "We don't know you. Not really."

Danny's eyes flickered back to the three young adults before he returned his gaze to his girlfriend. "You know me."

"You're not Woodsboro!" Sam affirmed. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay," Danny assured her, and Carlyn really hoped that he wasn't Ghostface. Sam deserved someone like him. "It's okay, I get it. I get it." He took Sam's hands in his and stepped closer to her. "Be safe, okay?" He kissed her cheek. "Okay?"

"You, too," Sam whispered before turning around and walking away.

Kirby led them to the theater and opened the entrance with the keycard. "I cleared the whole place before you got here." The FBI agent slammed the metal door behind them. "So, this is the only way in or out. He steps in through the first door, both doors lock automatically, trapping him inside. We turn it into a kill box."

        "Weapons?" Sam asked.

"One gun, and I hold onto it," Kirby replied, earning looks from the others. "I am the only one with a badge here and that's the way it's gonna be. We're safe here."

        Carlyn really missed her knife.

"I'm gonna check in with Mindy," Sam voiced. "See if they're close."

Carlyn followed Chad and Tara into the other room, but left them alone once they started flirting. Anxiety bubbled in her stomach as she thought of every way this could go wrong. And it going wrong was very likely.

She walked into the shrine room and saw Sam trying to pull the metal door open. Carlyn furrowed her brows and ran over to her. "Sam? What's wrong?"

The lights turned off and Sam grabbed Carlyn's wrist, tugging her closer to her as a projector turned on on the screen in front of them.

"Where are Tara and Chad?" Sam demanded, looking over at Carlyn.

"The other room," the Windsor girl answered, voice laced with panic as she motioned towards the door.

Sam nodded and rushed over to the door, dragging Carlyn with her. As she was about to open the door, it burst open. Carlyn flinched and stepped away before quickly realizing it was just Chad and Tara.

Sam let go of Carlyn to grab her sister. "Come on!" Chad slammed the door behind them. "It's Kirby!" Sam announced.

Chad moved to the cage. "No, shit!"

"That's locked!" Sam informed him, making him let out a sigh and turn around so they could try to find another way to leave. "She made this whole theater a kill box. For us."

"Hey, what about that?" Tara pointed to a door on the second floor. "There's an exit door. Maybe it leads to the roof or something?"

"There's only one way to find out," Chad grabbed Carlyn's hand and pulled her forward. "Let's go."

"Bailey's on the way, but—" Sam was cut off by Ghostface jumping toward them. He swung his knife at Tara, knocking her to the ground before lunging at Sam, who ducked.

Ghostface swept his knife towards Carlyn. She moved back just in time, and fell back on the ground when Ghostface made a move on Chad.

Carlyn scrambled up as Chad tackled Ghostface. Sam and Carlyn rushed over to Tara while Chad picked up a camera. "Smile for the camera, motherfucker," the boy spat, slamming it into Ghostface's face.

The sisters rushed onto the stage while Carlyn waited the extra few seconds for her best friend, who was carrying the camera with him. She pushed him forward, glancing back to make sure Ghostface was still on the ground before following.

"This way," Tara ran towards a door and led them through a hallway.

Ghostface was hot on their trail. "Get fucked!" Chad chucked the camera at the killer. Carlyn groaned when she realized they'd gone in a circle and made it back to the concessions room.

Chad pushed the popcorn maker to the ground, but that didn't stall Ghostface. The masked person pinned Chad against the wall. Sam and Tara went to pull him off and stumbled back into the counter. Ghostface threw Tara off of him. Carlyn grabbed the metal napkin dispenser and smacked Ghostface on the head, knocking him onto the ground.

When Ghostface went to get back up, Tara kicked him in the face. Chad grabbed a gumball machine off of the counter. "Go!" he shouted. He stood over Ghostface and prepared to drop it on the killer's head while the girls went to leave the room.

At the sound of Chad's screams, Carlyn whipped around and saw another Ghostface stabbing him. Carlyn's eyes widened and she made went to run back, but Sam snatched her wrist and held onto Tara's waist while she screamed.

Carlyn fought against the girl as she watched both killers repeatedly stab Chad. Sam's grip only tightened despite her attempts. "Let go of me," Carlyn harshly demanded as tears began to roll down her cheeks.

This couldn't happen. Not again. She couldn't just stand there and watch, not like she'd done with Wes. She could actually do something here.

"Run," Chad choked out. "Go."

Carlyn watched as the light faded out of his eyes and the killers let go off him, letting his body fall back before they turned towards the girls.

Sam turned them around, switching Carlyn's wrist into her other hand that was around Tara before pulling open the door with her free hand. She let go of them when they were back out of the room.

Sam led them towards the stage again. One of the Ghostface stepped out from behind the sheet and when they went to turn back, the other way also stepped out.

They were trapped.

Carlyn looked around for anything they could use to fight back with. Sam handed her and Tara bricks before turning so their backs were pressed against each other. "Ready? I need you two to be ready! Ready?"

"Ready," Carlyn narrowed her eyes at the Ghostface in front of her. She was ready. She was going to kill whoever it was for taking her best friend from her.

Tara squeezed her eyes shut before she nodded. "I'm ready."

Gunshots went off, scaring away the killers. The girls turned around to see Kirby. Sam moved in front of the younger girls as the ex-FBI agent made her way down the stairs. "Stay the fuck back!"

"We know it's you, Kirby!" Tara added.

"One of them knocked me out," Kirby argued.

"Kirby, stop!" a new voice interjected. The girls all turned around as Detective Bailey came further into the room. "Get away from the girls!"

Kirby raised her gun at him. "What are you doing?"

"Did you kill Quinn?" Bailey asked, pointing his own gun at her. "Did you kill my daughter?"

"Jesus Christ!" Kirby looked at them. "Whatever he's been saying to you, don't listen to him. He's probably the killer." Her eyes then went wide. "Behind you!"

Detective Bailey fired his gun. Carlyn sucked in a horrified gasp as she watched the blonde woman fall to the ground before turning back to the man. Bailey lowered his gun as one of the Ghostfaces stopped beside him. "Great job." The second Ghostface then joined his side. "Both of you."

"You?" Tara breathed out.

"Yeah, of course me," Bailey confirmed. "Frankly, I expected more from the three of you after what you did to us."

"Us?" Carlyn furrowed her brows.

The second Ghostface lowered his hood and pulled his mask off. Carlyn's face fell and her breath hitched in her throat as she watched, heart shattering into a million more pieces.

There was a smile on his face, but not the one she'd grown to adore. And his brown eyes no longer held the sweetness, but instead were narrowed and directed right at her.
