Chapter 2

After digging up the unfinished bone, I circled around the area a few times before laying down and set to work on carving the moose's story. My back teeth made deep and smooth lines showing her life to her death, to her journey to the Cave of Souls(1). Gripping the bone gently in my mouth, so that my teeth will not make a mistake in the carving.
I ran from the Salt Lakes, passing McNab territory into shadow forest. There I found a meadow full of tall, green grass. Caribou and moose will migrate here soon. Looking around I found the perfect spot to bury the bone. A shady spot under a large pine tree. Large ferns providing excellent cover for the calves to hide. I dug and buried the bone there. Stretching my limbs, I ran back towards McAngus territory. I got back in time to watch them bring down a red deer. Seeing the outflankers run down a sick member of the herd made me itch to run as well. But holding it in, I watched them. The outflankers stepped back to allow the huge males of the packs. The males take turns biting the old red deer. My eyes widen in surprise as the old female raised up on her hind legs and struck at one of the wolves with her sharp hooves.
I stayed silent as did everyone else. So that they paid their respect to the dying animal. A Lord from the McAngus Clan never pealed his eyes away from hers as the light died away in her eyes. Once she was dead, the higher ranking wolves tore into the carcass. The lower ranking wolves stayed back, one of them being me.
Sneezing quietly, I walked away from the two Clans. I will hunt on my own.
If I wait for them to finish, nothing will be left. I take in the new scents brought in by a breeze. One of them belonging to a hare. Running towards the scent, I find myself staring ahead at a clearing, separating the hares from my jaws was a large frozen river. Crouching down low, I stalked towards the rabbits. Drool coming from my mouth in waves. Stopping just for a second to check my surroundings. It is spring and the river has yet to thaw. Whining softly I placed a paw on the ice, testing to see it will hold my weight. Seeing that the ice will hold my paw. I cautiously placed another paw on the, ears scanning for slightest creak in the ice. Step after step, standing right in the middle of the ice trap. I froze hearing the ice groan under my weight. Panic filled my marrow as the ice began to crack and falling into the frigid waters. Fighting to stay up, I swam back up. Instead of breaking through the ice trap as I had hoped, my body rammed into thick, solid ice. My lungs began to burn from the lack of oxygen. Darkness began to appear in my vision as I sank deeper to the bottom of the river. Shivering I thought of where I was going in the afterlife, after I lost consciousness.
'Am I going to the Cave of Souls or... to the Dim World(2). Since I'm only half wolf, will the Star Ladder collapse on me as I climb up.'

Cave of Soul's-A name for the wolf heaven.
