CHAPTER EIGHT: ALEX AT 14

December 18, 2001

    It’s now evening, and Sophie, Ashley, Edward, and Mariana got together to plan Alex’s birthday party.

    “Before we do anything, we should get Charlie and Hannah to a restaurant far from here,” said Sophie

    Mariana commented, “Hannah is having a change of heart, but she’s a tad bitchy. So we should send her and Charlie somewhere else.”

    “Okay, so I think we got that down. Next, what should we give Alex?”

    Ashley replied, “The problem is that none of us know who he is. So how do we know he’ll like the gifts we give?”

    Edward suggested, “I think we should give him stuff based on what we see. We always see him writing or drawing something in his notebook. I can buy him a new notebook and pen.”

    Mariana also suggested, “We’ve seen him put many different condiments on every food he eats. I think I’ll buy him random condiments.”

    “Ugh. Even though I respect Alex, I still can’t see how he can take all those condiments,” said Ashley. “Erm, I don’t know what to get him.”

    Then Sophie came up with an idea, so she grabbed Ashley.

    It’s a few days later, and Alex’s birthday had arrived. Charlie and Hannah were sent to a restaurant far from the No Rules house. Mariana and Edward got a cake, and bought the presents for Alex.

    Sophie entered Alex’s room. She didn’t see him, so she went to his closet. She found him sitting on the floor, writing in his notebook. She then gave him a note. Alex read the note.

    He then looked up, and asked her quietly, “What’s this for?”

    Sophie replied, “Just come down stairs, and you’ll see. I’m sure you’ll smile.”

  Alex gave a small smile, and followed Sophie downstairs. Then everyone shouted ‘happy birthday’ to Alex. He was shocked.

    Alex asked nervously, “W-Why would you lot do this for me?”

  Sophie replied, “Alex, we want to show that you’re appreciated and you’re needed in No Rules. You shouldn’t be alone; you should have friends who would be there for you.”

  Sophie held out her hand for Alex and he grabbed her hand. Then they, along with Edward, Ashley, and Mariana, ate cake. Alex opened his presents, and he liked what he got. They saw him grinning, which they’ve never seen before.

    Sophie told Alex “Alex, I got one surprise for you outside.”

    “And I helped,” Ashley chimed in.

    Alex smile as he asked, “What is it?”

    Sophie replied, “Just come with me.”

  So Alex followed Sophie to the backyard of the house. He saw a table with two chairs, and two meals on the table. He asked her, “Is this a date?”

    “Yeah, it is,” Sophie replied.

    Alex then stopped smiling. He stuttered, “W-Why d-do you f-fancy me? I‘m n-not some j-jock. I-I‘m just a f-freak.”

    Sophie told him “Alex, don’t call yourself a freak. You’re the most adorable bloke I’ve ever seen. Your face is dreamy, your smile is perfect, and your voice is perfectly dreamy. Besides, this is my way of saying that I love you.”

    Alex was shocked when he heard that. He asked, “But why me?”

    Sophie responded, “You know I told everyone that I was in the popular crowd in my school, yeah?”

    “Yeah.”

  “When I was in the crowd, I dated only the footballers. Those bloke were fit, but I found guys like you more attractive. They were mysterious yet misunderstood. I actually fancied one of them. Then a few days before I joined No Rules, the guy committed suicide. I cried all day. I found out he fancied me, but he knew he couldn’t date me. When I joined the band, I thought I could start fresh since no one knew me. Then you joined No Rules. I decided to make things right by being friends with you. But the more I see you and defend you, the more my feelings for you grew. Alex, I love you, and I want us to be more than friends.”

    Alex didn’t know what to say or feel. Sophie took it as a ‘no’, and sadly started walking away. Alex stopped her by calling her name. She stopped, and asked, “What?”

    Alex asked, “Can I have a hug?”

  So Sophie hugged Alex. He then told her, “I want us to be more than friends. I want to be your boyfriend.”

    Sophie smiled, then she and Alex sat down together for their first date.
