Ommetaphobia: Excerpt #1

Excerpt #1: Taken from the end of Chapter 1

"Rest up. You'll be out of here in no time. That robber hasn't got a leg to stand on. You can't imprison someone over a black eye, when you instigated the fight in the first place."

I sat back down on my bed, as the three exchanged goodbyes. The cell door was shut again with an air of finality and Leo practically collapsed back onto his bed. His head fell into his hands and he exhaled heavily. I laid back down and nestled my head into the pillows, watching the stars begin to come out, through our tiny cell window. I wasn't sure why Leo was so wound up, he'd be fine, especially with a friend in the police force. The last dregs of daylight bled from the room and I knew we'd be served dinner in an hour or so.

Much later, when the moon was rising into the sky and my eyelids were beginning to droop, I realised Leo had gone very still. I figured he was asleep, but couldn't shake the feeling that the air in the room felt too heavy. It felt like I was being watched. I turned my head to look over at him and felt a jolt go through me when I saw him looking back. Only...something didn't seem right about his face. He wasn't blinking, just staring at me.

"Leo?" I whispered.

No response. I turned away and tried to shake off my unease, telling myself my cellmate just happened to sleep with his eyes open. I eventually began to drift off myself, but my last waking thought was that his breathing seemed too fast for him to be in a state of sleep.

But, if he wasn't asleep...then why was he staring at me like that?
