Part 5: Letting Go
Present Time
You don't really know what you have until you lose it. And you don't really know what you lose until you find it. And you don't really know what you're looking for until it's discovered.
I scanned through the room, looking at each developed picture that I hung up on the clips. With a ball of string, I managed to transform my room into a room filled with memories and candids of pictures. All the pictures were clipped to the string, and managed to hang and stay put.
My eyes laid upon a special picture, I walked towards it and yanked it off of its clip. My finger grazed the figure that was captured in the moment.
She was sleeping with her head lazily laid on top of the dining table. Her arms were securing her head to keep her comfort on the wooden table. There was icing on the tip of her nose, and a single red velvet cupcake sitting right beside her.
"You look beautiful when you sleep.." I whispered to myself.
She did look beautiful when she was in her own slumber. I felt calm and relaxed whenever I see her fast asleep. It was her eyelids that made her whole face look innocent. Her eyelashes were as long as ever, all curled beautifully. My eyes trailed down to her lips, formed in a pout. Her lips were kissable that sometimes you would crave them whenever you missed them.
I turned the photo around to look at the written date. I frowned.
10 months.
I sighed, placing the picture back onto it's clip.
"I wish I knew that I was in love with you this whole time. But I guess I was just blind.. and so stupid."
Past - A year ago... (10 months into the fake relationship)
(Narrator's POV)
It was a peaceful afternoon, and the two fake lovebirds were settled in Jungkook's house. Seoyeon rummaged through his cupboards, searching for some ingredients that were needed for this new recipe that she wanted to try out.
Funny how Jungkook trusted her with his own kitchen.
"Are you sure you won't burn down my house?" He asked as Seoyeon turned around from the cupboard, giving him a reassuring smile.
"I won't burn your house down, trust me." She smiled, only to grin right after. "Unless, if I still hated you to death then I probably would."
He chuckled, shrugging his shoulders. "I guess I'm lucky."
"Nah, you're just my best friend." She cheekily smiled and he found himself smiling as well.
Jungkook took a seat around his dining table, staring at her as she struggled to find some flour and cupcake holders. He smiled at amusement, and it was almost as if he found himself stuck in the moment.
Her figure was tiny, and his figure definitely hovered over hers most of the time. She was different, she wasn't like any of those girls that he was friends with. They all would manage to make him feel like he was being used. But Seoyeon made him feel like he could be himself for once.. just like Haeun.
"Jungkook!" He snapped out of his trance and he looked at Seoyeon who had her hands placed around her hips. "Were you listening to me? I'm trying to find some baking gloves, do you know where they are?"
"Ah, I got it." He smiled nervously, walking over towards her and going onto his tiptoes to reach the baking gloves that were hidden at the back of the top shelf.
She looked at him, her heart starting to beat as fast as it could just by how close he was to her. She could hear his own heartbeat, his chest pressing against her ear. Seoyeon bit her lip to stop herself from blushing like a tomato.
He handed her the gloves and she quickly turned her face away from him because she was definitely starting to heat up.
"Do you remember that time where we used to chase each other around the house when we were little?" Jungkook suddenly asked and Seoyeon nodded her head.
"You were incredibly fast, I should say." She chuckled, pouring her ingredients into the bowl.
He walked over towards her, his arm second-mindedly wrapping around her waist. She felt herself stiffen at his touch, continuing her own work. "What are you making?"
"Red velvet cupcakes, my specialty." She smiled, and he looked at her, finding the moment stop yet again. "Do you like red velvet cupcakes?"
She looked at Jungkook, who was staring right into her eyes. She felt herself blush even harder. He didn't answer her, he was almost as if he was in a trance. He was getting lost in her eyes and she couldn't help but get lost in his as well.
She cleared her throat, "I asked you a question, Jungkook."
"Y-Yes?" He replied in almost like a question and she burst out into laughter. "W-What?"
"I asked you if you like red velvet cupcakes." She giggled, "you clearly didn't understand what my question was."
"I love red velvet cupcakes, actually." He started, only to frown, "just like how Haeun used to make them."
Seoyeon frowned, sighing on the inside as she looked back at her bowl filled with batter. Stirring the ingredients together, she couldn't help but feel her mood slowly be killed just because of Haeun. "Everything I do just always have to do with Haeun.."
"What?" He asked as she looked up at him, shaking her head.
"Nothing." She smiled sadly, turning back to her bowl to continue stirring.
~~~~
"Let me take a picture of these cupcakes." He insisted as he pulled out his camera to take some pictures of the finishing product of her special red velvet cupcakes.
She sighed, letting out a huge yawn as she shoved one into her mouth. He chuckled at how adorable she looked when she was sleepily eating. One eye was shut while the other was lazily open. She munched on her red velvet cupcakes, grabbing her glass of milk and chugging it down.
"I'm so tired." She mumbled softly and he went ahead and continued taking pictures of the cupcakes.
He placed the viewfinder towards his right eye, taking a close up picture of the cupcakes. Taking a few more pictures, he grabbed one of the cupcakes and started to eat. He found himself moaning at how delicious they tasted.
"You know these cupcakes actually taste so delicious-" He stopped and looked at the girl who was fast asleep.
Her arm protected her cheek from getting uncomfortable from the feeling of the wooden table. Her other hand was wrapped around her glass of milk. There was a bit of icing on the tip of her nose.
He grabbed his camera and walked over towards her, he brought the camera up to his eye and took a picture. Taking a look at the picture, he found himself smiling again.
"Why do you always make me smile?" He whispered, turning off his camera.
He ran upstairs and searched for a soft blanket to wrap around her. Coming back downstairs, he wrapped his iron man blanket around her and took her hand away from the glass of milk.
He leaned forehead and kissed her forehead, "sleep tight."
Little did he know that he was falling in love with her too.
He was just too blind.. and stupid.
Present Time
(Jungkook's POV)
I reached out and grabbed another photo from the clip. It was a picture of me, standing in front of the pier in the city of Seoul. I was looking straight ahead at the oceans, completely oblivient of Seoyeon who was taking a picture of me.
I chuckled to myself. She was really a cute one. How did I not realize that I fell in love with her? Was I that blind to think that I was still in love with Haeun?
I placed the picture back onto its clip, right beside Seoyeon's picture of her sleeping.
"I was I could go back in time and fix everything."
Past - A year ago... (11 months into the fake relationship)
(Seoyeon's POV)
I chased him down the streets of Seoul, his camera in hand. It was already the end of November, and it was already starting to snow. I managed to sneak into his house and wake him up as soon as I saw the first snowflake fall from the sky.
The two of us knew that we couldn't just waste the first day of Winter. We headed to Seoul and started to walk around the busy streets and take some pictures.
To add some fun into this day, I stole his camera and started to take different pictures of him whenever I could. Whether he liked it or not.
"You're going to take up all the space in the memory card!" He yelled as he ran away from me.
I giggled, holding onto the camera with my dear life and continued to run after him. He was like a cheetah, so fast that I couldn't keep up with his pace. "You can delete them right after! Just the ugly ones!"
"You're not good at taking pictures!" He exclaimed, a low chuckle escaping his lips.
We bumped into a few people on the sidewalk but we managed to stop in front of the pier. The waters weren't frozen just yet, since it was still the first day of Winter. But the breeze coming from the oceans were chilly and cold as ever.
I smiled, stopping a few metres before him. He breathed heavily, placing his arms onto the platform as he looked far off into the sea. I brought the camera up to my eye and quickly took a picture.
Bringing the camera down, our eyes met and I felt my heart stop. His stare was intense, and I couldn't help myself but look away just in time.
I cleared my throat, "uh.. take a look at the pictures I took."
I handed him his camera, avoiding eye contact. I felt his fingers under my chin as he forced me to look at him. I stared at him as he smiled beautifully. My knees started to go weak at how perfect he looked in my own eyes.
He let go of my chin and looked down at his camera, taking a look at my pictures. He nodded his head, looking amused and impressed. Looking up at me, he gave me a two thumbs up.
I felt his arms wrap around my waist, pulling me into a back hug. I closed my eyes, savoring the feeling of him so close to me. I was definitely going to miss this, especially him.
I was going to miss him when I let go of him.
And I started to frown. This didn't really feel as fake anymore. This fake relationship felt real to me, and that was starting to frighten me to death. Was this still all pretend?
"What's wrong?" He asked, and I looked at him, shaking me head.
"It's nothing, just thinking." I whispered, smiling. I placed my hands on top of his. "Mind sending me those pictures I took of you?"
He nodded his head in reply.
I smiled, shrugging off the thoughts that were troubling me. Maybe enjoying the moment was something that I should care more about. I shut my eyes, hearing the echoes of Bora's voice in my mind.
"You have one option of continuing this fake relationship without telling him that you're in love with him, or another option of stopping this fake relationship by telling him that you're in love with him."
"If I were you, I would pick your poison as soon as possible, before things get worse, before you fall deeper in love with him. I'm just trying to prevent you from getting hurt."
I opened my eyes, sucking in a huge pocket of air. Maybe falling in love did mean that you would get hurt in the end. But I was no expert in love, no matter how much Jungkook told me that.
I'm falling deeper in love with Jungkook, and I was bound to get hurt.
Present Time
(Seoyeon's POV)
"So.. were you guys together?" Chanwoo asked and I looked up at him.
I shook my head, shutting my eyes. "I was never in a relationship with him."
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, folding his arms as he sat down beside me. I placed my head on his shoulder, feeling the tears form in the brim of my eyes.
"But why do you look so hurt after seeing him?" He questioned me and I sighed.
"We were in a fake relationship," I whispered. "I did it to help him get his ex back, but I guess fate had it's own plans."
"You fell in love with him?" I nodded my head and he sighed, fiddling with his fingers.
I placed my head back onto the walls of the kitchen. I let out a huge sigh of frustration as he stood back up into his feet. He took out a cupcake from one of the ovens and handed it towards me.
"Take it, you need it." He insisted as I took it and frustratingly shoved it into my mouth.
I smiled and chewed on the cupcake, "thank you."
He continued back with his work and I stood back onto my feet. I looked ahead to see Chanwoo standing a few metres away from me. "No wonder you never fell in love with me."
My eyes widened and I stopped in my tracks. I looked at Chanwoo who still had his back facing towards me, and I felt myself weaken at how he looked.
He looked just like me when I got my heart broken by Jungkook.
I bit my lip as he turned around. I pursed my lips into a line as I looked at his pained expression.
He really did look just like me. I guess this is how I looked when I got my heart broken.. by Jungkook. But did Jungkook feel the same way I felt right now when he broke me?
"I-I'm so sorry, Chanwoo." I whispered, covering my mouth with my hands. "I'm sorry."
Past - A year ago... (Last month in fake relationship)
(Narrator's POV)
They were sitting in front of the pier on a cold winter night, watching the frozen waters. It was a beautiful sight, especially seeing the stars twinkle underneath the moonlight. The lights emitting from the buildings gave it an extra visual to the perfect scenery.
It was the night of Christmas Eve and everywhere you could find tons of people rushing from store to store to get last minute presents. Some people were meeting the love of their life and spending the Christmas Eve at the pier. Some people were a hopeless romantic, walking down the city of Seoul all alone.
And there was Seoyeon and Jungkook, sitting by the pier, surrounded by couples-real ones-as they gazed up at the stars. They came to a decision of spending their Christmas together, mainly because the two of them didn't have anyone else to spend it with.
"If you had one wish that could come true before tomorrow morning, what would it be?" Seoyeon asked out of nowhere, looking up at the stars and towards Jungkook.
He shrugged his shoulders, "I would wish for Haeun to be mine again, pretty simple."
Her smile faltered, and she turned away from him. It was her that he talked about yet again, and Seoyeon didn't know how she felt about it. Was she jealous or did she just hate the fact that Jungkook didn't pay any attention to her?
"You?" She looked at him as he asked her what she would wish for.
"I would wish that things just never ended." She smiled, searching through his eyes to see if he understood what she was trying to get at.
"But then again, I would probably wish the same thing too." He whispered, finding himself looking down at her lips. "I would probably wish that things would be different this time."
She was troubled with her own thoughts as he started to lean in towards her. She saw him look at her lips, and he licked his as he continued to close the gap between their faces.
Was he in love with her too? Or was she just falling for his games?
He leaned in and just as there lips were about to touch, he looked into her eyes. She was confused as heck, trying to search for an answer. He didn't know what led him to crave for her lips, but he knew that he wouldn't regret kissing her lips.. whether it was the last time or not.
He leaned in closer again, shrugging off his thoughts of Haeun for once. She shut her eyes, ready to feel the touch of his lips brushing against hers.
Suddenly, a soft giggle escaped from a few metres away. It was a familiar giggle, and Jungkook immediately pulled away from Seoyeon at an instinct.
His eyes searched hard for the person and it stopped upon Haeun who was walking down the dock of the pier, her phone pressed against her ear. Seoyeon followed his gaze and looked to see Haeun smiling as she walked.
"Haeun..."
Like a magnet, Seoyeon watched Jungkook hopelessly start to follow her like a lost puppy. Jungkook felt his heart soar just by looking at Haeun, and he felt like this was his moment. This was his moment to go run after her and ask for another chance.
Seoyeon stared at him as he ran away from her, and she couldn't help but feel the jealousy fill her broken-heart. She couldn't help but follow him to.
Jungkook didn't care about what he was listening to, whether it was his mind or his heart. He didn't know which of the two was speaking to him. Neither did Seoyeon.
But what Seoyeon knew was that tonight was the night where she was going to get her heart broken by the one whom she had fallen for.
She chased after Jungkook who was catching up to Haeun. Jungkook stopped in front of Haeun and called out her name, making her turn around to face him. Seoyeon stopped and slowly walked over to them, hearing their conversation.
"Haeun.." He began as she tilted her head in confusion.
"Jungkook? What are you doing here?" She asked, hanging up on the person who was on the other line.
"I'm here to take you back." He started and Haeun furrowed her eyebrows, biting her lip to contain the laugh that was bubbling up inside of her. "Please, take me back. I still love you."
"You're really stupid, aren't you, Jungkook?" She questioned him as Jungkook stared at her with a pained expression. She chuckled as another man came towards her and wrapped his arm around her to pull her closer to him.
Seoyeon looked at Jungkook's back, which was beginning to slump. Haeun continued to chuckle, shaking her head. "Jungkook, I don't love you anymore, when will you ever understand that?"
In a matter of seconds, the couple turned around and started to walk away from him. Jungkook stood there, hopeless. He turned around and stumbled back to see Seoyeon right behind him, crying.
She shook her head in disappointment, turning around to run away from him.
And on the night of Christmas Eve, Jungkook was all alone. Heartbroken.
~~~~
It was a few days after Christmas Day and Seoyeon found herself back at the pier to ease off her thoughts. She was feeling better than a few nights before where she last saw Jungkook.
She knew that she probably left him there confused, and that she needed to owe him an explanation. Out of nowhere, her foot took her all the way to the pier in hopes of finding Jungkook.
And she did.
She walked slowly towards the figure who was sitting near the dock, dangling his feet on top of the frozen ocean. She stopped, hesitating to go near him.
"You have to tell him, Seoyeon." Bora held her close to her, hushing her from her cries. "It's the only way for your heart to be set free."
"I can't tell him that I'm in love with him, Bora." Seoyeon sobbed. "I know I'm just going to be heartbroken, and I fear that I won't be able to be with him anymore."
"If having to love someone means that you're going to get hurt in the end, I would do it." Bora suggested. "If fate has it's own plans, then the two of you will meet each other again."
"I don't want to let him go, just yet." She whispered and Bora nodded her head.
"I know you do," Bora smiled sadly, "but this is the only way to prevent yourself from getting hurt even more."
She approached Jungkook, tapping his shoulder. He looked up at her and she was surprised to see that he wasn't hurt as much. His eyes were slightly red, but he looked like he was taking the heartbreak fine.
"Can we talk?" She asked as he nodded his head, patting a seat right next to him.
"What did you want to talk about?" He questioned her, not looking at her eyes.
She sighed, "I want to talk about us."
"Us?" She nodded her head as the boy closed his eyes. "Go for it."
"I don't think I can do this anymore." She mumbled as his eyes opened.
He chuckled bitterly, "it sounds like you're breaking up with me. We were never in a relationship, Seoyeon."
She stayed put in keeping calm, "that's the thing. We were never in a relationship."
"Your point?" He spat. "Just get to the point that you're going to leave me, just like everyone else."
She sighed frustratingly. "You know, sometimes I regret being in this fake relationship with you. Why? Because every single time I've spent time with you, I was beginning to get used to the fact that you're always in my presence. I was getting used to this whole thing that I was slowly forgetting the fact that this is all fake."
"I don't understand what's going on." He mumbled, looking at her in the eye.
"I was slowly forgetting the fact that this isn't a real relationship. All this time, I was getting used to seeing you. I forgot the fact that every kiss, every hug.. was fake." She chuckled bitterly, wincing as she felt the tears start to form. "I got so used to it that I-"
"Fell in love with me." He cut her to the chase and she looked at him, a tear escaping her eye. "You fell in love with me."
She gasped for air and nodded her head in reply. He stared at her as she wiped the tears that were streaming down her cheeks. "You fell in love with me?"
"Yes, Jungkook." She repeated her reply again.
"I-I don't think I-Seoyeon, I'm sorry." He whispered, shaking his head as Seoyeon felt her heart shatter into pieces. "I'm so sorry, Seoyeon. I.. I'm not in love with you."
Seoyeon smiled sadly, nodding her head. "I know, I knew you would say that."
"Seoyeon, I never intended on hurting you in any way." He began, placing his hand over hers. "In fact, you made me realize how I should love myself before loving others.. and thank you for showing me that."
She nodded her head, "and this is what I want you to do. Don't think about me, I want you to go chase after Haeun because I know that you have a second chance. I can feel it."
"But what about you-"
"Don't think about me. Go run after her, and if she doesn't give you a second chance.. then we have concluded how much of a selfish bitch she is." The two of them chuckled, "and you've also concluded the fact that there's more fish in the sea. She's not the only girl in the world, you know. There's still more room in your heart for someone who'll love you ten times more than she did."
He smiled, "thank you, Seoyeon."
Seoyeon leaned in and pressed her lips against his cheek, pecking it gently.
"I love you, goodbye."
