Under the Weather

Just when I thought my ailing condition couldn't get much worse, it did. For the past two hours or so, I had been in the bathroom floor, leaning over the toilet while Adalyn kept my hair out of my face as I emptied my stomach of bile and other bodily fluids.
When I woke up this morning I felt absolutely fine. After my dad and Ironhide left to go back to the base, my well-being had changed rather drastically. My temperature had risen from a low grade fever of 99.7 to an extremely high grade of 102.5. My body ached horribly and throwing up just made the situation a lot worse than it needed to be. Not to mention that my throat burned much worse than it did before and I could no longer speak at all. Plus, I was exhausted, but vomiting every five minutes didn't particularly allow me to attend to that need.
Before any real symptoms had shown up though, my mom had left for work and I was left alone with Adalyn to take care of me. It was a good thing that my roommate was a doctor-in-training or I didn't know what I would've done. I didn't want to worry my dad, mom, or even Ironhide for that matter and bothering Ratchet at the base wasn't an option; Adalyn was already here and was more than happy to be able to take care of me. She claimed that it not only allowed her to help her best friend while she was sick, but that it also gave her an incredible learning experience.
I was getting very tired of sitting on the bathroom floor though. My bottom was getting uncomfortably numb but I was far too weak to lift myself up and Adalyn wasn't really strong enough to support my weight. Had the bathroom had a television, I wouldn't mind being in here at all. Adalyn had been generous enough to plug her iPod into her iHome and bring it into the bathroom for me so at the moment I was listening to the melodic sound of Jason Aldean's voice.
I jumped up as the bile pushed itself up my esophagus and out of my mouth, interrupting my thoughts. I leaned over the toilet just in time for the fluid to make its escape. I flushed the toilet and took a deep breath, wiping my mouth once the horrid fluid exited my system. Soon enough I started to feel a warm liquid dripping on my arm. I looked down and my eyes widened slightly when I noticed the small drops of blood on my arm. When I reached my hand up to my face, I stopped at my nose. Blood was coming out of my nose in a steady stream and I groaned.
The bathroom door burst open and Adalyn appeared, her movement halting once she saw the blood on my face. She walked over quickly and grabbed some toilet paper before walking over to me. She held it to my nose and slightly tilted my head forwards. I sighed in relief as I felt the blood flow beginning to cease. Adalyn wiped my face and stood up, tossing the bloody paper into the trash bin.
I blinked and laid my head down on the toilet seat. It wasn't sanitary at all but I didn't care. I was too weak to get up and I needed to go to sleep.
A door downstairs could be heard slamming shut, followed by a couple pairs of footsteps and my name being called. Without thinking anything of it, I closed my eyes. Adalyn shook me every few seconds but I ignored her. The footsteps got louder which caused my headache to become worse. My face contorted in pain as my head throbbed but my eyes stayed closed.
I heard a small sigh followed by Adalyn's voice.
"Please open your eyes, Lea."
Her voice sounded almost as if it were in front of me; I assumed her to be kneeling down in front of me. I ignored her yet again though.
The loud footsteps finally stopped and I nearly smiled in relief.
"Before you ask, she has the flu. She's been like this since after the two of you left. Her symptoms are only getting worse," Adalyn spoke.
I assumed she was talking to Ironhide and my dad, but I had been more focused on the fact that she informed them of me having the flu. I mentally groaned, regretting that I didn't take the shot when I was offered. I solely blamed my intense fear of needles.
"She looks dead," my dad said.
Adalyn sighed. "She does, but I can assure you she's not."
That familiar wrench in my stomach caused my eyes to shoot open. Adalyn pulled my hair away from my face as I emptied my barely full stomach yet again. I sighed and propped my elbows up onto the seat, putting my aching head in my hands. I could hear a rattle and I looked over to see my dad trying to get in the bathroom. Adalyn quickly stopped him though.
"No. You're not allowed in here," she said as she pushed on his chest.
My dad made a face. "Why not?"
"She's gross and contagious. I don't believe it's smart for you to be around her," Adalyn said.
"What are you? A doctor?" my dad mused.
"Give me about seven more years and I guess you'll find out," she sassed back.
Ironhide snickered.
"Can you just go out and get me some Vicks NyQuil Cold and Flu, please? I wanted to go out earlier and get her some but I was afraid to leave her alone," Adalyn asked my now flustered father.
Ironhide took a step inside the bathroom and my dad scowled. "How come you're not stopping him?"
I shook my head in amusement and Ironhide knelt down behind me, placing a comforting hand on my back.
"He's not human which means he is immune to human sickness. Please just go and get my medicine, Will."
He sighed. "Where are her car keys?" he grumbled.
"They should be hanging on the key rack. I'll see you in a few," she chirped.
My dad just rolled his eyes and walked away. Suddenly the pressure in my nose returned and I quickly covered it with my hand. The warm, crimson colored liquid didn't take long to stain my hand and I whimpered, motioning to Adalyn my current situation. She cursed under her breath and grabbed the toilet paper off the counter. She ripped off a piece and held it to my nose. I grimaced at my bloody hands.
"She's burning up," Ironhide spoke.
"Yeah. It was a hundred and two earlier and I'm almost certain that it's rising which isn't a good thing," Adalyn told him.
I whined as the blood continued running out of my nose. Adalyn had to retrieve a new sheet because of the pace it was coming out at.
"I may not be very intelligent in the field of human sicknesses but I am almost positive that nosebleeds are not a symptom of the influenza."
Adalyn was very concentrated on trying to stop the bleeding.
"It may have to do with the fact that the air outside is so dry and it's causing the air in the house to become dry as well. Her capillaries have broken which is causing her to have nosebleeds. It isn't anything major though. Her sickness just makes the situation far more complex than it should be," she explained to him.
"Why didn't you call us?" Hide inquired.
"I wanted to but she insisted I not worry you."
"Lea," he chided. I shot him a questioning look.
"By the way, she can't speak at all. She's got full blown laryngitis," Adalyn told him.
I frowned but they couldn't very well see it considering my face was covered in bloody tissues.
"Hm, three earth months without hearing her voice and when I finally get to hear it again, she loses it. Sounds like Azalea to me," Hide teased.
I rolled my eyes and leaned into him, the tissues still pressed into my face. The bleeding was beginning to stop, so I removed the tissues from my face and tossed them, their destination unknown to me. Adalyn grimaced at me but an amused expression was hidden in her eyes.
"How do you feel?" she asked me.
And exactly how did she expect me to answer that?
"I feel like shit," I mouthed. She laughed and stood up.
"And to think I was going to take you to the base tomorrow to see the Autobots," Hide baited. I frowned.
"Do you feel well enough to head to your room?" Adalyn asked.
I thought for a moment, focusing on the strange easiness in my stomach. I gave her a shakey nod.
"Can you walk?"
Now, that question I knew the answer to. I may not have been throwing up anymore, but throwing up had left me incredibly weak; it had rid my aching body of all its nutrients and energy, also leaving me too weak to even attempt to do anything. I had been all day without food and I was exhausted. It also surprised me that I could even hold my head up right now.
I shook my head at her and she frowned. Before I knew it, I was being lifted up. Ironhide held me closely to his body and stood up from the floor. Adalyn smiled at us and I held on tightly to his shoulders. Hide walked out of the massive bathroom and down the hall to my bedroom while Adalyn followed closely behind us.
Hide gently placed me down on my bed. I smiled happily at the feeling of the soft cushion and grabbed my pillow, hugging it tightly to my body. Hide pulled the comforter up over my body, the warmth encasing me immediately.
Before long my dad came running through the door, a bottle of medicine in his hands as well as a pack of donuts. I rolled my eyes at him. He handed the box of medicine to Adalyn and she opened it almost immediately. I grimaced at the liquid being poured into the small plastic cup and backed away from Adalyn's direction only for a strong hand to stop me from moving further. Adalyn walked over to me and handed me the cup. I took it reluctantly and held it out in front of me.
"You have to drink it," she told me. I shook my head and heard Hide sigh.
"Azalea. Quit being stubborn. Do you want to get better?" he chided.
I studied the disgusting liquid again and shook my head. Adalyn threw her hands down on the bed.
"Drink it or so help me God I will shove the entire cup down your scratchy little esophagus," she warned.
I raised a brow at her threat but quickly downed the medicine. I grimaced and let out a disgusted cough as it settled into my stomach.
"That was horrible," I mouthed as I threw the little cup to the floor.
Not being able to speak was angering me. At least now I knew how Bumblebee felt most of the time. He and I would just have to take a sign language class together. It might would be fun. I felt like I was going to be stuck like this forever so learning sign language was an incredible option and who better to learn it with than my best friend's mute Autobot companion.
"I hope you know we can't hear you," my dad teased.
I just flipped him off while he laughed and exited the room. Getting Hide's attention, I gestured for him to grab my notebook and pen off my desk. He did so and handed them to me. I opened it and scribbled onto the paper.
'Can you ask Bee if he would like to take a sign language class with me? I think we both could use it,' I jotted down.
I showed it to Ironhide and he laughed. "I'll see what I can do."
I yawned and tossed the notebook to the floor before wrapping myself in my comforter.
"Is someone sleepy?" Adalyn cooed. I smiled at her and nodded.
"Well, I'll let you get to sleep. If you need me, I'll be in my room," she chirped and skipped out of the large bedroom.
I turned over to look at Hide. He smiled at me before laying down beside me. I scooted closer to him and he wrapped a protective arm around me.
"Humans are such a strange species. I don't know how you manage to endure such sickness. I haven't seen you this bad since you got food poisoning your junior year of high school," he laughed.
I shrugged. "Fuck this," I tried to say.
He heard me though and chuckled. I yawned again. "Go to sleep, Azalea. You look exhausted, sweetspark."
I smiled and closed my eyes, pushing myself closer to him while he rubbed comforting circles into my back.
"I love you," I breathed out, the sound not even audible.
He still managed to make out my words though.
"I love you, Azalea."
I just snuggled into his side. My body still ached and there was still that pit in my stomach but the medicine I had taken was beginning to help me quite a lot. Being sick was one of the worst things in the world and I only hoped I wouldn't have to endure this the entirety of my break.
